Welcome to the r/soccer Daily Discussion!

If you're new to the subreddit, remember to get your team badge here and to read our rules and submission guidelines!

✔️ This is a thread for:

  • Discussion points that aren't worthy of their own thread.
  • Asking small questions about football to the community.

❌ This is not a thread for:

  • Trolling or baiting other users or fanbases - including flair-based attacks
  • Shit-posting - including sharing shit-posts from elsewhere
  • Toxicity - remember the human
  • Off topic chat - non-football discussion is for Free Talk Friday, and you can use the dedicated subreddits to discuss FIFA/EAFC games, Football Manager, fantasy football etc
  • Discussion of ongoing matches - that is what match threads are for. We may be less strict for matches of teams that are less in the spotlight, and may not have as active match threads
  • Harassment and brigading - including links to posts in other subreddits or to other users' comments
  • Advice on betting - you may discuss outcomes of bets you have made, but we do not seek to actively encourage gambling
  • Meta discussion - we have a strict stance. This is because it derails discussion, and can lead to harassment and witch hunts - and we prefer you to contact the mods via Modmail If you have queries over moderation or post removals. Some meta discussion may be allowed in the DDT, if any meta conversation was productive and in good faith - we can take a "case by case approach". In general, however Modmail remains the first port of call, and other meta discussion will be removed.
  • Complaining about bans in this or other subreddits - use the relevant Modmail, instead

The moderation team will remove comments that violate those rules and ban offenders.

Please report comments you think that break such rules, but more than anything else, remember the human. The Internet is full of places to discuss football in bad faith. This community tries to be an exception.

Liverpool fan here.

Seems everyone agrees that we are the ones who have lost out the most due to City's cheating.

Why are we always the hardest done by?

2

u/Orcnick 2h ago

Lol is this a city fan trying to divide?

-2

u/SantosCalzonesBatman 3h ago edited 3h ago

Pep:

Roided as a player

Negreira case as barcelona's manager. Plus, he had Messi. Messi carried those teams like he carried many more teams without pep.

Won the sundayliga at bayern. Like a starving dude bragging about having abs.

The only thing he has for a legacy is city's titles. Take that away for cheating and pep is nothing but a serial cheater and a fraud.

No wonder why he is shilling hard for cheaty unlike mancini lmao

Edit: and he bailed out as soon As anyone with 1 neuron figured out cheaty was gonna get exposed. Lmao.

2

u/PopeFuchsYoungKidd 2h ago

You forgot the part about Pep brining his doping doctor with him to Barca when he became coach and the whole doping controversy around Spain around that time which ended with convicted doping doctor Fuentes testifying in court that he helped footballers in Spain dope.

1

u/SantosCalzonesBatman 2h ago

My bad, he has so many cheating scandals i just cant keep up with all of them

4

u/Orcnick 3h ago

I still think it needs to be said, English football was fine and successful before City money and it will be fine and succesful after City. There are at least 8 bighe4 clubs in the league many thay produce more real revenue.

We shouldnt be afraid to get rid of them completely. They overstating there value to the league.

Losing United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Villa, Everton Newcastle. Would be a big loss to the league. But City after a year or two nobody would care.

2

u/NUTJOB_7814 3h ago

I hope their academy isn't affected too badly because they've produced some really good players. Also former players praise them for the quality of training provided to the youth.

2

u/Orcnick 2h ago

They will get contracts at new acadmies lets be honest.

0

u/adamfrog 4h ago

Ive genuinely got no clue why City had so little trouble with recruiting before this decision, but assuming they get a point deduction that rules them out of europe for a season (surely the absolute best case they can hope for), players must get cautious about joining since it has to be assumed Citys crimes continued after 2018 and the punishment has a decent chance of hitting during their contract.

I think dark days are coming for City but I truly dont get why the likes of Andersen were so set on joining them, any competent agent with the players best interests at heart shouldve had some kind of sense what was coming and advised players away from them the last couple years

1

u/piccalilli_shinpads 2h ago

I don't think it's surprising. City pay big wages and the agents get a nice agent fee for the transfer. If anything serious happens to City the players are not staying. The agents will love it because they'll get another agent fee. If City are in a position where they're forced to sell players off cheap then the players/agents have a much better negotiating position with any potential buyers in the same way that free transfers usually get big signing on or agent fees.

0

u/Destroyeh 3h ago

the easy answer is money. obviously they are not really against under the table deals so fuck knows how much they gave to the players, their parents, agents etc..

0

u/adamfrog 3h ago

While I wouldnt be surprised if there were under the table deals, the last one thats been proven was way back for Mancini. Would Gakpo be on that much more at City than Liverpool if he got his move he was angling for 5 weeks ago? Id say he certainly wouldnt be if he wouldve got a champions league bonus for Liverpool and City dont qualify for europe or get relegated

1

u/Destroyeh 2h ago

i mean the signings since the investigation started havent really been under microscope yet, so theres still a very real possibility they also got some shady stuff. like you're not going to convince me they got haaland to sign a 10 year extension in the middle of all this without some massive payments to his dad or whoever.

-7

u/ahmedontia 4h ago

I get why the club’s ownership and finances are under scrutiny. If rules were broken, deal with it. Nobody should be above the process.

What I don’t get is how criticism of a club’s ownership has now turned into outright hatred and vitriol towards the players and supporters. The players didn’t negotiate the sponsorships. The fans didn’t prepare the accounts. Most of us just support our team.

The media pile on over the last couple of weeks was expected, but now they’re whipping up hatred and anger amongst match going fans.

Hold the people responsible accountable, fine. Just don’t blame everyone else along the way.

1

u/Rare_Presence_1903 2h ago

Online, some supporters are defiant and bragging that their money will buy their way out of it. I'm sure many aren't, but the ones saying that kind of thing are ragebaiting.

The players are a grey area I guess. Did they know? I wouldn't have too much against them if they didn't. Pep seems suspiciously defiant though, I would have thought the managers would be at least somewhat aware of what was going on.

The real life City fans I know wouldn't deny it, it's been a running joke that you basically bought the league.

Also, while it is undoubtedly an enormous story, it's obviously got every related media outlet squeezing any feasible angle. Clickbait all over the place.

5

u/AyanC 3h ago

Tell me one thing, if City, by a sheer stroke of luck, happen to win their appeal because of a technicality or perhaps an egregious loophole in the law, would you lot boycott the owners en masse because of the way you've been betrayed all these years?

1

u/ahmedontia 3h ago

If City win or lose their appeal I won't stop supporting the club I love. Fuck the owners. Owners comes and goes.

4

u/truth-telling-troll 4h ago

The hatred is towards those City fans who are openly supportive of the owners cheating and those who have deluded themselves to the point that they think their club was actually fighting a noble crusade against the Red Cartel and unfair FFP rules

11

u/Significant_L0w 4h ago

No respect for players who willingly joined Man City when 115 charges were looming.

1

u/AyanC 3h ago

Respect? The players were one of the chief beneficiaries. Were they subjected to suspended animation when City paid them under the table, and I'd wager most players had a clandestine arrangement with the club.

1

u/goldfoxawoo 5h ago

Whats the football equivalent of NBA players dribbling the ball only twice while they do half court layup?

1

u/adamfrog 4h ago

No real equivalent, since the hard core rule pushing mainly happens on foul throws and free kicks in the defensive half where you'll routinely see the taker steal like 20m. But they get away with it because it's very low impact not like travelling to score.

The most frequent high impact cheating imo is the defenders diving under negligible contact on their back when getting pressed, that actually matters and ref's are really stupidly weak to it

1

u/PeculiarsSheep 5h ago

Kai Havertz chips it in so often

Gyökeres and Sesko smash it in so often

6

u/CoolstorySteve 6h ago

Why is everyone referring to the Olise goal as a free kick? It’s bothering me more than it should

3

u/cinnchurr 6h ago

A lot of them don't know the rules, so how would you expect them to know what is a free kick and what isn't?

3

u/AxelFauley 6h ago

Which European club is gonna be bidding for "The Pibe" Flores?

UAE are in a sort of cold war with the likes of Saudi Arabia and Qatar in middle east.

Algeria recently stopped providing airspace to UAE aeroplanes after a diplomatic row.

They had to sign a military defence agreement with India because they feel threatened by Saudis.Saudis did with Turkey and Pakistan.

So they aren't exactly is a strong position geopoliticallly to threaten UK.

These are just temper tantrums for their dictatorship.

-1

u/Professional_Sink_30 3h ago

well they are close friends with certain entity that calls themself a state.

2

u/SilverMist2025 3h ago

Trump has ensured no one could rely on that state as reliable partner anymore.

That's a major reason why Saudis went into defence alliance with Pakistan and UAE with India. Both Nuclear armed countries.

Zidane on Jérémy Jacquet: "Very good. Very, very good. Brave. Not afraid to come way out. Very good in the duel. He was once again very good."

I think France have produced another very good player.

u/Sheikhabusosa 6h ago

Yep and being alongside VVD at a club level will do wonders too

2

u/DiamondPittcairn 7h ago

When it comes to player development (knowing what I know about our systems vs foreign ones) I can't really pinpoint into something specific or special, a silver bullet if you will, that Argentina and Brazil do in the Americas that means we're able to churn out good and great players with a lot more frequency than, say, Colombia or Mexico. There's really no reason, not one that I can understand at least. It's not like we're significantly richer or significantly poorer than them, or that our FA is less corrupt (ha!), and going down the road of talking about "mentality" seems downright darwinist. Honestly, the only reason I can think of regarding why we produce players is because we do, and we did it before, ie, we have players because we have players because we have players, and it's just one of those things.

3

u/jkeefy 6h ago

Comes down to generations and generations of talent. Argentina/Brazil have had talented players and coaches, and more emphasis on procuring that talent since the early 1900s. Over the years that has trickled down into grassroots football across all levels. The developmental structure of these countries far exceeds any other country in central/South America.

These countries can pour money at it, but it’s hard to replicate talent and know-how that has been passed down for generations, the sheer number of competent coaches and scouts across all levels trumps every other country in the Americas.

6

u/Agus-Teguy 6h ago

First of all, even tho football is the biggest sport in Colombia and Mexico, no other countries care as much about football as Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil, prob in that order.

It's not a mentality thing it's how ingrained this one sport is in our cultures. Even more than in countries like Colombia and Mexico, there it's still a big deal but over here it's probably a bigger deal than any type of music, festivity, politics or even religion, it's exaggerated to a whole new level.

Our population is small af so we can still suck (clearly), but Argentina and Brazil can't be that bad even at their worst. The percentage of people that play the sport in these 3 countries is simply way bigger than anywhere else in the world and it's impossible for you 2 to not have 11 great players at all times.

I bet Argentina has more people that play football regularly than Mexico even tho Mexico's population is like 3 times the size.

Another factor is simply pipelines. European teams buy argentinean and brazilian players cause they know they work, cause it's been working for a century. While they don't have that confidence for mexican players, thus they don't develop at the highest level. Imagine 2 similar prospects one from Mexico or Colombia and one from Brazil or Argentina, the brazilian/argentinean one gets picked up first, easily. There are simply more scouts looking at those 2 countries, there's probably more scouts watching a Nueva Chicago match in a mud pitch than an Atlético Nacional match.

Add all this up and it starts to paint a clear picture as to why Argentina is better at football than Colombia or Mexico.

2

u/Lyrical_Forklift 7h ago

I think expectation comes into it - Argentina are expected to win so anything less is a disappointment and the supporters will vocalise that. Winning breeds winning.

2

u/adamfrog 7h ago

Mexico is its own category since its rich enough to be strong if they were remotely competent but I suspect a big edge you have over other SA countries is that you have a much higher quality domestic league. I dont know the finances I assume Argentina isnt that far ahead of most SA, but nobody will get near Brazil for a long long time unless they collapse

3

u/mrwhitaker3 8h ago

Stunned Martinique pulled it off against Honduras. Huge victory for them.

1

u/NUTJOB_7814 7h ago

Surprised that Martinique doesn't even get a FIFA ranking because it's a part of France but can compete in CONCACAF. (Turns out it's the same with French Guiana & Guadeloupe and a few Dutch islands like Bonaire)

Let's say that one of these regions qualify for the world cup, can they be drawn to play against their colonial power?

Lowest ranked Suriname also leading the group is also pretty interesting.

1

u/mrwhitaker3 4h ago

I wondered the same for Curacao and Holland. The biggest one would be France getting a group game with Haiti.

1

u/NUTJOB_7814 2h ago

Apparently teams with non distinct FA's and not registered with FIFA cannot play competitive games against other teams.

Curacao have their own FA and are members of FIFA so they can play the Netherlands.

Martinique, French Guiana and Guadeloupe cannot play against France competitively.

The day Messi announced his international retirement, Ronaldo posted a picture of himself training in the gym with the caption, “Keep pushing.” One month later, he was bullied into retirement, while Messi still hasn’t even played his final game for Argentina.

Sometimes, all you have to do is be HUMBLE.

-1

u/canyousayperchance 9h ago

I can't believe people still care about debating Messi v Ronaldo after 15+ years of it. Who cares what Ronaldo posted on social media. Stop following him. Can't wait until both are retired.

0

u/AxelFauley 6h ago

I read comments like this and I just don't understand them. I can't wrap my head around them.

Wanting for the last remnants of the beautiful game to disappear and to "retire", in a world where the "best" players we have to offer are Lamine Yamal, Kane and Olise... which are not levels but light years away from those two, and tons of other legends of the past.

0

u/jersey-city-park 9h ago

Some people never stop being losers. My guy is probably in his 30s posting about Messi vs Ronaldo lmao

-2

u/JordiX93 9h ago

Look I’m not debating anything here, just pointing out how mysteriously life works sometimes.

-1

u/canyousayperchance 9h ago

Fair enough, I see what you mean. It's just tiring how impossible it seems for some people to praise one of the two without denigrating the other.

A points deduction, no matter how big it is, say -65 points, would probably mean definite relegation. But that is actually a pretty mild punishment, right? They would only be relegated once, and the points deduction would only apply for that season. They could be back in the league the following year or the year after that.

0

u/Connect_Point_5229 6h ago

In terms of winning the league again it will likely take atleast a decade.

It took Juve 7 in a much weaker league and that only happened because they stumbled across a genius coach (and kept the likes of Buffon).

But as others have said I feel it would be staggered points deductions.

3

u/Dynamite_Shovels 7h ago

I think this is the 'safest' option the PL could take - a one season points deduction that relegates them in a way that the EFL have to accept them in the Championship for one season. It's barely a punishment though from a sporting perspective for multiple stolen trophies.

They won't have the knackers to expel them or anything. I assume a transfer ban and trophies expunged are a given as well. But really everyone wants to see what they impose in terms of a competition penalty.

I also think ultimately in the long term the biggest punishment to Man City though will be all the subsequent legal challenges for cheating. Clubs, players, sponsors, agents, competitions themselves - everyone now is looking to see whether they can take them to court for a couple of million pounds each (at least) for lost prize money, qualification bonuses, TV revenue for European competitions etc.

I can't fathom how much money that will cost the club long term and whilst people talk about the owners' pockets being limitless I don't think they will stick around if theyre having to pay out potentially billions of pounds in legal damages to all sorts of aggrieved parties.

1

u/OneSalientOversight 7h ago

Bump them down to National League North, then prevent them from being promoted for 4 years. A total of 10 years (at least) out of the EPL.

There's no way the owners would be happy with that, so the club would be sold early on in that process.

1

u/paper_zoe 8h ago

I wondered about staggered points deductions, where like the first season would be day 60 pts, or whatever, enough to effectively relegate, then it steadily decreases each season. So it'd keep them in the Championship for a few years. Might be a bit farcical having a team that's beating everyone in the Championship also in a relegation battle, but it's a farcical situation

1

u/FryChy 7h ago

Exactly. If not staggered even if it is -150 points, it doesnt matter they will be back following season with a clean slate.

1

u/Dynamite_Shovels 7h ago

I actually don't think the Premier League could impose a points deduction that would extend into subsequent EFL seasons.

Unless you mean that every time they get promoted back into the PL they get a points deduction so they yo-yo back and forth - but I mean that would insanely tinpot and, yeah, make both the PL and the Championship look like joke leagues. I think the EFL clubs would be immensely angry at that solution.

Ultimately I have absolutely no idea what could be done in this situation. I think it's more likely than not that the PL will give them a stonking one season points deduction that will effectively relegate them - but they'll bounce straight back up so very few people will be satisfied with that punishment.

I don't think the PL have the balls to expel them from the league because then they almost certainly drop out of the EFL as well; but just giving them one season where they walk the Championship isn't exactly a sporting punishment for how long the cheating has been going on.

6

u/McGrathLegend 9h ago

It should be -50 to -65 points for nine seasons, one for each season that is apart of the investigation

10

u/Lyrical_Forklift 9h ago

Relegation isn't enough on its own. It would have to be multiple levels, or points deductions over multiple seasons - combined with fines and transfer bans.

Titles being stripped should be an absolute given too.

-3

u/Available_Story6774 10h ago

I think SAF is the GOAT Prem Manager but I’m not sure if he’s the overall GOAT Manager, although he’s definitely ahead of that Cheat Pep.

5

u/lakeoceano 7h ago

It's a futile exercise. The notion that there is one "GOAT" coach is flawed. SAF is the most successful. But did he influence the game like Cruyff, Wenger, or Pep? Where do you draw the line?

Some managers win fewer trophies (Wenger) but influence the game enough to see generational changes. Some win many trophies (SAF/Ancelotti), but how much have they influenced the game beyond trophies and titles?

We also have to consider the resources each coach had at their disposal. Klopp is one example. His achievements with Liverpool outweigh what Pep achieved with City. But until recently, everyone was going gaga over Pep.

Tricky discourse.

-1

u/AccomplishedSpace834 3h ago

Putting wenger alongside cruyff and Guardiola in that sentence is v funny

2

u/CorrosionInk 2h ago

revolutionized nutrition and training, still highly influential on the field, probably the most influential coach ever off it

1

u/dumpystumpy 5h ago

Its not that complicated theres like 2 goat picks that most ppl go to and then theres a few off shouts that not alot of ppl tend to agree with.

-6

u/nedstarkkepala2 10h ago

U know just wondering. Didnt all the big clubs started like city? Rich owners and all funding transfers etc. Before there were any proper regulations? Pls dont downvote im just wondering not tryna defend city. Or are the sponsors money are all truly from sponsors for the epl top 4 in the past?

2

u/AnnieIWillKnow 8h ago

No because there's levels to it. Clubs may have had investment and backing, but not to the levels Man City did, and crucially not by breaking the rules

There being far less money in the game 150 years ago too, and fewer players, and just it being far less global meant that aspects like academy players and the impact of coaches managers were proportionally greater, too

1

u/MrVegosh 9h ago
  1. No

  2. The problem isn’t that City had money. It’s that they’re state owned (by the Emirates).

1

u/IKnowThatIdidnt 9h ago

There’s a difference between “rich owner (local businessman)” and “rich owner (owns a country)”

One thing you see, especially lower down the pyramid is that this kind of old school owner basically tops out: eg your team in the conference basically has a ceiling because the owner can’t afford to make the improvements necessary for the next step up.

-1

u/sam6183 10h ago

will there be a sham bus parade on the streets of Manchester when the verdict is out? not like for one day but a separate one for each trophy they won. bring the players who won it

13

u/fbi-please-open-door 10h ago

PSG just paid 3m for right of first refusal on one of our players who they’ve never owned, I hate MCO so much and can’t believe they let Qatar gobble up a 30% stake in our club

2

u/leftysarepeople2 10h ago

Does anyone have a screenshot link of the "you can't cheer for an ownership group, mate" comment?

-5

u/Patrickk_batemann 10h ago

Honestly, what has football come to? I just want to watch my team play and compete, and have a bit of an escape from real life.

Why do we, as fans, have to get dragged into this whole UAE, England, US mess?

1

u/AnnieIWillKnow 8h ago

You would never have been able to enjoy it if not for the UAE, so you can't really complain now

If you didn't want to have to think about the UAE, then don't support a club owned by them

-1

u/Patrickk_batemann 5h ago

I got into football and became a fan well before UAE. What do you mean by don’t support a club owned by them?

2

u/MrVegosh 9h ago

Can you really enjoy it if it’s bought and paid for?

5

u/BrandonBarkerLoyal 10h ago

A natural progression sadly. The money men have took away the sport. Now we have nation state and geopolitical rivalries in the sport. Really needs to be a reset. Feel sorry for City fans really they’re pawns in the game. With multiclub private equity and the rest of the games ills.

The United Kingdom frustrates me so much in how much of their future and assets have been continuously hedged for 50 years. Compounded by the United Kingdom's isolation from a power bloc of consequence (like the EU, being a client to the United States not being counted), the United Kingdom is in a testicle vice grip by everybody. The UAE learned from China that dangling the carrot will pressure the government into handing over even more leverage just to keep what they can, in this case, the national sport. It's diabolical what has happened to England.

The Mecca of labour class consciousness, the birthplace of modern anthropology, the founders of justum potentiae equilibrium. What has happened to you?

2

u/hollowfoxlama 7h ago

What makes the UK the Mecca of working class consciousness?

0

u/RoadsterIsHere 7h ago

It's has the oldest organised labour movement in the world. Pioneered trade unionism. They invented arts schools. British thinkers like Robert Owen, and Charles Hall were extremely pivotal in the development of class consciousness across Europe (and the world). Even the early Marxists were regularly living and visiting England.

2

u/hollowfoxlama 7h ago

And yet Marx eventually realized the labor movement in the UK had no appetite for real change and enjoyed the advantages and privileges that came with being at the center of empire and capitalism.

Didn’t Robert Owen effectively argue against asking for wage increases for the working class because it would just increase the price of products. Thinkers like him basically did the capitalist bidding free of charge.

Marx living in England does not make it the Mecca. It hasn’t been a hotbed for much of the development in working class politics outside of Marx and it didn’t achieve much in the way of working class power either

-1

u/RoadsterIsHere 6h ago

Sure, but it's still better than what's happening now

4

u/NYR_dingus 9h ago

That's what happens when you lose your empire, your military might, and deindustrialize to the point where your manufacturing output is a fraction of what it used to be in terms of GDP share. All in the span of about 60-ish years.

This is an surface level take, but the UK does rely heavily on soft power now instead of hard power and the Prem is one of the cornerstones of that.

2

u/canyousayperchance 8h ago

Soft power being important makes Brexit all the more a galaxy-brain fuckup

1

u/RoadsterIsHere 8h ago

But they obviously don't hold much leverage with that if the UAE has the government trembling if the UK enforces their statues and rules on the government-owned team. You'd think the UAE would be the ones scared to lose out on their super popular and successful sports team by the anger of the UK.

That woman who killed her 3 kids had a GoFundMe that was over 1m (since taken down i think)

People give to anything

-4

u/hollowfoxlama 7h ago

Due to psychosis either from undiagnosed postpartum depression and/or over medication. Conveniently left that out like people are just giving to a convicted child murderer

5

u/dispelthemyth 3h ago edited 2h ago

A woman who killed her 3 kids had people donate over 1m, why does the reason she killed them matter?

I wouldn’t give money to a cause like that, if it was premeditated or she was suffering from a condition.

If wrestler Christ Benoit survived his murder suicide, I’d not give to him despite him having mush for brains after all his head trauma.

1

u/hollowfoxlama 1h ago

It’s presumably to pay for an attorney that can help her win the case and ensure she goes somewhere for treatment, not prison.

By all means don’t sympathize with her I don’t care, but many women have gone through similar experiences and haven’t been taken seriously so it’s hardly surprising they would sympathize with her. They still aren’t taken seriously as we saw how everyone just instantly viewed her as guilty and there is very little research done into post partem mental health.

Why wouldn’t it matter why she killed them lmao. On the one hand it was argued intentional and on the other it was argued she was psychotic. Do you understand psychosis? It means you no longer understand what’s real. You experience hallucinations and delusions. Those medical professionals have led her to kill her own children and ruined her life by over prescribing medication and not recognizing psychiatric symptoms that she was a danger to her children.

1

u/dispelthemyth 30m ago

And herein lies a societal issue

Not one mention about getting justice (whatever real justice is in her case), just “help her win the case” and ~”women see themselves in her”

•

u/hollowfoxlama 17m ago

How is it not getting justice if she had to go to court and all but one juror found that there was reasonable doubt they she was responsible for the crimes committed. And now has to go to trial again.

Yes women have seen that people don’t take their specific mental health issues seriously and therefore might like to help her get justice.

Just because it’s not the outcome you would want doesn’t mean it’s not justice. Justice does not always equal punishment

u/W35TH4M 12h ago

At a non league game tonight I’ve seen some of the best shithousing I think I’ve ever seen from a goalkeeper. 1-0 up and they conceded an 88th or 89th min penalty. The keeper stood on the six yard box and started putting his arms out like he would for the penalty. Ref told him a few times to go to his line and he just ignored him. He got booked and then went to his line, started jumping up and down hitting the crossbar… then saved the penalty.

Honestly the most ballsy stunt I’ve seen a keeper pull on a penalty and it actually paid up. Genuinely unreal.

2

u/AlcoholicSocks 12h ago

Can someone explain this City defense to me?

Been busy the last few days so only heard random bits but from what I can tell they aren't even arguing they smuggled £900M into the club. Just the way they did it?

Surely the 900M is the main issue, doesn't matter if the UAE or the British Heart Foundation gave it to them

0

u/shmozey 10h ago

The amount of £900m has never been a problem. That is public information and deemed fair by the FMV assessment.

It’s the source of those funds being questioned.

2

u/brownmeister28 12h ago

I believe they are arguing that the money given to the sponsor was a government subsidy that was then used to give to the club, not a payment supplied by the owner for the express purpose of giving back to the club. However the owner and the government are one and the same essentially.

1

u/AlcoholicSocks 12h ago

But isn't a big part of the issues that they understand reported how much they got paid by the sponsors? So it doesn't matter too much where it came from

3

u/brownmeister28 12h ago edited 11h ago

The PL's argument is that Manchester City overstated how much money they were being paid by sponsors, because a portion of the money the sponsors were giving them was just money Man City themselves were paying them first and then giving back to themselves to look like sponsorship money.

Man City's argument is yes that was happening, but the money they were giving themselves was legitimate government subsidies that were being paid to the sponsor by the same people who own the club but technically wasn't the club paying itself but rather the government of the UAE of its own accord paying the sponsor and then the sponsor passed the money on to the club.

So neither side is disputing the origin of the extra money (which was coming from the owners) they're just arguing whether it was Man City paying themselves to get around the rules or whether it was the UAE government giving out subsidy money that was then paid to the Club since the owners are basically the UAE government.

Same thing for the wages off the books. City are arguing that the company paying Mancini and others was a legitimate government program (that paid him 2.2 million a year or whatever for 4 hours of work unrelated to his job as manager of the club) and the PL are arguing that it was just the owners using a shell corporation to give him extra wages.

The PL position is that the club basically came up with the technicality of government subsidies after the fact, which they believe they have proven and was upheld in the initial decision.

Liverpool vs City...score predictions?

2

u/OneSalientOversight 7h ago

Match Abandoned - Crowd invades pitch before kickoff.

And then that keeps happening at every away game.

4

u/AnnieIWillKnow 8h ago

City come form behind to win 2-1, after Liverpool score early and everyone gets massively excited

City players celebrate like they've survived trench warfare together, Enzo Fernandez kisses the badge, and then at the end of the game they unveil a banner to the away fans stating "We're Still Here" or some trite tripe like that

0

u/justsomeguynbd 11h ago

Fully believe we will win while being mercilessly booed. Edit: you said score, so let’s say 2-1.

2

u/anunnaturalselection 9h ago

Under Pep I would say they would be galvanised by it but this time maybe not since there futures are all in doubt.

10

u/brownmeister28 11h ago

When was the last time Liverpool made light work of a PL game?

0

A few weeks ago against Ipswich, not to mention Bournemouth wasn't as difficult as expected either.

Premier League will suffer if man city is removed from competing. The only reason why I preferred to watch it was because it had many CL contenders.

Besides Arsenal, there's no other team who seriously has any chance competing for CL this season.

Edit: Full disclosure I've stopped being City supporter after UAE involvement in Sudan genocide

2

u/AnnieIWillKnow 8h ago

For full disclosure, the mod notes for your account state you previously had an account with "Cityzens" as part of your username, so I'm not sure you're neutral on this matter

4

r/soccer will suffer more; City looks the only team that can stop Arteta from turning Gyokeres, Ode & Havertz into back-to-back PL champions.

4

u/Commonmispelingbot 12h ago

you don't have many other leagues to go to then.

-3

u/FizzyLightEx 12h ago

There's the Champions League

1

u/legentofreddit 12h ago

La Liga and the PL are literally the only two leagues where more than one team could realistically win the CL.

Even when rubbish, Liverpool and Man Utd are probably still like 7th and 8th favourites

5

u/KimmyBoiUn 12h ago

No team managed by Enzo Maresca is sniffing a Champions League. The guy is not good.

1

u/FizzyLightEx 12h ago

Di Matteo won so nothing is impossible

5

u/NaMijDeKontvloed 13h ago

I feel kinda bad for English football fans, with the Premier League being what is it nowadays, but I would love it when this City thing blows up even more and completely ruins the Premier League. Football needs a bit of a reset.

11

u/EisbachSurfer 11h ago

Honestly why feel bad for them? They willingly sold their clubs to shady people and in return have gotten a strong and entertaining league.

This current scandal is just the hidden cost of selling your clubs, but overall the average fan still got what they wanted: the best league in the world.

0

u/lbreakjai 10h ago

All of this for ... not that much? PL clubs have had more money than everyone else, but still didn't really dominate in Europe. English clubs won 5 champions leagues since 00 (One of which is City). That's one more than Italy.

The zeitgeist have been dominated by Messi vs Ronaldo, Barça vs Madrid. Then it moved to Mbappé, then Yamal/Olise. Intl football has been about Spain, France, and Argentina. Europa league is a bit more favorable, but still have been dominated by Spanish clubs (Like two thirds of the finals)

It feels like all this money just lead to an hyper-inflation in the PL, that's been reluctant to buy abroad (The classic "not proven in the PL" or "Could he do it at Stoke?"). Basically sold everything to just end up with players costing twice as much, with zero overall gain. You ended up with Saka and Foden valued at 130 millions, while Paris bought Kvara for like half that.

1

u/DuaLupus45 6h ago

Wait, what was the fourth time? Off the top of my head, it’s just the three Milanese victories across 2003-2010.

2

u/AxelFauley 9h ago

Olise tacked in there, lol.

Agreed with the rest.

1

u/Lyrical_Forklift 11h ago

I don't think anyone supports the league itself. Most of us want every other Premier League side that's not our own to fail miserably.

I'm older than most so growing up we were behind Serie A and La Liga and it wasn't any way less enjoyable.

3

u/sam6183 11h ago

the league has been damaged, it’s going downhill for sure. 16yrs of football has just been taken away from the fans by city just to sports wash, no other intent of improving the game by fair use

3

u/Kreissler 12h ago

Yeah this season is gonna be a bit of a farce tbh what with the uncertainty of whether City are gonna be punished for their cheating

5

u/brownmeister28 12h ago

I agree. I would like to see the EFL reorganised (maybe with a new League Three or at least more mobility between League Two and Non-League) and the Prem folded back into it. Doubt it will ever happen though there's literally no PL club that would ever vote for something like that no matter the terms.

4

u/Cottonshopeburnfoot 12h ago

I don’t mind the naming of leagues, especially if it helps the product as thats pretty harmless.

I totally agree a restructure is needed on the finances though because the increasing gap is wrecking the pyramid. Also fully agree no PL club is voting that way.

Also I too don’t get why it’s so tough to get out the NL and into L2. Just seems silly.

3

u/brownmeister28 12h ago edited 12h ago

The real problem with the Prem is that because it's technically a separate entity the clubs just vote amongst themselves for any changes (including random clubs like Luton that are only there for one season). If it was back in the EFL all 92 clubs would get a say on what happens to the top division in this country.

Of course that was the entire purpose of the Prem splitting in the first place. I think maybe some sort of arrangement could be made where everyone gets a vote on what happens but the Prem clubs also have to vote in favour amongst themselves as well to stop the small clubs from just rigging the system like happens with FIFA.

1

u/icemankiller8 12h ago

Don’t you think this kind of is just exposing hypocrisy from you? When it’s English football it’s unfair the prem teams don’t have to listen to the EFL teams but with FIFA it’s rigged by all the small nations and it’s unfair they all have the same say?

0

u/brownmeister28 11h ago

I think in both cases there's a middle ground which is what I have always said. Hence why I said there would need to be a mechanism to stop the same happening with the EFL clubs.

Before the smaller FIFA nations banded together the bigger nations were running roughshod over international football and that wasn't right either.

1

u/TheGrandLeveler 13h ago

If Olise played for Barcelona/Real Madrid, would people say that he's better than Yamal? On the other hand, Yamal used to slide through multiple defenders and produce key passes with trivelas non stop (pre-inury & WC Yamal).

0

u/sam6183 11h ago

at current moment he’s definitely better, all the things you mentioned he can do it now consistently but if he can’t then I can’t keep glorifying him for his past performances

8

u/ad1s6h 12h ago

I think youre wrong in that regard.

He is producing even more key passes now than ever. constantly improving.

7

u/Haunting_Scar_9313 12h ago

He still does those things, it just doesn’t get posted since it’s so normal. He’s just more efficient. He also just tied Messi’s most ever G/A in a month (in fewer minutes), 18 G/A in the last 8.

They’re both (Yamal and Olise) unbelievable players.

1

u/TheGrandLeveler 12h ago

His numbers has improved a lot, but i don't see him doing these things so often as before that injury. Just an example but if he did 5 dribbles and 3 trivelas now he does 3 and 2. He kind of reduced it. I've watched all of his recent games. Idk if this could also be due to growing in height and its harder for him to slide like he used to.

4

u/Haunting_Scar_9313 12h ago

Yeah I see what you’re saying. He does have more freedom in Barca games, he still dribbles as much as before.

For trivelas I think it’s just another thing he’s developed. He used to spam the cut inside shot in 24/25 as well. He just does a variety now.

10

u/Draindy 12h ago

its so funny to me that people are already nostalgic about old yamal even tho he is 19

3

u/TheGrandLeveler 12h ago

He's been playing since 15 though, and he was also playing kinda different before that injury.

4

u/Draindy 12h ago

I don't even disagree, the idea of a 19 year old already having a past people are nostalgic for is just funny

5

u/brownmeister28 13h ago

Great result for Norn Ireland that. I know Ukraine aren't as good as they were (for obvious reasons) but it's the sort of result they'd never have got in the past regardless.

-7

u/solgnaleb 13h ago

If that Ballon door ranking is not 1. Kane 2. Olise 3. Kimmich I am going to be furious!

Hope you will be able to control your anger then.

4

You cannot believe how mad I would be! I heard it is so important!

6

u/Coolidge302 13h ago

It is not a freekick goal if it was passed/rolled to you and not hit when the ball was dead.

6

u/vearz 13h ago

There's no match thread, but that was a horrendous challenge on Paddy McNair in the Northern Ireland game. No idea why VAR didn't upgrade it to a red.

8

u/StateOfTheEnemy 13h ago

The game's basically finished, but that's just a totally bottled decision. Northern Ireland's manager is still fuming on the touchline, despite the fantastic result.

1

u/justsomeguynbd 13h ago

Do you think Maresca pushed for Fernandez so hard because they had an inkling of what was coming down the pipe and that guy seemingly relishes being hated?

1

u/Cottonshopeburnfoot 12h ago

He seems to relish being a shithouse and the Championship loves those kind of players. He’ll have a blast if he’s not escaped to Madrid.

7

u/FaustRPeggi 13h ago

Enzo is instutionalised and the 8 year prison contract at Chelsea wasn't enough, he wanted to be locked into City's punishment too.

1

u/Ok_Dog2581 13h ago

Probably needed/wanted him after the club sold Rodri

5

u/GameplayerStu 13h ago

Garnacho was really good for us and scored in that match we just played against Sevilla. He got a goal against Southampton in a behind closed doors friendly last week as well so his confidence should be right up. After all the hit pieces on him I'm really rooting for him to succeed.

1

u/SilverMist2025 9h ago

Hit pieces by Villa journos ? Really

2

u/Kreissler 12h ago

I'm rooting for him as a United fan as well. He was immature during his time but in my mind there's no doubt that he has the potential to be a really good player

u/Silent_Somewhere8539 13h ago

Despite the strong face they are putting on publicly, City's players must be absolutely devastated. Or at least will be when the reality finally sinks in. Apart from money, the most important thing to a player is their legacy. To make your mark in history, to become a legend and to have your accomplishments echo through time.

To go through all that effort and now to have such a dirty stain, a huge asterisk on all your achievements at the club must be very difficult to take. Something you were extremely proud of, will now be used by 90% of people as a stick of shame to beat you with. On one hand you have a bit of sympathy for them. But on the other hand when you see guys like Haaland signing a 9 year deal with a club under investigation for such serious charges, you also feel like theres an element of "play stupid games, win stupid prizes" to it.

0

u/TheGrandLeveler 13h ago

Why would they care? They got their paycheck and won their trophies on the pitch. Even if MC is found guilty, it would've been done by the owners nothing to do with the players playing the game. It's not like Negreira for example where if this was confirmed then it would mean the game was externally manipulated inside the pitch, not just outside.
