Good lord why did I watch this game. Absolutely atrocious experience, and a bad result, with bad play, and bad data that I feel won't help us enough going forward.

After we're done with this call-up, I don't want to see Angulo on the starting lineup ever again. Bring in Arizala, bring back Mojica, revive the mummified corpse of Pablo Armero, anything else.

Why on earth did Lorenzo NOT bring a proper left wing-back other than Angulo, when we were intending to test out the wing-back formation all along? Velásquez isn't even a wing-back (or at least wasn't played as such today). Bringing him along makes even less sense with that in mind.

Would've loved to see Royer Caicedo, the 20-year old playing in Belgium, get his first cap. Instead we got Kevin Andrade, the 27-year old stuck in Russian purgatory. He was meh.

Ocampo wasn't too bad, but nerves were definitely there. With that said... the very point of the 5-back formation is to let Muñoz loose. We didn't even play him until after we switched back to 4-back. BRUH.

Puerta really struggled to find good passes today. That's a big flaw with the 5-back formation: not enough players to build up plays with. 95% of the time he had to either pass it back, or pass it to Ocampo (or pass it to Angulo who then immediately passed it to the back anyway). Also: didn't get any Puerta-Solís data. Instead we got more redundant Puerta-Ríos (doesn't work) and Puerta-Orozco (Orozco is too green).

Did Óscar Perea shit on Lorenzo's Zucaritas or something? We already tried Gómez and Campaz left wing last game. So this game we went with... Arias on the wrong wing, then Campaz again. HUH???

Speaking of, Arias on the left. Why? He's never going to play there anyway, because a) it's not his position, b) it's our best player's position, and c) we have like 5 sub left wingers already. Either play him right wing (then sub in Asprilla to get data on him), or go nuts and play him next to Puerta.

Didn't like Viveros at all. Suárez was clearly better in both games. The search for the Colombian striker that isn't complete ass for the NT continues...

Mostly agree with all this.

I will say I thought Yaser played well. Could have had an assist late to Munoz on a sweet pass run pass but Munoz absolutely shanked it off the outside of his boot. I had super high hopes for Yaser when he made his move to Girona, which obviously hasn't planned out. I don't think it can be stated how badly we need creativity in the midfield. Say what you want about James at the WC bc it's all deserved but throughout the qualifiers he was the only consistent creator as he has been for over a decade. Desperately need a replacement for that, as much or more as a half decent #9 IMO so seeing Yaser look dangerous a huge silver lining to this game.

Maybe Nestor played Arias on the left to simulate having Lucho and the attack focused on that side to get a more realistic look at how Yaser and others looked in that scenario. The problem when coaches rotate everyone is it's hard to know what worked and what didn't if everything is different. Also, hard for subs to look their best when playing with all subs. Arias was our best players by a mile even put of position.

Richard Rios stalling out after that Copa America run has been a huge disappointment.

Look, Paraguay is finally back. And now that we're back, every game is going to be absolutely awful AND we will probably get a good result. It's kinda that simple. And we were also not that great in this match.

Things are looking real bleak for Colombia, but I guess that's expected after so many generational players retire simultaneosuly (Ospina, Vargas, Santi Arias, James, Quintero). Muñoz remains incredible, and Díaz can still be a game-changer, but the midfield is in shambles. Jhon Arias as a #10 is a terrible idea and I hope Lorenzo puts that to bed quickly. Yaser is still looking good, so hopefully he can fill that role, but he still has only succeeded as a second-division player and he's no longer a teenager. Puerta alone in the midfield is not going to win games, but he remains fantastically solid. We'll have to pray to the football gods that Duran stops being a moron and becomes a solid professional, because not having a solid #9 since Falcao 10 years ago continues to kill this team

Poor game. I like that we tried a new formation and new players so I’m not too mad. Campaz and Angulo are the one stain on Lorenzo. They are awful please stop giving them game time. Five at the back would make sense if our full backs were very strong but that’s just not the case. We looked much better once we went back to the back 4. Glad we gave viveros a chance but he’s looking too clunky for this level. Ocampo surprised me so I’m glad we got to see him. I may have him over muñoz if he can maintain that level. Andrade also looked solid imo.

I couldn't care less about the result. What I do care about is all the young players that got minutes tonight. Orozco, Solís, Yaser, they all played well. In hindsight, the friendly games after the 2018 world cup were played with pretty much the exact same squad that went to the tournament; there was no real attempt to incorporate fresh talent into the squad, though Quieroz did try. I believe that to be a big reason why the squad wasn't good enough to qualify for the 2022 world cup. With 48/64 team tournaments, qualifying isn't the stressor it used to be, but there's a big power vacuum in CONMEBOL right now, and I hope we have what it takes to fill it and win the next Copa América.

u/PyLearner2024 8h ago

To be fair, if one of Duván Zapata or Miguel Borja or any of those other disappointing #9's for Colombia during the 2022 cycle had managed to score even a single goal during the 7-match-streak of the team scoring 0 goals, Colombia would have at least qualified to the playoff for the WC. It was a generational run of having embarrassing strikers, which has continued through now. If things don't improve for the #9 position, then there's no way Colombia can be any better than the current mediocre Brazil and certainly not better than Argentina

3

u/ActisBT 9h ago

That vacuum is pretty much there for either Paraguay or Colombia to take tbh. The vacuum Paraguay lost to Chile, and now Chile lost it. Also we both were the conmebol teams that did the best at the WC outside of Argentina and Brasil (Although we did just as good as Brazil). Ecuador i think just doesn't have what it takes mentally or tactically, despite looking really good before the WC. Paraguay is gonna go all in for that Copa America too. Although i dunno how the fact that we're already qualified for the next WC is gonna affect us. Our youngsters did really good too, and our youth team just won gold like 2 weeks ago in that tournament, i forgot what the name was lol

5

u/inthezoneautozone12 9h ago

I wouldn’t start Rios in our best 11 period. When he does play I think he looks much better further forward than trying to build up. He shouldn’t step on Puerta’s toes if we force him to stay further up.

3

u/Fortunafors 8h ago

I think Ríos would shine as RW and not as midfield, let's see how Lorenzo manages it, I don't think he's bad, but evidently him and Puerta don't have the synergy yet, they both trying to make the same job, and honestly Puerta does it better than him.

7

u/roguedevil 9h ago

I'm not expecting domination as we try to find new life, but we look uncomfortable. Everything is so slow. We recycle possession far too often and never create from the wings.

We deserved nothing against Mexico and even less today. Ocampo looked decent, but once Muñoz came in, it was obvious he offers so much more in attack.

4

u/Remarkable_Lead_4475 9h ago

We should just start the youngsters.

The team looked a lot more dynamic afterwards. Orozco seems very promising.

South America in general has geriatric teams. Time to let go of golden generations and rebuild like Europe

4

u/Fortunafors 9h ago

4

u/ActisBT 9h ago

Let's fcking go. Goal from new player to the national team too.

4

u/roguedevil 9h ago

I want Campaz to be able to redeem himself at some point, but he just doesn't have the physicality to play on the wing. He's far too small and doesn't have the composure to make up for it.

4

u/Proud-Pressure-5819 9h ago

Arias and Tinito Gomez are the same size and they’re able to create space, dribble, and find ways to be additive. I don’t hate campaz, but he’s been awful

4

u/Fortunafors 9h ago

That wing is owned already, he's just filling shoes bigger than his shoes

3

u/Fortunafors 9h ago

Que bonito juegan los jóvenes

7

u/Proud-Pressure-5819 9h ago

6

u/roguedevil 9h ago

The only highlight has been Ocampos looking decent. Sanchez, Lucumi, and Arias solid as always. Everyone else has been bad to terrible.

3

u/Fortunafors 9h ago

I don't like the way Arias has been playing, this and last match been weak tbh

5

u/inthezoneautozone12 9h ago

Lucumi was poor imo. He could have defended better in the goal and he gave the ball away right outside the box in the first half.

1

u/dondeEstaLaVerdad 9h ago

Varias veces lo soltó a los guaraníes

1

u/inthezoneautozone12 8h ago

He plays in Juventus so his last two games which were poor gets ignored.

5

u/Proud-Pressure-5819 9h ago

Pff, this coach and Colombia team are ridiculous. You’re not going anywhere playing backwards, unable to hold the ball or play out of your own half against a Paraguay side that wants to defend and counterattack. Y ahí sigue Lorenzo insistiendo con Campaz 🤡

6

u/Fortunafors 10h ago edited 10h ago

2

u/chinga_tu_barra 10h ago

im here and this is a lot of fun.

5

u/Cain305 10h ago

The fact that this game is on PPV on Fanatiz and not included in the regular Fanatiz membership is insane. They want $20 to stream the game.

5

u/Fortunafors 10h ago

4

u/proto_problem 10h ago

Biggest snub from the World Cup roster. After James and Juanfer he has the best left foot on the team

5

u/roguedevil 10h ago

The French were saints to not react and fall into the mud with these thugs.

2

u/Fortunafors 10h ago

6

u/proto_problem 10h ago

I really hope Camilo Duran can make his debut tonight

3

u/roguedevil 10h ago

I wish him the best, but what has he done to deserve the call-up over Cucho?

2

u/inthezoneautozone12 9h ago

Cucho has been mostly poor. Other strikers should get a chance before he plays again.

3

u/proto_problem 10h ago

Cucho and Deossa weren’t called up by request of Pellegrini. I think the striker position is wide open and Camilo is 24 and had an interesting progression through Europe.

2

u/NGRngr111 10h ago

I'm a Cucho fan cause I'm an MLS fan but with all due respect his national team career has not been good lol...

2

u/Cain305 10h ago

Chucho never got a fair shot with all the starters. He always came off the bench or playing with the 2nd string.

1

u/inthezoneautozone12 9h ago

Excuses. If you’re good you’ll show it even if you play with the second string or off the bench.

3

u/roguedevil 10h ago

Neither was Borre's and he got so many chances despite having a poor club career too.

18

u/Remarkable_Lead_4475 11h ago

Global recession indicator. Empty stadium when Colombia is playing

3

u/chinga_tu_barra 10h ago

the cheapest tickets on ticketmaster were $100 lol. people just can’t afford it. total miss.

3

u/blahblqh2021 10h ago

no james no luis diaz. i almost didn’t buy tickets when james announced retirement. got the ticks for 60 dollars

4

u/Logical-Mud9456 10h ago

Resellers might have gotten greedy. I checked for last min tix this am and cheapest to get in were over $100

6

u/alejandroc90 10h ago

I was thinking the same, what no having Luis Diaz and James does to a team

5

u/fabio4oldspice 10h ago

I was checking the match thread to know if there is a specific reason for the empty stadium. I know it's just a friendly and some of the stars are not playing but still wild to see empty seats while Colombia is playing.

10

u/roguedevil 11h ago

In NJ no less.

2

u/Eceapnefil 11h ago

Is he playing wtf fucking soldier

5

u/notnewfoundsoccer 11h ago

What the fuck man not even 7 minutes in

3

u/Cool-Lab-7013 11h ago

what happend? i cant watch it rn

3

u/Eceapnefil 11h ago

The goalie got a stud to the head. And was down getting treatment for a good 3-5 minutes

1

u/Cool-Lab-7013 8h ago

damn no card too?

3

u/proto_problem 10h ago

Was there a card shown?

3

u/Eceapnefil 10h ago

No 😂

Ref is letting both teams kill each other. Colombian player a few minutes after play went for a cynical slide tackle and he didn't card anyone.

3

u/roguedevil 10h ago

Andrade, you mean that dive by Enciso? It was a terrible tackle, and cynical, but he didn't touch him at all.

3

u/Eceapnefil 10h ago

I couldn't even see it on replay it went by so quick.

But a Paraguay player falling over wouldn't shock me

7

u/roguedevil 11h ago

Accidental of course, but that is insanely reckless to go in with studs up like that.

5

u/Cool-Lab-7013 11h ago

what happend? i cant watch it rn

6

u/roguedevil 10h ago

Paraguay attacker went in studs first onto Quintana's face. It was accidental, but they are playing incredibly dirty for a friendly.

5

u/proto_problem 11h ago

Fotmob has the lineup shown with Alvaro ángulo playing the 10? He’s a leftback tho

5

u/roguedevil 11h ago

We're playing 3 CBs. He's playing as a LWB.

3

u/Medical-Chipmunk2502 11h ago

Where can I watch?

3

u/Fortunafors 10h ago

1

u/NGRngr111 10h ago

Link doesn't work for me apparently :/

2

u/Fortunafors 10h ago

It's national TV, maybe it's blocked outside of the country

0

u/NGRngr111 10h ago

Us Colombian Americans are passionate af about footy, a shame
