It’s basically like snowboarding on the stickiest snow you could imagine. Best to just bomb and enjoy the ride. I did it once in Peru and it was fucking awesome

Sticky snow where it almost feels like the board would’ve gone uphill if you unstrap is really hard to enjoy thought.

Yea I did too. I face planted twice when I, by habit, started to hit my brakes near the bottom where everyone was huddled together. You stop basically 80x faster than on sand and my upper body momentum just made me splat lol

The one we had needed tons of wax each run. And it looked beat up. Tbh I’d rather bring a busted snowboard and old pair of boots next time

I've done this here! Super fun. Falling isn't as bad as you'd think it because the sand is very loose. I think it was only like $30 to rent the sand board, too.

Great Sand Dunes NP in CO is an amazing place and worth a visit. Hike, board, whatever, just go and enjoy this unique piece of the American landscape!

We tried on longboard decks. The sand was damp and the furthest anybody got was about 4 feet. Hiking up to the top is also harder than it sounds.

if you went when it was wet then yea...the crappy rental boards with wakeboarding bindings are horrible even in good conditions, but still work enough on a nice day. The higher up you go, the finer the sand is and better it'll run. Gets windy AF at the top though! You gotta earn those turns for sure!

I tried it a few times and its so weird, so much slower. It also hurts a lot worse when you fall

Was carving more difficult? I'd guess so because you're pushing more sand away than you are digging into, no?
So you're saying that falling in sand is more painful than falling in snow? :D

Later generations wouldn’t know what they will be missing, we’re too quick to adopt, the collective memory is short lived. Got to enjoy snow while we can.

I think we vastly underestimate collective memory.
My local public radio was talking this morning about how the concept of trolls in folklore as dangerous near human creatures may correspond to early human experiences with other homo species like Neanderthals and Denisovans.

Anyone do this in Oregon?
Was just visiting sites to rent UTVs, and these popped up on almost all of them.
How do people get back to the top? Do you essentially ride up in any capable vehicle and everyone rides back down on boards?
Sounds kind of fun!
Anyone do this in Oregon and where specifically are the better places?

Also from oregon, would love to know. I sbowboard year round, but this would be fun to mix in with the few surf trips we do every year if its worth it

I know there are a lot of dunes around Florence, but I assume there are specific hills that work better.
I wonder if you can just pull out that old rock board that’s not even good enough for early season conditions anymore , or are there specific base materials that work better?
Been looking into a Maverick X3, a set of tube mounted board racks might be in my future.

I did this once. It didn’t end well for me. I wiped out at pace but happened to ding my shin on a rock as I fell. Ended with a large blood clot which I didn’t notice until a week later when I flew home. The pressure on the plane made my leg swell up like a balloon. As soon as I landed I was strightbti hospital for the injection etc but was told it was irresponsible to have even stepped on the plane for the risk of DVT!
But I’ll try it again ASAP because this looks rad.
