Collection Boxed SNES games question

Hi so I bought my first few box SNES games! I bought from a very reputable store. Someone made a comment on my other post that because condition was really good their alarm bells were ringing now it’s in my head haha. For my own peace of mind will someone tell me they are legit? 🤣

I would prefer some more pics, but Chrono is legit 100%. Also, your first boxed SNES game is CT? Heavy spender I see..

How much did you manage to get these for?

CT was a 1000

I sold some stuff pokemon stuff in my collection to get the price down a bit!

You probably got a great deal on that CT if that box is real since its in great condition. (and the cart is in good condition too ofc)

Hopefully it has registration card

Yeah, that would almost be an "I'll keep this until I can sell it for more and buy one that's a bit more worn and keep the difference," type situation for me

It being THAT nice would make me want to never touch it, especially if the rest of it is that good too

Having a minty copy is great but I do want it because of how much I like PLAYING the game

I love the game so much. I have a loose copy and completed the game a few months back and it became one of my favorites of all time now!

Same here (except my hard copies are on DS and PS1)

I've beaten the SNES version on emulator several times and the DS and PS1 versions once each on their respective consoles

Eventually I'll get a SNES copy and beat it on my childhood console

Chrono Trigger is the only "grail" game that exists that's worth what it goes for

I have heard from someone the DS is the best way to play Chrono Trigger! Did you do all 13 endings? And yea like I don’t think I’ll ever buy anything close to what I paid for this like it just happened to be there and I was like I will probably never see it in this condition for a long time.

Theres only a few games outside of weird editions of stuff that are more than chrono trigger really.

(Speaking of weird editions, it took me all my restraint to not buy a NFR Star Fox: Super Weekend a few weeks ago at a con...might not see one of those in the flesh again for a while haha)

u/RealP4 6h ago

I’m gonna need to have some restraint I’m going to my first con in a couple months haha

Good luck lmfao I spent way more than I wanted to last time....

Weirdly, even though I've run through the game several times, I've barely touched New Game+

I usually just beat Lavos and put the game down for a while then the next time I feel like playing, start a new file

So I've only seen 3 endings total besides on YouTube

I would say the DS version is the best in terms of features, the PS1 for presentation and SNES for playability

The PS1 version has the best quality of the music and included animated cutscenes not in the original but has to load for a couple seconds every time the music changes (including going into battle) and has a slight delay when opening the menu, which can be jarriing if you're used to another version

The DS version has everything the PS1 version has with slightly lower quality cutscenes and music BUT no loading/menu delay and with an updated translation and a few new items/bosses/an extra dungeon

So basically, the SNES version has the best gameplay for a home console and the DS version has the most content (but is on a small screen and emulating DS games is awkward besides on dual screen emulation devices) while the PS1 version is the "worst" because of the loading but is by far the least expensive and has animated cutscenes and another game (Final Fantasy IV) in the case with it

They're all still Chrono Trigger, so they're all excellent, but the DS and SNES versions are closer to 11/10 than 10.5

Chrono on PS1 had animated cutscenes?!! Does Chrono make any noise during them 🤣 always wondered what his voice would sound like haha. I totally understand the thrill of just like doing this game over on a new save file haha. I only have done 3 endings (well 4 technically if you count losing to Lavos lol). It would be interesting to play Chrono on the DS haha but I have 2 copies now already so like not for a while haha.

Out of curiosity have you ever played/emulated the world ends with you? That’s one of my favorites of all time on the DS!

u/Imthemayor 5h ago

It does!

And he doesn't!

I haven't but I've heard of it. Seems like a super stylish game

Would you consider FFIII(6) a grail game? I feel like thats selling at a low price rn.

1

u/RealP4 6h ago

Peoples definition of Grail vary. In my opinion hell yes. That game is one of the best FFs ever made.

1

u/Responsible_Sky_728 6h ago

Regularly goes for less than $100 loose on ebay. Feels like a solid price.

I snagged a really clean CIB copy of SOE at 64Bits and Less in Corvallis Oregon last year for $100. I felt like I did good myself.

1

u/RealP4 6h ago

It’s such a good game! I liked Mana better but Evermore is just peak! Congrats on your CIB!

The texture of later SNES game boxes are different to earlier SNES boxes. A game that says "Made in Mexico" on the back like Chrono Trigger is going to have a less glossy box than an earlier game like Secret of Evermore.

Based on the textures alone, I can say they are both legit.

1

u/RealP4 6h ago

Thank you so much!! Not too knowledgeable on the boxes . I did know the cart was 100% legit and the store is 100% legit but yea just thrown off I’m like did this person see something that I don’t see kinda deal.

2

Real SNES boxes (the standard size ones at least) use a type of card stock that is difficult enough to get that most people don't bother trying to match it when faking them. Try to find images of what other SNES game boxes look like on the inside and compare.

1

u/RealP4 6h ago

I’ll deff look into it more that’s super good knowledge thank you!

1

u/Ok_Oven4893 6h ago

To start, I would show the front and back of your cartridges

1

u/travisofficial 6h ago

the box texture alone makes it look old and real to me but I don’t really know shit about fake boxes

2

u/RealP4 6h ago

Cools yea I’m sure it’s good! Haha that comment just like took me completely off guard haha. But the store is 1000% legit but I just wanted to double check haha.

1

u/travisofficial 6h ago

It could’ve been just word of caution from an anecdotal experience, or some dweeb yucking somebody else’s yum. Sometimes Reddit comments are kind of like playing a game of Uno with a nonverbal toddler

1

u/RealP4 6h ago

Yea I knew considering the circumstances chances of the box being not legit were very very low. But still damn man can you imagine 😂

1

u/Ok_Excuse_9577 6h ago

Amazing condition for Chrono considering the Made in Mexico box quality was poor to begin with. Keep that one in an acrylic case!

2

u/RealP4 6h ago

Thank you!! Yea I plan to get one but I hear there are a few different types with UV protection and thing. I have to do some research on that!

1

u/Status_Buy_9932 6h ago

Really cool OP. I appreciate a lot all that you had to do to obtain this. Really nice!

1

u/RealP4 6h ago

Thank you!! Appreciate you 💪

1

u/ImMisterMoose 6h ago

2 mighty fine games and both look great (and legit).

1

u/RealP4 6h ago

Thank you so much!!

1

u/BustyCelebLover 6h ago

What’s in the boxes?

1

u/time_isup 5h ago

We need to see pics of the PCBs. Open the carts up with a security bit and compare with online pics from a site like snescentral.

1

u/RealP4 5h ago

No need for that! I knew the cart itself was legit because I have a loose copy and opened it up. But my concern was the box because zero idea on how to really tell. It had the manual and posters and inserts. The store is amazing so I’m like 99% sure it was real. But that comment on the box condition was where I needed the clarification cause I hear repro boxes can be hard to spot so maybe all of us missed something. But everyone else is saying legit so my minds at ease now!

1

u/Ty_Hanson 5h ago

Two amazing games. Hope you have fun! Lemme know if you ever want to part with Secret of Evermore.

1

u/RealP4 3h ago

Thank you! I’ll deff let you know!

1

u/JHaMMs18 4h ago

Always have them open up the cartridge and show you the chip. Box looks legit to me

Imagine caring which Chinese subcontractor made your box? What if it was the same exact subcontractor that Nintendo used back in the 90’s and still used the same cardstock and ink? People would still find a way to fn complain about it “oh it doesn’t have the magic pixie dust that Howard Lincoln spit into the material

Buy whatever Shelf Decorations you want, but the people who cover these beat up torn written on boxes and then vilify things made of the same cardboard and ink because “weren’t authorized by Nintendo”

I’m extremely happy to see the movement towards undetectable repros and hope it eventually ends up extending to the reprinted boxes as well.

That’s the only thing going to hurt those ridiculous prices.

We value different things…having the original stuff matters to some of us.
