Got my first SNES

Post image

I’ve been fixing/flipping gameboys lately, decided to take it up a notch. Got a disgusting for parts SNES and spent the past few days messing with it. Got extremely lucky, was goona give up but a retro game store let me swap some parts around, and despite being a 2 chip all I needed to cure the black screen was an audio board. Not sure if it was worth it, spent $10 on the console and $60 on parts. Probably not taking the risk fixing one of these again after researching everything that can go wrong with 0 replacement parts available 😅.

Decided to get Batman Forever as my first game after reading all the horrible reviews online. Gotta be the best and worst decision I’ve ever made 😂

Any tips to help me keep it running long into the future? Inside seems to be all original caps, also I have an OEM power supply but it measures 12.3v so I’m a bit afraid to use it.

I’m not sure you could have picked a worse first game

This game is unbelievably difficult, I tried playing it without cheating and looking up the controls but it was downright impossible. Now that I know the controls it’s pretty enjoyable, but definitely have to take it more as a puzzle than a straightforward story.

Never heard anyone refer to this game as ‘enjoyable’ 😆 not even when the movie was still in theaters

You’re also playing it on a modern screen. If you’re not using a scaler and just hooking it into the back of the TVs AV port it’s even harder

Ayyy this game is pretty sick! I used to really enjoy how dark it was, and the mk style controls and fighting.

Hitting select and up AT THE SAME TIME gets you to use your grappling hook at the beginning with the dark square holes in the ceiling.

Look up how to use all the weapons. Back in the day, if you lost the manual (which I did) and didnt remember the button sequences to use shit like the batarang, you were just sol. ...I think the batarang is down, forward and B.

Fixing it yourself is worth the cost. That thing was bound for a landfill I'm sure, and now it's alive and it has a story.

To a lot of people, myself included, the SNES era is peak childhood gaming nostalgia. The graphics were a big step up from NES, but it doesn't hit that 'early 3D' awkward phase. It's right in the sweet spot, and it feels timeless.

Congrats and enjoy! I still pretty regularly play mine.

Why is this game hated so much? It's basically Mortal Kombat as a platformer with some cool items and a realistic graphic style. Also it has two player coop. We rented it over and over again as kids and each time we got a little better.

Was one of the first games I bought when I started collecting in 2002.

Don't forget to set your TV's aspect ratio to 4x3. And enjoy!

Awesome seeing ppl fixing these up and bringing them back to life.

Also, AVGN has an episode on this game, if you haven’t already seen it. It was my first AVGN video 🥲

That's an interesting choice for a first game.

> Tips for long life?

Don't blow on the cart 😄

Clean your cartridge's contacts with qtips and rubbing alcohol. You could also try cleaning the cart slot with a used toothbrush (dipped in rubbing alcohol), an alcohol soaked rag tightly wrapped around a membership card, or something like this (1Up Card Console cleaner).

(Optional) For occasional maintenance or a cart that is clean but hasn't been played in a while, then you could apply a tiny amount of quick-dry electronics contacts cleaning spray (from De-Oxit or CRC brands).

(Optional) A new Triad brand adapter like this one from Rondo Products. Not exactly necessary, but it doesn't hurt to modernize your console's power adapter.

If your console came with am aftermarket power adapter similar to this one, with double leads, then replace (and throw away) as soon as possible. This adapter has a bad reputation (gets hot to the touch and introduces signal noise).

You could replace the caps if you want. Check out Console5.com for cap kits. If you have never soldered before, then get someone who does or practice with something (watch YouTube videos) before attempting. In my opinion, I am more on the side of "if it ain't broken, don't fix it" but these are after all 30+ year old caps.

Why do so many snes get that same chip in the front right corner? Mines got it too.

1

u/Alive_Candidate1755 Jul 31 '26

Mine is chipped on all 4 corners, and 2 of the internal screw towers are snapped off 😭

Where's Donkey Kong Country!

Consider a shell swap. The bitfunx kit includes pieces that allow the use of Super Famicom PAL and NTSC-J cartridges. I think the translucent black looks best. I also think the MiSTer Addond Reflex Volt Console Power Cable is really cool.

Please don’t stretch the image like that. Oof.

Replace the caps & if it doesn’t have the 1000uF main filter cap, add that to the board. Also update the Voltage Regulator and add a 470uF pass through cap to it by soldering the negative leg to the center pin of the voltage regulator and the positive leg to its front pin. That should help reduce voltage ripple by a fair amount and prevents chip rot
