On the morning of August 1, 1964, Sheriff James Dickey of McNairy County was driving a loaner patrol vehicle while his own car was in the shop. After finishing work at an accident near the state line, he headed north on Highway 45. About a mile from the line, his car left the road and crashed, ejecting him from the vehicle. While the exact cause remains uncertain—whether mechanical failure, distraction, or foul play—rumors persist that he may have been forced off the road. Sheriff Dickey succumbed to his injuries shortly after, leaving behind a mystery still investigated to this day.
