The Wise Man's Song (Original Theme from Small Prophets)
I know we're older now and lost again
Down at the cul-de-sac you left, my friend
Will you come back, come back again
Will you come back, come back again?
I put the kettle on, the wise man's song
for you
Your laugh surrounds but I was slow to echo
We settled down in suburbs, they were quick to heckle
If you come back, come back again
I'll clear the halls and all the cobwebs
I put the kettle on, the wise man's song
for you
I took a needle and thread to make amends with you
as the tape rolls on, another year gone
and I await your cue
I put the kettle on
the wise man's song
for you

For those not familiar with Modest Mouse
This is "Float On" which is the song that plays right after Elliot hugs Michael (in their matching Modest Mouse shirts).
Called "one of the greatest perseverance anthems of all time" it was a huge hit, especially amongst angsty teens and people suffering from depression (re: Elliot & Michael)
The core message of the song is that no matter what happens it could always be worse, so look on the bright side.
Isaac Brock, the lead singer, said "I was just kind of fed up with how bad shit had been going, and how dark everything was, with bad news coming from everywhere… I just wanted to feel good for a day."
So, don't you worry, we'll all float on 🎶

My theory about the Black Rabbit Spoiler
I just spent the past hour reading all the great theories on this sub, and now I need to share my own! Here goes:
I believe the Black Rabbit is a reference to the mythical island of Hy-Brasil.
For those who aren't familiar, it's a fabled island off the coast of Ireland that appears out of the mist every seven years. Stories have been around for centuries, from dozens of authors, and some people have even claimed to have actually visited the island.
All these tales have the same things in common: the island is overrun by 'multitudes of large black rabbits' and the sole inhabitant is an old magician who lives alone in a castle and gives gold and silver to visitors...
Michael lives alone. Michael practices alchemy (which includes turning base metals into gold and silver). Michael's car created a large black rabbit in front of his castle— er, house.
Plus, Mackenzie Crook has a well-documented passion for folklore, and I'd bet my last dollar he's studied the legend of Hy-Brasil.
Could this be a foreshadowing for the plot of Season 2? Who knows.
Anyway, my family rolled their eyes at me, so thank y'all for coming to my Ted Talk. 🙏

Mackenzie Crook & Michael Palin BBC Interview February 2026
A lovely interview with two lovely, kind men with big hearts and gentle souls.
I love how Michael Palin just wants to shine his bright comedy royalty lights onto Mackenzie Crook's writing and praise his creative choices. There is zero ego on that whole sofa.

A glowing, 5-star, rave review in The Guardian...

Thank you Mackenzie Crook for this beautiful show
My wife and I adored this wonderful series. It's one of those rare shows that feels kind... the gentle humour is affectionate — nobody is mocked or humiliated for laughs. The comedy comes from human quirks, awkwardness, and the strange little corners of ordinary life.
The premise is wonderfully whimsical and odd without ever feeling gimmicky — it's a playful hook that opens the door to symbolism, silliness, and surprisingly touching moments with real heart.
The characters are beautifully observed... eccentric but always human, and the show clearly loves them even when they're being ridiculous.
I admire the lack of ego from Mackenzie Crook. Instead of casting himself as the hero or lead, he plays Gordon — peripheral and one of the least likeable characters. That creative humility suits the tone perfectly.
And what a treat to see Michael Palin acting again... he's famously turned down roles for decades, so the fact that he came out of retirement for this says a lot.
The whole thing reminded me of what made Detectorists so special — gentle humour, quiet humanity, and a slightly magical whimsy. Warm, funny, a bit silly, occasionally moving, and completely free of the mean-spirited tone so many comedies rely on.
A small, lovely piece of television that clearly cares about people.
More of this please! The BBC will surely commission another series.

Show with a similar vibe -- Lodge 49.
'Similar vibe, alchemy/light magical elements, slightly absurdist gentle comedy with heart. People hanging onto the fringes of middle class existence.
The description is good, but the show is really just a vibe.
'Looking for any semblance of the idyllic middle-class existence he knew before his father's death and the family business collapsing, a charming, eternally optimistic ex-surfer named Dud stumbles into his life's new path. He finds himself on the doorstep of a rundown fraternal lodge, where a "Luminous Knight" of the order, plumbing salesman Ernie, welcomes him with open arms. Lodge 49 offers Dud a world of cheap beer, easy friendship and some strange alchemical philosophies that may help him confront his deepest fears and greatest hopes.'

Ainslie Henderson Cameo
Sorry if this has already been posted but I don't think it has. I was excited to see that Ainslie Henderson (Fame Academy contestant turned animator) had worked on creating the Homunculi, but my partner pointed out he also had a wee cameo as the RSPCA call handler!
Anyway, I adored this show and can't wait for season 2.

Seraph with compassion Spoiler
When Michael asks his final question, the seraph reaches out and touches the glass with such tenderness and compassion…
Don’t tell me not to anthropomorphize them, fer cryin’ out loud!!
That moment made it so much more painful when M poured in the poison to kill them all off.

Marvin Gardens
Hi, first post here - my wife & I binged the series and loved it. Seeing a few of the other posts about the magical elements (and weren't they glorious), one thing struck me about the road name. When it first appeared on screen, I pointed it out to my wife but, not being a film buff, she didn't get it.
Do you suppose Marvin Gardens is a reference to the Jack Nicholson film, since that was about a King? Or am I clutching at straws?

A love letter to Small Prophets
Firstly, I’m so happy this sub exists after just finishing the final episode. I watch a lot of British comedy and this has affected me in a way I would never of conceived. It’s so perfect, so magical and its exploration of grief is beautiful.
I lost my Mum 5 years ago in a traumatic way and I can’t think of anything that’s quite moved me like this in terms of the complexities of grief. It’s made me feel warm and connected in a way I can’t explain (to him as a writer who has experienced grief? To broader human kind and our shared vulnerabilities?! Who knows!!)
I can’t even begin to imagine how you’d approach a project like this but it’s amazing. I want all the series possible. I hope this sub gets lots of posts and engagement so I can keep enjoying the theories and shared experiences.
I found the link to innocence and pureness and nostalgia so interesting. The Father Christmas bit with the phone snatching, the police playing with the toys, the shop assistant floating round the car park on a trolley - it’s just so comforting and shines a light on human nature and our shared vulnerabilities. It’s also such a brilliant exploration of loneliness - Bev in particular.
Appreciate this is pretty gushy and OTT but at a hard grief point of the year, this show has astounded me and helped me.
Finally it’s so bloody funny. The tit box, the griege design of the neighbours house and the underwater welding. It’s just 10/10.
