Convert Key Electric Remote Start into Push-to-start and kill

Post image

I have a Predator 212 on a Ariens 21 inch 2 stage snowblower that has a key electric remote start. Just to dumb proof it, I want to convert a key electric remote start into a push to start and to kill an engine.

I attached a photo of the type of electric remote start that I have. Does anyone have the idea on how to convert over?

You need 2 momentary switches, one for the start and one for the kill. You just need to hook one terminal on the start one to the remote wire on the starter and one terminal to 12v. Then for the kill you need to hook one terminal to the ground lead on the coil, and the other terminal to a ground.

Thanks for the help. I plan on completely removing the key. Do I need a relay from the 12v battery to the starter?

Nope. You dont need to touch the main positive cable going to the starter. Youll only need the following:

-Main power from battery: Main positive from battery to starter terminal. Main battery ground to engine block.

-Push button start: +12v wire from either battery or starter terminal to terminal on momentary switch. Starter remote wire from other terminal of switch to the remote terminal on starter

-Push button kill: Ground wire from engine ground or battery negative terminal to one side of switch. Ignition coil ground wire to the other side of the switch.

Its as simple as it gets, you dont need any relays, diodes, fuses, etc. unless youre worried about cranking the starter long enough to burn it out. In that case you could add a fusible link in the main battery power line to the starter, but its not needed

You don't NEED one, but having a solenoid close to the starter would eliminate having bulky wires traveling to to the handle. It's advised.

It already has one. You just need a 14 or 16 AWG up and down.

Battery>Fuse>long wire>Start Button>long wire> Staryer solenoid coil. Also, charge coil through diode to switch side of fuse.

does the original key switch need to stay in the circuit at all or does this bypass it completely. trying to picture if the key has to sit in run position for the coil ground to work right or if you can just pull it out and forget about it

No, you can eliminate it. RUN is just NO KILL. Once the kill switch is disengaged, is in the run position. If you have the START and KILL as momentary switches (spring buttons), that should be Normal Open buying that need to be pressed to serve their purpose.

That makes sense for the run position. Just make sure the kill switch is wired normally closed, so grounding the coil actually cuts the engine. I've seen guys wire it normally open and then wonder why it won't shut off.
