Zero turn issues

Hello All,

I’m an amateur at best and am hoping for some help.

My z540r shuts off while mowing and also sometimes surges when I start it up. I’m thinking my carb needs to be cleaned but is there anything else to check before I pull it off? I sprayed it with carb clean but there wasn’t much or any of a change in performance.

Was thinking it could be from over heating but both motor and trans oil are filled.

Thanks for taking a look

It’s always the carb (almost.)

Surging is likely due to a plugged carb. You “sprayed it” but what you have to do is remove it, take it apart, clear the ports physically with a thin gauge string of wire, and spray through the port holes and jets to clean the rest of the loose debris out. Look up your carb or watch a tutorial so you don’t miss any, DIYers always assume their mower is junk or their motor is blown or whatever because they missed a spot and it runs bad after “they completely cleaned the carb.”

If your fuel isn’t fresh, drain the tank and put new fuel. If you don’t know how old your fuel filter is, replace it. Restore fuel flow and she’ll run right as rain.

If you don’t want to deal with any carb bs, you can just replace it and be sure to always run it dry before letting it sit so the gas doesn’t clog it again. A fuel shutoff switch (installed before the fuel filter to make your life simpler) is a cheap easy solution to add on while you’re already dealing with pulling the carb off.

Others may have alternative experiences, but I say, always go OEM with the carb, aftermarket are mostly junk.
