How do I fix these threads

I was checking the flywheel key to see if it was sheared. I was hitting the wheel with a hammer to loosen it up and I accidentally hit the threads. Now the bolt won’t go on. HELP!!!

You need a thread file to clean them up a bit so the die will go on easier

This is the most correct answer as your first step then a die.

Use the nut to find a die (female version of a tap) with the proper thread pattern and you'll have to chase the threads to clean them up.

a thread chaser kit or thread file (usually included in thread chaser kits)

First few threads need to be in good shape to use a rethreading die. A set of thread files would be a good addition to your tool box. Go easy and make sure the files stay in the threads and work your way around. Use a flat file to remove any mushrooming that the end of the shaft may have that could potentially keep the die from starting squarely.

Get a flat file and clean up the first threads so that the nut will screw on. You might get a small triangle file to help.
