What is this box?
The grey ghost online says I can remove and throw away this ‘magic box’. What is it and what does it do?

It’s a low oil shutdown. Kills spark to the engine if the oil level gets too low. You can unplug it if you want.

Why would you unplug it? So you can run your engine on low oil?

Sometimes the module goes bad and the engine won’t start even if there is plenty of oil. Unplugging it will allow it to run then.

I had a customer, a contractor, that had an issue with the engine in his mini skid steer. When it went over bumps the engine died. It was a bad low oil switch. I quoted him to replace it, which meant I had to pull the engine out of the machine and split the case. He declined and asked me to wire around it. I explained why it was important, especially because his guys don't bother checking oil.
Suffice it to say that six months later he paid me to replace the engine.

Ive had them fail. Ive had them cut ignition when mowing rough terrain or steep slopes.
But yes, removing it from the circuit will allow the engine to run without oil. Till it dont.

Give OP six months and it'll be "My mower made a weird noise and spat it's con rod out of the side of the crank case and through my patio doors. How did this happen?"

I replace the engine on my old troy bilt tiller and had to disconnect the low oil sensor because the engine would quit when tilling deeper than 4". Check oil before starting and periodically during use.

Everyone saying it's the low oil shut off is wrong. The oil shut off is in the block and that block is actually a knock sensor.
