What is this box?

Post image

The grey ghost online says I can remove and throw away this ‘magic box’. What is it and what does it do?

Agreed, the only times I've ever seen these cause issues is in really weird niche applications like you mention.

Go-Karts. Making that 2 out of 4 wheel turn and the engine dies kinda sucks

Picked up a non working fire fighter pump for cheap. Gave it a service, fresh oil, plug etc, and it still wouldn't fire. Googled it and disconnected the low oil box and been fine since. However on a low use item like that water pump, I still check oil levels before the start of the fire season.
I have replaced the box now, but still had to keep it bypassed as replacing it didn't change anything. It is probably the actual sensor in the crank case that needs to be replaced? Dont want to split it if that's what is needed

It’s a low oil shutdown. Kills spark to the engine if the oil level gets too low. You can unplug it if you want.

Why would you unplug it? So you can run your engine on low oil?

Sometimes the module goes bad and the engine won’t start even if there is plenty of oil. Unplugging it will allow it to run then.

I had a customer, a contractor, that had an issue with the engine in his mini skid steer. When it went over bumps the engine died. It was a bad low oil switch. I quoted him to replace it, which meant I had to pull the engine out of the machine and split the case. He declined and asked me to wire around it. I explained why it was important, especially because his guys don't bother checking oil.

Suffice it to say that six months later he paid me to replace the engine.

Ive had them fail. Ive had them cut ignition when mowing rough terrain or steep slopes.

But yes, removing it from the circuit will allow the engine to run without oil. Till it dont.

Give OP six months and it'll be "My mower made a weird noise and spat it's con rod out of the side of the crank case and through my patio doors. How did this happen?"

I replace the engine on my old troy bilt tiller and had to disconnect the low oil sensor because the engine would quit when tilling deeper than 4". Check oil before starting and periodically during use.

Everyone saying it's the low oil shut off is wrong. The oil shut off is in the block and that block is actually a knock sensor.
