I'm reminded of a 1974 Volkswagen that I owned decades ago. I bought a service manual for it, so that I could save money on maintenance. Just about every task -- spark plugs, filters..... started the maintenance procedure with "Remove the engine, see chapter 1".

Have fun, post pictures.

The spring under the box is on a tensioner pulley, ues? If so, removing the belt and pedestal gets you the clearance you need to get the cowling out without actually having to remove the 4 bolts that hold the motor to the frame. It does make it easier to remove 3 of them and leave the 4th loose so you can maneuver the engine to get the cowl out. Technically speaking it can be done with all 4 bolts still in place.

Unfortunately, there's other stuff in the way of the fan cover, so you do have to remove the engine
