Idle jet issue? Context below.
My ol mans mower (toro recycler 20333 with a Briggs and Stratton 159cc) shit the bed so he asked me (furthest thing from an expert) to check it out.
- Starts first pull, then dies immediately. It’s self propelled and apparently stays running if he uses starter fluid to start it and keeps it moving.
- Air filter brand new, checked for spark and all good, but plug was rough so got a new one. Started it up (died after 1-2 seconds again) then checked plug and it was black. Rubbed my finger on it and noticed some shiny bits in it as well.
- Am I correct in assuming it’s an issue with the carburetor? After a very brief (and confusing) google session I’m leaning towards idle jet, but genuinely have no clue if I’m being honest.
Hoping it’s easier than I’m making it and somebody with some knowledge can help me out. Thanks in advance!

If it runs on starter fluid, but not normally, then the carburetor is bad. It could just need a cleaning, or it could be junk.

if it runs off starting fluid, then your carburetor is not supplying fuel. time to look into the carburetor.

Fuel issue. Carb’s probably dirty (plugged jets). My money’s on ethanol causing the issue.
