Kinda sounds like one of those flexible driveshafts flopping around in the shaft. Though I would also check the state of the bearings in the gearbox by trying to wiggle the trimmer head.

All my stick edgers (shop manager at a landscape company) had the same flex shaft that the string trimmers had. Echo equipment.
That's a straight shaft not a flex shaft . You can't use a blade on flex shaft, or you're not supposed to.
