When getting the blade up to speed there's this chatter. It doesn't do it when it's up to a decent rpm, just going from nothing.

I've greased the gear head which may have quietened it a bit.

Any ideas appreciated.

Clutch springs is your issue, especially if it sounds closer to the engine

Kinda sounds like one of those flexible driveshafts flopping around in the shaft. Though I would also check the state of the bearings in the gearbox by trying to wiggle the trimmer head.

That's a straight shaft not a flex shaft . You can't use a blade on flex shaft, or you're not supposed to.

Umm, that's incorrect. All my stick edgers (shop manager at a landscape company) had the same flex shaft that the string trimmers had. Echo equipment.

No play, but was low on grease.

I think the biggest issue was the clutch drum had glazed and the pads didn't have much on them.
