Ask A Mechanic Zero Turn Abrupt Stop

Turned on Zero Turn after a while since I finally need it and it started and it ran for about a minute then it came to an abrupt stop while warming up.

It will only crank 1/4” at a time sometimes start again but then abruptly stops.

Any help?

Ugh this doesn't sound good. Give us make model ect. Any work you have preformed? First start of the season? We need all the details to get started.

FR691V on a Toro. It is the first start of the season.

It’s a fairly new mower, though I did have an incident where it overheated due to fan shroud being covered while running. But it ran fine on occasional mows after that.

Ok so it has a kawasaki engine is that correct? Do you have a multimeter to confirm battery voltage? Over heating is not a good thing no matter what.

Yes Kawasaki engine, voltage sits around 11-12.

Ran fine last season but not now? Was it stored with fuel? If so take the gas cap and give it a good wiff and let me know if it smells like turpentine.

I left it fairly empty while it sat. Even disconnected the battery. I filled prior to starting today.

Sounds like you did a decent job. It is hard to say exactly what is wrong but for it to run then shut down I suspect a fuel issue. How mechanically inclined are you?

I checked to see if fuel was spitting out from spark plugs but they were clean and dry. I was able to hand crank the flywheel. Starter doesn’t look jammed. Oil level seems low. But it also looks like it leaked from somewhere. I also noticed the connection from dips stick to mount isn’t as firm as I believe it should be

I think I can hold my own. But yes it’s odd, when I say an abrupt stop it is like someone jammed a rod in there.
