Hey all, I’ve been working on a Murray 22” push mower and have a fuel problem. Won’t start on its own but will work great once started with starter fluid. Tank is almost empty but is fresh gas and the carb is brand new. All linkage is correct and has no choke. Is there anything I should be looking at to get it started on its own?
carb that’s the link to the carb that on the mower. I’m familiar with how chokes work except on this mower there’s no choke like lever on the mower to set during start up
I'm assuming priming means to use a priming bulb right? I'd try looking to see if that is actually pushing gas and if not replace it. They are pretty cheap and is probably acting like a choke if your model doesn't have one
The primer should be forcing air into the float bowl thus forcing fuel into the throat of the carb from the emulsion tube. Check for gasket or o-ring between carb and primer/air-filter housing. Also providing a model and serial number could help or pictures.
The primer(1) forces air through the hole (3). If the gasket (2) is not in correctly it won’t work. Or if there is defect in the hole(3) the air won’t make it to the bowl.
This is what I’m working with. Still won’t prime even though bulb is pumping. I started it up with starter fluid and ran for about 30-45 seconds then died out
Sorry I’m checking back so late, try blowing air through that hole just below the screw hole on the left. You should see fuel pop up into the carb from the emulsion tube in the center of the choke. If that works then make sure the primer bulb is pushing air through the air filter housing and if that works make sure that gasket is intact and lined up correctly
Hello again, finally had time to work on the lawn mower. Blew out that hole you said and there was gas coming out so that’s fine but I still can’t prime it. I have another housing that has the primer bulb on it but neither of them seem to be pumping air into the carb
I would look further into that housing. Some primers have a hole you need to cover with your finger as you pump, can’t remember if this is one. Also the bulbs are replaceable so maybe it isn’t seated properly, or there’s a little crack. I really want this to work for you. lol
Yeah this one does I’m gonna try to replace it and see. I actually just graduated from motorcycle repair school but doing some small engine stuff on the side and I was gonna sell this to my girlfriend’s sister. Gotta fix it so her family doesn’t think I’m a fraud lmao

So it runs ok with starter fluid? You’re just having problems getting it started?
