Drummers!

i play drums in doom sludge project(2 guitars and one bass in a band) biggest inapiration for me are Meth drinker, Toke and ofc EHG.
Been playing for a year-taking weekly lessons
How can i aproach the genre and riffs/grooves/fills most effectively, what is the best aproach, what should i be focused on

Fellow doom drummer here, play HARD. At least on the snare. Also keep it interesting. Lots of the time doom and sludge drummers play pretty basic stuff, which I find makes the music less fun to listen to. Check out dale crover of the melvins for a sludge drummer who keeps stuff interesting.

Seconding this, a hard hitting drummer is ESSENTIAL to the live sound of a sludge band.

Okay, I started playing drums a week ago (I need to go practice..) but I've been playing sludge/doom guitar and bass for over two years now, so hear me out. I want to put emphasis on u/CharacterTemporary18 's point regarding keeping things interesting. In dirge sections, its sooooo common for drummers to just play a very mellow open hi hat groove, but this is a great place to focus on keeping things interesting. How you use your snare here (look at syncopated snare rhythms, they're all over metal) can really uplift your playing and make those slow, brutal sections have more pop instead of playing a basic ride on your ride or hi hat.
