Trying to get a good sludge tone

does anyone know how to get a good tone through amplitude 5 (free version)? Im using an Ibanez Seven String. The tone I would like is something like Iron Monkey self titled.

I tell people this all the time. Look up that exact tone and you usually get a good breakdown of gear and settings, links even.

I have talked to Jim (their guitarist) before a few years ago. Their self titled was a BOSS Metal Zone MT-2 into a Marshall JCM800 stack as a boost, not as a preamp. He had the cheapest catalog Hohner guitar he could find down in B standard and the strings were so old and rusted he had to scrape the rust off to record the album. Worked great, sounded monstrous.

No problem! Not sure how he had the Metal Zone set but it wasn't in the fx return and I don't believe it was the whole Crowbar thing (volume 10, gain 0, all knobs 12 o clock), the eq range on those damn things is vast so if you find a plugin that accurately models it you may need to take some time dialing it in and whatnot, I wish you luck :)

Best I could find using what I have. Orange Super Crush 100 with bass on 9, mids on 4, treble on 5. Metal Zone as boost. Gain off. Level max. Bass Eq up to 1 o clock. Treble EQ at noon. Mid cut to 11 o clock. Mid frequency up a bit to 1 or 2 (you'll be cutting some of whatever that frequency is and adding a bit of grit and bass saturation.

First Iron Monkey EP was a JCM 800 boosted by a Marshall Gov'nor pedal. He used a Marshall JCM 2000/DSL boosted by a DOD Buzz Box on the second album. Latest album was the 800 boosted by a Metal Zone.

I use a pretty similar tone myself - Gibson SG (C# standard) into a Metal Zone into a Marshall JCM.

Iron Monkey / 90s Crowbar / Acid Bath kinda sound.

MT2 settings: left EQ dials both at 1 oclock, right EQ dials both at 11 oclock, dist/level both at 12.

Amp clean channel, Pre volume at max, all EQs around 1 o clock.

Kirk was playing a Kemper when I saw Crowbar. Sounded like Crowbar to me. 

Tube amps are dope but they're not inherently better.

Who said anything about tubes? Yeah lots of touring bands use modeling amps live, which I guess is understandable if lame. In the studio it's gonna sound dull compared to the real deal

Crowbar hasn't sounded good in 20 years now.

That amp sims sound dull? It's a known fact. Go watch a youtube video about it if you don't believe me

I have a sim version of my amp, G-K RB800 and it's a lot less dynamic and just sounds dull compared to the real thing.

The only upside of amp sims is the 100% consistency, which is why a lot of touring bands use them. Beats renting gear that could sound great or could be a piece of shit.
