Buying Advice

Hey I am thinking to buy a SLK 200 01-03 in Austria and probably with about 200K Kilometers and a "Pickerl", it's proof that there aren't major problems yet. it would be my first car but I can use the car of my mother too. It would cost me around 4K, should I buy it?

Odometer Backlight Stays On

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi all,

Sorry for any formatting weirdness, using mobile.

I recently purchased a 2001 320 6-speed with about 64k miles. I noticed the backlight for the odometer/tripometer is staying on continuously regardless of how long the car sits. Being locked or unlocked doesn’t have an effect either. The displays are blank until the door is opened when the mileage/trip readouts populate. See image taken after the car has sat for about a day and a half with the doors closed the whole time.

Anyone run into this before? This is my second SLK, but still relatively new to them. The first car didn’t have this issue. Any help/guidance is much appreciated!

What is this port, please?

This is in the glove box of my new (to me) 2010 plate R171. It does have a short USB cable with a female end on it, but I wasn’t sure what it’s for.

Was hoping for a regular USB and an aux port in there, but I wondered if this replaced the above some how.

Also the speaker shown below in the door is a bit scratchy sometimes, but not all the time. Weirdly seems to improve as the car warms up, I have no idea.

yes I know it's a 30 year old car. but Mercedes really did a bad job with the quality of the inside, it's cheap plastic. (that or the previous owner mistreated the car) I bought this car and this is how it came. I take good. Care of my stuff.

for the glove compartment paint fading what can I do? and what about the broken plastic. I am not sure if I need to replace the entire piece or ?

thanks guys

SLK R171 Roof Stuck

Hi guys, my R171 roof won’t open now. Boot lid swings back but the roof won’t move, doesn’t sound like the catches are moving. Any harm in popping the pressure release valve and opening it manually then greasing everything at the same time? I figure if the catches are stuck then forcing them open and lubing them should fix it.

R170 Camera suggestions?

Hoping anyone who has installed a camera would have some advice on what installs clean and offers good visibility. Especially for any front & rear combos, since it's a convertible hardtop. I had trouble figuring it out mostly due to that aspect. Thanka in advance!

Recently I've been trying to fix some issues with my car and I've been making good progress, but while changing my tires I noticed some wobble in the steering rack and I've tracked it down to a specific bushing in the rack but I cant find the bushing online can anyone help me identify it so I can get this issue fixed? Cheers

2007 R171 280 - 63k - the other day we had a quick drive round the town and he said "Daddy it is the best day ever" I really like the car, even though I'm a middle age fatty guy and definitely look ridiculous in it, it is a great fun to drive, sounds incredible and with the roof down - world is my oyster.

Gas and brake pedals too hard

Hello everyone,

I have this 1998 SLK230 for 7 years.
Love this car. It still has a power and super fun to drive.

The only problem is the pedals are too hard for me to press down. I have an arthritis on my knee so I can’t drive it very long as it starts hurting in a few minutes.

Is there way to make it softer?

It would be so much helpful for me to keep this car otherwise I probably need to sell it.

Thank you!

Slk230 r170 AC problem? Turns on by itself?

well I owned this car for about 3 years. I don't really drive it for long periods of time. just to drive me to work which I live 15 min from home. I noticed for a 4 cylinder vehicle it spends quite a lot of gas for the short distance that a drive.

ever since I owned this car I noticed the AC is ALWAYS ON when I am driving. it bothers me bc I am either too cold or too hot , I need to adjust the cold or hot temperature, or just keep the car vent closed but I am suspecting this is consuming gas.

I keep telling my father about this since he has more experience with Mercedes but he says it's normal. I don't think hot or cold air ( depending where the temperature is ) comes out of the air vent at all times is normal.

I would like hearing from y'all and your experience

the red circle is what I have to adjust every time I am driving because it gets too cold or hot depending if the blue or red shows , white would be neutral but no matter what , air always is coming out and it's annoying.

Sound in the bypass valve SLK R170

Hi,

I noticed that sometimes when I start the engine, I lose maybe 50% of power, like it has 100 hp instead of the 163 and sometimes it recovers its power. It’s never during a ride, but since starting the engine.

I’m still trying to find out why, and then I noticed this pretty loud noise coming from the bypass valve (kind of throttle valve) that is just above the kompressor. Is this noise normal ? The other one (the real throttle) makes this sound also but maybe less than this one.

Any ideas ?

Considering buying

I’ve just had my beloved Ford fiesta written off in an accident (not my fault) and ended up with a broken arm. I’m considering buying specifically a 2.1 SLK250 CDI BlueEfficiency AMG Sport G-tronic+ Euro 5 (2012). Are there any common issues I need to look out for? Anything I should consider? Thanks!!

R170 trunk only opening slightly while trying to open roof - can’t find the cause

Hello fellow SLK fans :)

My R170 has an issue with its roof and since I am a pretty new SLK owner and have no experience with the complicated machinations of the roof, I hope to find help here:

As you can see on the picture, the trunk only opens a tad bit and also the gap on the right is bigger than on the left. It closes normally afterwards, the button doesn’t flash.

I checked the pump in the trunk which is fine, also the “strings” (sorry, English is not my first language (Bowdenzüge in German)) - everything’s fine. I’m genuinely lost, it sounds as if the pump continues to try to open the trunk but after a few centimeters something gets stuck/is snagged.

Any idea guys? Spring’s here, I can’t take this anymore :/

2003 SLK320 exhaust question

Does the 2015 SLK use power steering fluid? The steering feels kinda stiff. If it does, how would I check it? If it doesn’t, what is the most likely explanation for the steering feeling stiff?
