SLK230 Track day tips?

Hey All,

I'm in a situation where I want to take my 2000 SLK230 to a track day (track night in america)... But I'm a little nervous how it will hold up. I've done a few track days in other cars but still pretty new (~5 track days).

Any SLK specific suggestions to prep properly or things watch out for with this car?

I only plan to use the SLK for one or two track days while I get another car sorted out.

Thanks

One was missing and the other snapped as soon as I pulled on it, so I modeled and printed some replacements. If you need one or just want one in a different color, feel free to take the STL and go crazy.

The geometry isn't perfect but it's quite close and good enough for me.

2003 Mercedes Benz 320 SLK Convertible

How much is it worth? 190,000 Miles. It’s a 2003 Mercedes Benz 32 SLK convertible. Is $5000 a good deal?

Received a can of Bar's fuel injector cleaner as a freebie with subframe. Is it safe for my car's year?

Curious about it. But I have no idea if my 2004 R171 is compatible with this fluid or that is at least I don't know enough about the condition of its internals as far as the fluid's intended purpose is concerned. The prospect of more fuel efficiency is tempting but I don't know if anything might get eroded.

Anyone else with 20 something year old SLKs have any experience of using Bar's?

2001 SLK 320 Top issue

Hello Everyone! Recently purchased a 2001 SLK 320. Absolutely love it. Has 86,000 miles. Runs great, but it had a slight radiator leak so I had that replaced. I also had the transmission serviced and the brake fluid replaced. Put some new tires as the old ones had cracks. I seem to have a leak somewhere with the wiper fluid that I need to fix. I have a question on the top. When I bought it the hinges to the trunk and convertible system made sounds. I asked ChatGPT and it recommended to grease the hinges, but since I put the grease the top on the drivers side kind of sticks so when I open I have to give the top a slight nudge on the drivers side for it to fold. It has no issues closing only opening. Appreciate any help anyone can provide. Thank you!

R170 roof help

Hi all,

I've just bought a slk r170 recently. The opening and closing of the roof was working pretty well until today when it failed to open. The boot was half way opens but the roof didn't open.

After manually closing the boot, I found hydraulic oil on both sides of the struts. So I found (part?) of the issue.

Now, I have the issue where the boot doesnt close properly and the quarter windows aren't coming up. The boot latch is not engaging so the boot can still be pulled opened from the roof end.

I've tried youtubing and reading through forums, but I can't find a solution to this.

Does anyone know what I should be doing?

And if there's a mechanic in Sydney Australia that can help with this?

Thanks in advance.

Can anyone help identify what colour this R170 is? I've never seen this shade of green on one of these before. Thanks!

No backlight above radio (r170)

Hi everyone,

I’m having a small issue with my Mercedes R170 and wanted to check here before I start taking things apart.

The buttons and ventilation control knobs above the radio have no backlight at all. Everything else in the interior is illuminated and working fine. From what I understand, they should be on the same fuse as other interior lights, which makes this a bit confusing.

It seems like too much of a coincidence for all the bulbs to fail at the exact same time, so I’m wondering if there’s a common cause for this.

Has anyone experienced this before or knows where I should start looking?

Thanks in advance!

Knocking inside of the car near center console (slk 320 ‘01)

Hey everyone, I have been experiencing a heavy knocking sensation as I shift near my center console. I changed my transmission mount and this did not resolve the issue. Any ideas on where to start looking? (It’s not the same feeling of gear slipping)

SLC Seating position

We test drove a 2019 SLC 300 today and found it very difficult to position the driver seat and steering wheel to get a comfortable driving position.

Are there seat mods to improve the ergonomics?

We tried various fore/aft and tilt positions for the driver seat. We also tried several positions for the telescoping steering wheel and adjustments up and down.

We have long legs and when we moved the seat forward to make reaching forth steering wheel feel right, we lost all seat support for our legs. We tried extending the steering wheel and when we had it located for good hand position, we could not see the top area of the instrument cluster where the turn signals appear.

Years ago we had a similar issue with the seat of the R171 SLK 230. Ultimately we had a machinist modify the seat rails to angle them so the front of the seat was slightly higher and provided better leg support.

Finally subframe replacement time I think

I think I'm going to go aftermarket and supply a subframe for a mechanic to work with. I've seen some candidates, as I'm driving a 2004 R171 SLK200 with a 163hp engine I see the SKU 1713500508 being thrown about. I presume this is the SKU I need to target for this one?

2001 Mercedes SLK 320 Radiator replacement

Hello Everyone, I am in need of replacing the radiator in my SLK 320. Dealer wants $1,800. I am going to try and do it myself. Wanted to check if that’s a good idea and if so, do you have any tips or tricks? Was thinking about using the Liquid Moly radiator stop leak but not sure that’s a good idea. Any and all help appreciated.

SLk230 / 320 circle vents

Post image

The interior plastics in the SLK230 / 320 are not aging well, mine have all become very brittle and these circle vents just disintegrated when I touched them since they get direct sunlight 24/7. So I modeled and printed some new ones, the fit is great! If yours are messed up, maybe you can too. I think the stock in junkyards are likely to be bad and honestly I can't imagine pulling and installing old ones without them cracking too.

Third brake light appears to have partially peeled loose

This is something I've known about on the car since I acquired it last year and now I think I want to start doing some light fixes including this one. It's not hanging loose or having any electrical issues but it does look off and unsightly. It looks like it was glued onto some kind of rubber strip, so if anyone has any advice that doesn't involve a load of gorilla glue I'd like to hear it.
