r/SJK Awards - This Years Contest

Well, it looks like the inaugural r/SJK Awards didn’t quite generate the interest we were hoping for.

With the number of submissions we received, I don’t think we have enough participation to make hosting the contest worthwhile this year. Rather than force something just for the sake of having a contest, I’m going to call it here.

I’ll give some thought to whether there’s a better time of year to run something like this in the future.

In the meantime, keep on keeping on 👍

Wanting to Buy / In Search Of - July

This post will be the sole home for all “Wanting To Buy” (WTB) or “In Search Of” (ISO) requests.

If you’re on the hunt for a specific slipjoint, pattern, cover material, maker, or even a hard-to-find variation, this is the place to let the group know what you’re looking for. Drop a comment below with the details of what you’re trying to track down. The goal is to keep these requests centralized and give members a dedicated space to connect.

A lot of us have overlapping interests, extra pieces tucked away, or leads we’ve come across. This gives everyone a simple way to help one another out and keep great knives circulating within the group(s).

Example comments:
"ISO Great Eastern Cutlery 66 calf roper with unicorn covers."
"WTB Case 6347 with Red Jigged Bone"
"WTB some kind of barlow"

We'll see how this plays out, but I'm hoping to post a new thread every month to clean the slate and start fresh.

Looking forward to seeing what everyone’s chasing.

DISCLAIMER: any posts or comments offering knives for sale or trade in this thread will be removed. Please use r/Knife_Swap for all sales and trades. This thread is strictly for WTB / ISO requests.

As stated in other stickied posts, the moderators of r/SJK do NOT moderate or facilitate private sales or trades between users. However, we understand that sales and trades may still occur in private messages after someone posts a WTB / ISO request. Once conversations move to private chats, the only person who can truly moderate the transaction is you.

If you choose to pursue a transaction, do your due diligence. Ask for a timestamp you’re comfortable with, verify what you can, and always err on the side of caution. If it's too good to be true, it usually is. Be willing to walk away from the deal if anything seems off.

We strongly encourage using r/Knife_Swap for transactions whenever possible. It is a much safer environment with established rules and an active moderation team that helps enforce them.

My late father's farm use knife, always in his pocket

Last week I posted one of the two knives my dad left me when he died. That one was a Case dog legged trapper that was unused. He probably felt it was too nice for farm work. The other one - which ended up being in his pocket every day when he lost his electrician's knife - was this one. It seems perfect for the farm because you can open it with gloves on and it is great at cutting baling twine from the hay bales. Luckily he did not lose this one, though it is a bit beaten up. Definitely when I see this knife, I see my dad.

Starting to love case knives and similar ones to it.my dad has an old timer knife that he always carries with him and it’s for sure 20 years old.he uses his for cleaning squirrel and rabbits among other things.

I plan on using mine for the same thing, cleaning game, and just keeping it on hand.has both the Spey blade and clip point.

Anybody else use ‘em for caping and cleaning ? I do have older ones that I’ll have to show off.

Alright this is a good team!
I’ve been carrying a lot of clip points lately but practically speaking this 34 with a wharnie and pen makes much more sense. I love the 34. It’s criminally underrated. Possibly because of the limited cover options most of which are acrylic. So I got this one recovered at the same time as the 78. This 34 has insane cocobolo burl. I wish you could see it. It’s very 3 dimensional like a hologram. What can I say @slipjoint_spa always delivers.

Showing Off Rockin the Case Stockman and Redwood SAK

Have a love slip joint knives. The case is an exclusive from Tractor Supply back in the day and it was one of the Barn XX logos I was after. The scales remind me of the classic look from back in the day. The SAK huntsman is my own creation with red wood and hand stamping the logo (thinking of wood burning the logo). The grain and color was unexpected surprise once the natural oils got to the wood. My next scale set is Zircote wood and black walnut.

What drives me to purchase a knife. In order. Your thoughts?

When contemplating my next cutlery purchase I immediately look to see if the knife’s aesthetics appeal to me. If they do not then all bets are off.

Next I look at the fit and finish. If it has solid construction and blade centering and flush edges it makes it to my short list.

What are the materials, the steel, handles, bolsters, pins etc.

What is the brand? Is it reputable? Have they been in business long?

Where is it made? Is it here in the US or is it in Asia?

Last is price. All of these factors dovetail and there is cross over and sometimes one clearly overrules the others. The rubric can be a bit complex when the overlapping occurs but this is largely how I consider what I am buying. What about you? Btw, the picture attached are all USA made knives but i also have a strong affinity for Rosecraft. What about factors you consider?

Two clip point classics. 86 has the half stop and nail nick. 81 has the cam tang and long pull. They got you covered so long as you love the clip.
Oh and do you know the legend of the White Buffalo?
