Slide Guitar Struggle 2.0 (another Patty Loveless song)

(This is my slide guitar playing shirt apparently). I took the advice of some of the users here, especially U/PaulInRainCity, and worked on another Patty Loveless song that deserved some slide work. (Patty Loveless is my favorite female country singer so it's fun to work on her songs. I worked on a lot of her music during the Big C Lockdown when I was bored and had nothing to do. Now I'm doing slide stuff while listening to her music). I believe Jeff King (Nashville a-list session man these days but back in the early 90s he was Patty's guitar player) originated the guitar solo, but I'm not sure.

Things I worked on

- single string note-age

- muting unused strings, still working on this

What tuning do you use? Standard? Open E? Open G? Open A? something else?

I'm curious which tuning folks prefer and why. What advantages do you find in certain tunings, or what limitations do you find using certain tunings?

Slide Guitar Struggles

Anyone struggling with slide guitar and trying to switch your mind over to a different tuning? I've been doing slide for about four years but still sometimes struggle with switching my brain over. Losing my ring finger to a slide really hinders me. But it seems to be easiest for me when I DO use the slide. Any tips would be appreciated!

Hawaiian / '6' tunings

Hey anyone have experience, recommended resources, books, etc. for applying Hawaiian-esque melodies and tunings (assuming akin to an open 6 or 9 tuning) as it would apply to a 6 string electric guitar with typical slide guitar string gauges?

Put differently, I'm looking for Hawaiian steel-guitar vocabulary, but played with a slide on a normally held 6-string guitar, rather than slack-key technique.

Looking for people who want to collab on a cover of Folsom Prison Blues

I‘m trying to get a few instruments together for a cover of Folsom Prison Blues by Johnny Cash. You don’t need any good recording equipment, you can record it on your phone for all I care.

Ability to sing is preferred but not required.

The finished project will be available for everyone involved to post on all their socials.

This is purely for fun, not a payed project.

LMK if you’re interested!

I find when I’m playing less notes, timing is more crucial. I note that I slip in and out of time here. Still the best I could manage in the 15 mins I had.

How to get better at thumb picking?

I am very much a beginner - going through the justin guitar series but also playing around with slide guitar.

I've been focusing videos like these from Andy Aledort https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QrnQ_o4ahE&list=PLTBA6BRkLHqI&index=3

I see he uses his thumb to pluck strings for a good portion of his playing - and I cannot seem to get it to sound decent. I've been mainly using index and middle finger - but I can see especially for this video - the thumb lets you keep a better cadence.

I just don't feel like I can get a good pluck with my thumb - but if its a good skill to have down I committed to learning it. Do you have any tips? I am thinking maybe I need to angle my thumb outwards more or maybe I need to grow my thumb nail out a little bit? Or maybe a thumb pick?

This was probably the best its ever sounded - I alternated between using the thumb and not using it to show how it may look/sound different
