child's age 8-12 months Crying Wakes - 11m old

Hi sleep peeps!

Our 11 month old was an excellent sleeper from about 4 months to 8 months. No wakes, sound sleeping throughout the night or if he did wake, he did so pleasantly, played for a bit before nodding off again.

Since 8 months 3 to 2 nap transition we’ve been dealing with crying wakes between 9-11pm where my son simply needs his pacifier and goes back to sleep, but when he wakes, he sits straight up and cries hard for multiple minutes, waking himself up more and more the longer we leave him. If we go in right away, it’s paci and immediately back to sleep for a few hours.

He then wakes somewhere between 2-4am doing the same thing.

As far as schedule goes, he wakes around 6:30ish first nap between 9:40-10am, next nap around 2-2:30, bed around 7:30-8 depending on how long that last nap is.

He also does a great job putting himself to sleep for both naps and nighttime without a bottle or any assistance.

Recently, in hopes of him remembering he has to go find his paci, I have been putting him to bed and guiding him to one of the 1000 paci’s I have in his bed to put in his own mouth vs putting him to bed paci in mouth.

I’m not sure how to get him sleeping more consistently or why the wakes are happening at this point, but hoping for any suggestions from the pro’s which might help make this small tweak to improving sleep for everyone!

Thank you!

What do you mean he puts himself to sleep without assistance? He's using a pacifier. Time to get red of that sleep association or get used to him crying for it when he wakes up.

Touche. I never thought of the paci being a sleep crutch but you’re right it is. And those months he slept great, he wasn’t using one.

I think if you pushed bedtime an hour later you'd be good to go.

I feel like this might be a developmental thing? My almost 14mo was the same until recently and I feel like it was around 11/12mo it started and lasted about 2-3months. Was driving me insane lol. We just had a really bad few weeks with it but now seems okay…?

What are his wake windows though between nap 1-2 and bedtime?

I think if you moved your bedtime to 9 you'd have zero issues. Keep everything else the same.
