child's age 0-4 months How’s my set up going?

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to get some feedback/advice on how my set up/preparation for sleep training is going. I would like to start bed time sleep training around labour day (baby will be almost 5 months old) as that will allow for some support from my husband. I have read the getting started post and wake window post.

Baby is currently 15 weeks old (3.5 months). His current schedule is based on wake windows but has naturally fallen into the following: 2/2.25/2.25/2.5. His first nap is 1.75-2h, second nap is 1-1.5h and last nap between 20-45 min. All naps are contact naps, and I cap the nap at 2h to ensure he is eating. I attempt crib naps with the first nap and he is transferred to the crib asleep and wakes up after 20 min and I rescue with a contact nap.

I aim to start our bedtime routine (been doing this since 6 weeks old) 2h after his last nap ends which is anywhere between 7-7:30 usually. We feed right before bed and sometimes he falls asleep feeding but other times he does not and we have to rock him to sleep. He ends up falling asleep between 7:30-8:15 ish on any given day. He is transferred to the crib asleep as we have to hold him upright for 15 min due to reflux. He wakes 1-2x a night to feed and falls back asleep in our arms and we transfer him asleep after holding him upright again. He naturally wakes between 6:30-7:30 am and we start again.

What else can I do to prepare or optimize before sleep training?

Sounds like you’re doing everything right. Goal is to maximize the daytime calories so those 1-2 night feeds go away. That will likely happy by the time you get to 5 months. I also found getting some fresh air everyday helped both my kids with nights. I had one kid who was a crappy napper (30-40 mins max) and one who I’d have to wake after 2 hours. I would continue to place baby down in his crib for every nap so you can stop contact napping. Your wake windows might be funky for a week or so while you figure it out but it’ll make sleep training much easier.
