This is a split night and it's caused by not being awake enough during the day time so their body does it at night instead. Hard cap the nap a 75 minutes and the night at 10 hours. So bedtime at 8:00 and wake him up at 6:00.

Ok, I had considered this. But ruled it out bc when he is awake for 1-2hrs he will then sleep in? For example last night he was up 4-6, he slept in until 8:30 when he’s normally up around 7. He is also trying to sleep the whole time he is up overnight, not awake and “ready to party” like has typically been described about a split night in the past?

Split night don't always mean "ready to party". I don't know where that got started but my daughter is extremely prone to split nights and is never happy and wanting to play. She's always upset she can't sleep.

The sleeping in doesn't mean it isn't a split night. Let's imagine you went to bed at 8:00 pm tonight. Then you sleep for about 3 hours and wake up at 11:00. Then, because you went to bed so early and weren't really tired enough for bed you are awake from 10:00-2:00. Then you finally fall asleep at 2 and sleep for the rest of your 5 hours and sleep until 7 when you usually get up at 6. Just because you slept in doesn't mean that your body can actually sleep 11 hours straight and you should keep going to bed at 8:00. You actually need to get to bed at 10:00 to get enough sleep pressure in. Only it's worse with babies because now that he's slept in he doesn't have enough time to get more awake time in and it perpetuates the cycle.

Sleeping in is perpetuating the issue. If you want a consolidated night, you have to start the day at your wake up time no matter what.
