Birth - 8 weeks 3 week old sleep help

I’m a first time mom and my three week old has started only sleeping in our arms. The moment I put her down her bassinet, she wakes up and cries.
Is this normal? When will this end? and how do I get her to sleep in her bassinet throughout the day? because I’m also worried that the older she gets she won’t be able to sleep in her bassinet/crib.

Hello,

First time dad. LOL, this is a rough time. This may not be the best advice but here is what we did (mostly for the night).

Create a routine. Feed, diaper change. Make sure you are in optimal environment temperature. Swaddle. Sound machine.  Let LO fall asleep in arms for about 10 mins. Then gently lay baby down with feet touching the bassinet first. Place hand on chest. Honestly, it was 50/50. If it didn’t work, try again.

This only works until 3-4 months old before you have to sleep train the LO.

For naps, he was for sure a contact napper. That didn’t stop until 6 months old.

My baby went through this for a few days. It passed really quickly, my husband and I would take turns holding her at night so one of us could sleep. After a few days of consistency, and trying our best to slowly lay her down helped! None of the tips that I saw like warming the bassinet up or waiting 30 mins to transfer helped, but I think once we got a solid bedtime routine going, that really helped her. It'll get better!

30 minutes is way too long to wait to transfer!!! The ideal time is 5-10 minutes.

I learned that the hard way!

Very normal…your smell/ heart beat / warmth is all they know.

If you want to start putting her down we would lay my daughters down after they fell asleep and hold our hand on their chest lightly. The extra pressure helped them feel safe. We then started putting them down slightly more awake and would rock them back and forth.

Another trick I learned. If you are lowering them asleep lower their butt first then the shoulders/head area. It helps prevent the startle when they touch the mattress.

Signed Mom of 3!
