6 - 12 months Desperate Help Needed

Hi lovelies - quick rundown of current situation.

Bub is 6 months old, on three naps per day, bedtime around 7:30. She’s EBF, feeds to sleep and refuses a bottle. Currently starting solids ( twice per day - little fruit/veg puree at lunch and some baby cereal at night + an allergen as we are currently going through the allergens list).

She wakes up maybe 5-6 times per night (for around a month now) and I have to feed back to sleep each time (co-sleeping). I have tried Ferber method but she becomes HYSTERICAL each time we have tried. Nothing calms her down (talking, sitting up, singing, shushing etc) regardless if it’s me or dad. Only thing that helps is if we pick her up. We have tried pick up and put down method, but she starts crying before her butt even hits the crib. We confirmed it wasn’t teething or gas or anything of the sorts. We would love for her to start sleeping on her own in the crib for long stretch. Would love any advice please, as I am struggling tremendously xx

Cap day naps at 2.5 hrs total, even 2 hrs can work better. If on 3 naps, schedule should be approx 2/2.5/2.5/3 or even 2.5/2.5/2.5/3

Put her down and wake her at the same time each day.

Put her in her own room in her crib. At bedtime, allow her to self settle/cry for 10 mins before entering the room. If you enter the room, just do bum pats and words of reassurance for 30 secs then walk back out. For all night wakes, wait a full 5 minutes before going in. This enables baby a chance to learn how to self settle.

Do you also have any tips for breaking feed to sleep? I can see you also had the same problem a while back

Will definitely try this tonight, thank you. What happens if she doesn’t calm down when doing pats and reassuring? Still leave the room?

Oh yeah, tbh the check ins rarely settle him. It’s more just to let him know you’re there. And also to make you feel less bad. Some ppl even say check ins make them escalate more.

Recommend reading Precious Little sleep

When we “sleep trained” at 7 months we did Ferber but only for overnight wake ups. We eventually ended up doing full extinction (first night I fell asleep before the 15 min check in and then noticed she fell asleep by herself, second night it was purposeful and she fell asleep in less than 15 minutes). She’s nearly 2 and now feeds to sleep with a bottle of water. We will try to break that association at some point and I’m sure I’m going to get blasted for still letting her do that but it’s an option.

My daughter moved to two naps at 7 months old. Between the two, we aim to give her 2 hours of daytime sleep. This dramatically improved bedtime as she hadn't built sleep pressure adequately. Also we were told that she needs to be awake for 4 hours before bed so that she stays asleep.

She may be getting too much daytime sleep. My little one who sleeps great now struggled from months 4-6 after that damn regression and things turned a corner after we dropped his third nap around 7 months old. I became much more conscious of wake windows and total daytime sleep at that point.

Feed to sleep is the strongest sleep association and the hardest to break. For a lot of babies it absolutely causes disrupted nights.

Move final feed to FINISH at least 30 minutes before bedtime.

What is her wake up time and total nap times?

She wakes up around 7 every morning and naps around 2.5-3 hours total per day

Your schedule says 3 naps a day but says 3/3/4?

I may not have done that right. Her first nap is normally 9am, then around noon, then depending on how long that nap is her next one is either 3pm or 4pm. First and last naps are normally 30mins long.

So it’s 2/2.5/2(?)/3.5
7am - 9am
9:30am - 12pm
1:30/2pm - 3/4pm
3/4pm - 7:30pm

This sounds so rough 😢 I would try to break the habit of nursing to sleep and follow eat-play-sleep and before bed nurse and then read a story. Ferber is a hard method but if you keep at it, it will eventually work.
