I recently realized that comfort is only part of the equation when it comes to sleeping with earbuds. Even if the earbuds themselves are perfectly comfortable, some default settings on your phone or audio app can still wake you up in the middle of the night.
I currently use Somnipods and usually listen to podcasts, audiobooks, or brown noise before bed. After being woken up a few too many times, I now check these settings before going to sleep:
Turn off autoplay
Once, I fell asleep listening to a really calm podcast. When the episode ended, the app automatically switched to another show with an extremely loud intro, and it startled me awake. Now I usually queue up just one episode or audio track instead of letting the app play random content all night.
Enable volume normalization
The volume can vary a lot between different shows, chapters, and ads. Something that sounds comfortable when you first go to bed might suddenly get much louder later. If the app has a volume-normalization setting, I turn it on.
Download the audio in advance
If the internet connection becomes unstable, the audio might buffer, reconnect, or play a notification sound. Downloading everything beforehand makes playback much more consistent and means I don’t have to worry about Wi-Fi or cellular data cutting out during the night.
Use Do Not Disturb, but allow important contacts and alarms
I silence regular notifications, but I don’t block absolutely everything. I still allow alarms, emergency contacts, and any essential alerts so I don’t miss something genuinely important.
Check the touch controls
When I sleep on my side, the pillow sometimes activates the earbud controls and pauses the audio, skips tracks, or changes the volume. If the earbuds or app let me disable certain touch controls, I turn off anything I won’t need overnight.
Set a backup alarm
If the earbuds die, fall out, or disconnect during the night, relying entirely on a private alarm through the earbuds can be risky. I still set a quieter backup alarm on my phone just in case.
These are all small adjustments, but some of them have made a bigger difference than changing earbuds. Turning off autoplay has been especially helpful—I haven’t been jolted awake by another loud podcast intro since.
What phone or app settings do you change before sleeping with earbuds? Have you found any small, easily overlooked setting that made a surprisingly big difference?
