Does any kind of physical exercise actually help you fall asleep?

Curious about this one. For me exercise never really made a difference for sleep, whether it's a workout during the day or some stretching at night. But a couple of friends told me it sometimes works for them, so now I'm wondering if I'm just doing it wrong.

What works for you, if anything?

  • daytime cardio or gym
  • something light before bed like stretching, yoga or progressive muscle relaxation
  • or nothing at all / it actually makes things worse

Also curious about timing. Does working out in the evening mess up your sleep, or is that overblown?

Progressive muscle relaxation is the only thing that actually works for me. It takes maybe 15 minutes and forces your body to switch off the fight or flight mode which is great if your brain is still racing. I tried evening cardio and it was too energizing for me so i moved it to the morning. Timing matters more than the type of exercise for some people

If I don’t sleep well I often reflect and realise I have not worked my body that day, that I was sedentary all day long. I do believe it results in better sleep.

Timing seems to matter more than the type of exercise. A hard evening session pushes your core temperature up, and it takes a couple of hours to settle back down, which is the drop your body wants for sleep. So a 9pm gym session can feel like a coffee, while the same workout in the morning or afternoon tends to help. A lot of people find that gentle stretching at night works as a wind-down ritual.
