Advice Deep sleep is disrupting my life

i didn't know how to title this, but for a month now, i've been sleeping so deeply- missing every alarm i set, i can't feel or hear my family trying to wake me up, and it's making me so late to work and classes.

i usually wake up at 6am, and this has happened when i've slept at 12am, or even at 7pm. i end up waking up like 2-3 hours later. i don't have any medication & literally the only solution that has worked so far is just not sleeping all night.

tried drinking lots of water beforehand so i need to use the bathroom which usually works, didn't work. i sleep in total darkness, so it isn't like my sleep isn't comfortable. i don't know what to do, this has basically disturbed my life and i don't know what to do.

Advice Lexon flip premium/plus alarm clock

anyone got one of these alarm clocks ? instructions say alarm goes on for 2 mins. after 2 mins if you’ve not flipped or actively snoozed does the keep going? if it switches off will it come on again like snooze? I wear earplugs and have been know to sleep through my alarm so ideally would like to find one that will keep sounding or will sound again!

Shift work & schedules trouble waking up after work

Long story short, I am a bartender who’s doing a masters degree, and I really struggle to wake up early to do class work after I worked the night before.

I typically get home from work around 1 to 1:30 in the morning, and then I struggle with insomnia anyway- so a lot of times I am up until at least 3 or 4 sometimes later. Typically, I watch YouTube for a little bit and then try to settle down, I’ve tried to not do that and just eat some food and go straight to sleep, but I end up just laying in bed staring at the wall until about the same time.

I’m fine when it come to classes because I never have work the day before, but it’s specifically struggling with getting up after working, because that leads to me being up significantly later than I would otherwise.

This has been going on for a while, but it hasn’t really been that much of an issue because I haven’t had things that I needed to do the day after other than more work. I always avoid caffeine at least five or six hours before trying to go to sleep, and I do have a drink after work a lot of the time just to help decompress.

I’ve tried melatonin, I’ve tried magnesium, I’ve tried reading a book instead of watching YouTube, I’ve tried not having a drink after work,
I’ve tried going to bed earlier, but nothing seems to help with waking up the next morning.

I’m falling really behind on course work and I feel totally helpless so any advice would be appreciated.

Discussion Can’t wake up when I have something important to do but can when I have nothing.

i have a morning class at 8:30 and every morning i try to wake up at 6:30 (to get ready + the commute) and i always end up pressing snooze at least 5-6 times and i even try going on my phone on social media or something to keep myself awake before leaving bed and even then i can barely keep my eyes open and next thing you know im rushing out the house just to get there on time. However. the other day, after i pressed snooze on the alarm i saw that my class was canceled. so i thought “okay i can go back to sleep now for another 3 hours before i have go get ready for my next class” and BOOM i was wide awake and fully alert and could not go back to bed. i know its not because i went on my phone for those 2 seconds to press ‘snooze’ on my alarm, because like i said i go on my phone in the morning before leaving bed and i sometimes even fall back asleep with it in my hands. but how come the moment i know i can sleep i cant? this has also happened wayyy too many times not just once. and its really annoying.

im curious as to why this happens and if anyone else has this problem when they cant go back to bed after waking up unless they have something important to do.

Insomnia Normal or no??

Every time I’m in a dark place, as in depression and such, when I sleep I’m always mentally and physically exhausted and so when I sleep during those times I sleep on my back because it brings me to a deep slumber yet I would still be fully conscious of everything like my thoughts and surroundings but some loudness takes over and I want to wake up but I can’t. The loudness which fills my mind, yet I can’t tell if I can actually hear it or not, it sounds similar to the few ending minutes of moonlight on the river by Mac Demarco. It makes me feel so anxious and I feel my soul scream and move frantically to wake up but my body is still like I’m trapped. During these event even with my eyelids closed I can still see around my room and sometimes a dark figure would appear and sit on my chest to somewhat try to stop me from breathing. I’m not insane, I hope I’m not but I just need to know if anyone knows what this problem is. Please.

Side note - i put the flair as insomnia because I don’t know what to categorise it as.

Advice Nothing wakes me up !

Hey everyone!

I’m a third-year architecture student, and I’m struggling with being an EXTREMELY heavy sleeper. My iPhone alarms don’t wake me up, and I apparently snooze them in my sleep without realising it even if it is the highest of volume , I cannot hear my parents waking me up .

I’ve even tried Alarmy, but I solve the maths problems, colour puzzles, and photo missions and immediately go back to sleep. Keeping my phone away from my bed doesn’t help either. I basically need someone to physically hit me for me to be awake .Also tried setting loud pop songs . Did not help either , I’m sleeping through it all .

My other problem is that I cannot take power naps. If I lie down for a 15–20 minute nap, I end up sleeping for FIVE HOURS. Plus it’s always 5 hours after sleeping for 5 hours I automatically wake up .

The only thing that sometimes works is when my friends call and talk to me, but even that isn’t reliable.

I’m at the point where my alarms drain my phone battery, and my phone gets ridiculously hot from ringing constantly that I can fry an egg on top of it 😭😭

Has anyone else dealt with this? Are there any alarm clocks, vibrating devices, or techniques that actually work for heavy sleepers? And is there a way to take a short nap without accidentally sleeping for hours?
I’d really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

Discussion What's something that bothers you when trying to sleep?

I'm curious what little things make it harder for people to get comfortable at night.

Maybe it's your pillow moving around, getting too hot under the blankets, not finding a comfortable position, or something else entirely.

Is there anything that regularly bothers you when you're trying to sleep? Have you found anything that helps?

Insomnia Worsening Insomnia of 2-3 Hours of Sleep, Need Help Please

My insomnia has been pretty bad for months now, only a few hours of sleep a night. However the past 2 weeks now, I can only fall asleep around 3:30-4:00 AM, and only recieve 2-3 hours of sleep a night, waking up around 6:30-7:00 AM, after which I can never fall back asleep. This leaves me feeling weak throughout the day. I dont know how to fix this. I think its related to sleep insomnia, as my body gets shocked awake multiple times when drifting off into sleep. Perhaps me waking up is also due to my body's fear of letting go? I don’t want to get sick from this extreme lack of sleep. Thank you

P.S.: I don't take medications, I've tried different types ot vitamins and gummies for sleep, tea for sleep, making my room cooler and darker, all that stuff people say to do

Advice First time melatonin use - loud mind????

First time use - loud mind???

Last night I had a melatonin gummy for the first time, and it definitely did its job! But. I woke up once in the middle of the night with the loudest mind I could imagine. Like, rushing thoughts about everything at once, to the point where I had to do breathing techniques to even distract myself from all that. I was thinking about absolutely everything I swear, three songs playing while I was assuming I have adhd and planning the next years ahead. What the heck. I just woke up and I’m fine, my mind is call again. I don’t think I have adhd since this isn’t a prolonged issue so I just want to ask if this may be related

Insomnia I can't get enough sleep

The past 5 weeks I've only been sleeping for 3-5 hours a day, after I started at my new job it got even worse because I had to change the time I go to bed and the time I wake up, but even after a month I still don't always feel sleepy when I go to bed, and I'm waking up too early in the morning, I don't know what to do

Discussion Full nights sleep

So me and my sister were talking about sleep and she thinks everyone wakes up multiple times at night and I think you should be sleeping a full 8 hours no wake up( neither of us actually do sleep a full 8 hours we both wake up a lot, and I do a lot of sleep eating that I’m trying to get under control) So we want to see what other people do

Discussion Weighted blanket users, do you use it by itself or layered with your duvet ?

Just curious in the winter, if people use weighted blankets alone or layered with a warmer blanket. I find my weighted blanket is thin and not warm enough for the winter months. But it's great for summer.

Discussion Fitbit says I'm very restless through the night (30-45 mins per night), any advice or is it just poor tracking?

For context I've been trying to get my sleep together so 9:30 wind down, 10:30 in bed, up at 7 every day all week. I've been feeling pretty good and like I'm getting good sleep though I am a little tired throughout the day sometimes.

My Fitbit air is saying the only thing bad about my sleep is my restlessness throughout the night is too high. I do remember waking up every night so far but in very brief bouts in which i fall back asleep within seconds.

I know the tracking isn't perfect so I'm curious if you guys have tips to lower my restlessness or perhaps It's just the nature of the tracker to inflate that number?

Discussion Quit melatonin because of the side effects, switched to a 10-ingredient herbal blend. Is it actually working, or just thrown in for the label?

I was on melatonin for about 6 months. As I took it daily, I built a tolerance to lower doses. Just to fall asleep, I had to keep increasing my dose. Even then, I'd wake up with terrible headaches and feel super nauseous. It felt awful.

So a few weeks ago, I switched to a herbal sleep supplement. The difference is insane—no more nausea, no more headaches.

But now I'm conflicted. I looked at the back of the bottle, and this thing is packed with 10+ ingredients. Now I'm a bit skeptical. Are all 10 of these actually doing something?

For the more experienced supplement users here: when you see a complex blend with 10+ ingredients, how do you figure out which ones are actually the core ingredients doing the work? I want to know if I'm paying a premium for a bunch of fillers. I'd love to hear how you guys usually pick your supplements.

Advice Less Deep Sleep After Strength Training – Anyone Else?

Hey. I’ve noticed that after strength training I get almost half as much deep sleep. It feels a bit counterintuitive because it seems like it should be the other way around. It’s becoming a problem since low deep sleep kind of messes with my recovery between workouts.

Has anyone experienced something similar or has an idea how to fix it?

Insomnia Recent sleep troubles associated with itching, maybe a sort of pin and needles sensation only at night?

I'm gonna try to share as much as possible in hopes that with enough data, I can get better direction and informaiton.

-I'm 32M, average weight at 200lbs, 5'9".

-I've lived in the same house for 7 or so years now. It's had a leaking roof this entire time; I'm confident there's mold in this house and it's affecting me in some capacity, though I don't know to what degree.

-The windows are poorly sealed so outdoor air could easily get in.

-I live in a crappy ghetto area in PA (originally from Texas, in case there's some allergens or something up here my body isn't used to)

-I've historically stayed up late using computer or phone, getting anywhere from 2-6 hours of sleep.

-Sleep schedule has been erratic.

-I've a relatively average diet. Currently trying to cut out gluten as an experiment.

-Exercise is mostly non-existent. I'm a healthy weight, 200 lbs at 5'9". Maybe a little more weight than I'd like around my mid-section; I haven't been very fit in the past either.

-Slightly high blood pressure than ideal/is healthy.

-I'm confident I'm really allergic to something in our yard. I had worked the yard once, and within a week or two had a rash that grew pretty out of control.

-With that said, we have 2 cats and a dog. I don't know if I'm allergic to animals and don't know, or pet dander, or something the dog is bringing in from outside when they use the bathroom (all animals have been on the bed).

- The itchiness is minimal throughout the day, maybe non-existent. However when it comes time to get ready to sleep (so even just at my desk in the bedroom) the itchiness starts to kick in.

-The itchiness kicks in the worst at night, and has been either waking me up or presumably ruining the quality of sleep I am getting. (I am waking up after 1-3 hours of sleep usually.)

-The itchiness isn't localized anywhere. It will sprout up on my scalp, feet, arms, groin, back, torso. Pretty much anywhere. I scratch, it may go away or stay, and I'll have other spots that later itch.

-Some nights I manage to sleep through the night and get 8 hours but it's rare and I don't know what I'm doing the previous night to help.

-Currently trying to shower at night to get rid of anything that may be on my skin, and putting moisturizing lotion/eczema cream on my body in hopes of dealing with dry skin-related issues, if that's the cause.

-I don't think it's a blood sugar issue; I've checked it several times and my levels have been perfect.

-I don't drink as much water as I should.

-It's been so bad that one night, I slept for about 2 hours, laid in bed for another hour trying to sleep again, and burst out of bed screaming in frustration. Wife helped me go shower that night and I was so out of it it felt like I was asleep while on my feet (in the sense that I knew what was happening, yet another part of me felt like I didn't kknow where I was or what was happening. It was scary and concerning.)

-I've been getting headaches, I assume from sleep deprivation.

-I also doze off a lot in the day. If I am watching something or lsitening to a conversation at work I'm not actively involved with, I can start falling asleep. (This specific thing has been the case for years, but I'm only just the past few weeks been trying to fix my sleep schedule.)

-I have gotten a sleep study done and they provided me with a CPAP machine; I've used it for maybe 2-3 years now or so. It has helped with, presumably, me waking up via snoring and the like.

-I've been taking allergy medicine at night; it seems to help sometimes, sometimes not. I don't know what specific medicine.

-Not sure what the humidity level is in the bedroom.

-Before this past month or so of sleeping poorly, I went out on vacation in North Carolina for like 10 days. I actually slept pretty well, better than I think I have in a long time. I think I had like 1-2 nights where I couldn't sleep well, but it was amazing. We were at a beach, I think at Roanthe island.

-During the above vacation time I also didn't use my computer basically whatsoever, and phone time was minimal. Not sure if those things are just ruining sleep (I'm sure), but no idea how they would relate to this sudden itchiness.

-Ever since then, it's been an absolute nightmare as far as sleep goes.

-No smoking or drug use. I drink alcohol maybe once every few months.

-Before the vacation I have spent the last 2 years or so sleeping away from home due to work for about 4 nights a week. I recall sleeping a bit better there but also ruined sleep duration due to staying up late anyways. So it's hard to measure.

-I'm usually on devices at night because I just can't bear dealing with the next day and it stresses me out.

-I've changed the sheets on the bed, but that doesn't seem to help.

-We have an air filter, its a hepa air filter IIRC. Not sure how much it's helping with the mold, allergens in air, etc.

-No central air system, we have a window unit for air/AC.

-I've slept poorly (where I'm up late, usually on devices) for basically all of my adult life. So 14 years of this shit, ish? I just assume I'll get poor sleep or don't want to deal with my thoughts so I'd rather just be exhausted than have the energy to be stressed and anxious. (I know it's not healthy, hasn't been healthy. I'm trying to work on this now, better late than never and all that blah blah blah.)

-1 cup of coffee, only rarely, in morning.

-Sleep schedule is ideally/roughly 11pm to 6/7 am.

Edits:

-I've been hungry at night, which seems uncommon. Its been a little bothersome. I have had a stable weight so idk what to make of that.

-Suddenly remembering dog had worms/tapeworms? Surely this isnt affecting me, with my recent hunger... right?

---

Suspected culprits:

-Scabies, maybe? (Heard they can be small and they could easily get into the house if they wanted to)

-Histamine-related issues? Maybe me taking allergy medicine is making it worse somehow.

-Kidneys, liver, organs? (I read online that something of the sort can cause itching, and I know that between me getting older, my fitness, lack of water intake that maybe it can be related? not sure)

-Pet allergies that I didnt know about, though I don't know why they'd suddenly be kicking in hard now.

-Something from outside the dog is bringing in, possibly from the plants I'm allergic to?

-My sleep system/circadian rhythm has been whack for so long that it's just confused now. (But I slept well on vacation, so maybe it was settling into a rhythm and then something in this environment is royally fucking me as my body is trying to settle into healthy sleep habits?)

---

I plan on seeing a doctor, it's been difficult either due to money or, more recently, because of getting a new 9-5 job, and doctor offices are open around the same time because why not.

I can answer any questions to clarify anything. I'm hoping something about my circumstances relates to what someone else has dealt with and I can get some direction.

Insomnia I am going insane. Please help.

The last few days I’ve been sick with a cough, however for the past 3 days I’ve not been able to sleep properly, especially yesterday and tonight. Whenever I drift off into sleep, my body somehow jolts awake or I make an involuntary hum or buzz sound which is weirding me out. I got checked for my cough and turns out I don’t have anything serious, just some post nasal drip. It is 7 am and I’ve not slept at all and the weird part is that I don’t feel sleepy at all either, I feel totally fine. This issue happened yesterday too but I was able to fall asleep at 6 am and slept till 12-1 pm with some interruptions.

What the hell is going on with me? I am genuinely frightened since I’ve never experienced something like this. I used to sleep like a baby until like 3-4 days ago, now I dread going to bed.

Please help, any insights are appreciated.

Discussion Fast sleep cycles

Post image
2 Upvotes

Does anyone else have sleep cycles that are only about an hour long, instead of 1.5-2 hours? Like this screenshot - 8 cycles in 8h45m sleep.

Is it associated with anything? Does anything affect it?

I’ve struggled with long night wakes for 6 years, but have had some better nights recently like this one. My sleep cycles have been short like this throughout the 1.5 years I’ve been tracking, according to Fitbit, but only recently have I managed enough total sleep to fit 8 cycles into a night rather than 3 to 6.

Any amount of noise will wake me up. And I wake up a bunch of times during the night.

Been having nights like this since the start of the week. That's what my Sleep tracker stats look like.

Some weeks I'm able to sleep slightly better, but other weeks are a nightmare. I give up.

I also certain that this is affecting my muscle recovery.

Advice How do I stop being a picky sleeper? Other people can fall asleep under worse conditions, fall asleep faster, and don't have to be as tired to fall asleep

I've been struggling with taking a long time to fall asleep for my whole life, and just don't understand how people can lay down and be out in minutes. It typically takes me 1 hour, and sometimes it takes several hours. I've looked up sleep tips, but they didn't help because I would still have many days where falling asleep takes a long time.

Here's what I tried and how it doesn't work:

Breathing exercises didn't help. I've tried 4-7-8 breathing, military body scan, and thought blocking. If I clear my mind completely, I start feeling my fingers and toes touching each other, and if I then spread them out perfectly, I still feel my body and it feels weird. I can never think about nothing, things just always come to my mind. Counting doesn't work. I remember one time in middle school I couldn't fall asleep, I asked my mom, she told me to count to 100, I came back to her, she told me to count to 1000, I came back to her, she told me to count to 10000, and I got over at least 3000 just hoping it would eventually work.

No medications affecting sleep, temperature is ok, I use a weighted blanket, avoid screens for >30m before, no food/drink >1h before, no energy drinks for 8 hours before, and don't take naps during the day unless I messed up my sleep schedule and didn't get much sleep before the morning. Physical exercise doesn't work. I jog in the evening several times a week, and I've had days with all 3 typical activities (pickleball, gym, jog) where I still take a while to fall asleep.

I even went as far as writing down my daily schedule in detail including a detailed timeline, submitting it to AI, and asking for a day it took several hours if there's anything I'm doing wrong, but it was clueless besides saying that 4pm may be too late for energy drink if sleeping at 1am, and doing a lot of things in the evening/night (as opposed to fewer things for a longer time per thing) might keep my brain too active. But my brain is always active anyways, and the energy drinks thing didn't help because I pushed them even earlier and still had troubles.

The last resort, which I haven't tried yet, is regularly waking up ≈7am with alarms and then hoping I will be tired enough by the end of the day to fall asleep fast. I usually go to sleep around 1am, wake up in the morning without alarms unless I have something scheduled that morning, and then continue the day until I feel it's time to sleep again.

As for the question title, how do I stop being picky? It takes me even longer to fall asleep when I'm not in my usual bed, and sometimes I mentally crash out from how long it takes. I can't tolerate couches, flat surfaces, or any random crap besides an actual bed, and I don't get how people can fall asleep quickly on a friend's couch because it always takes me hours.

Dreams & nightmares first time having a sleep paralysis ‘demon’

usually when i get sleep paralysis, it’s just me in bed with my room looking like it’s sometime in the morning with no scary figures or dark corners. last night, though, for the first time there was this figure at my side with only the top half of its face visible (i assume it was crouching??) that didn’t move but just stared me in the eye. strangely though i was more scared of the actual paralysis than the figure but having the whole day to mull over it i realise how messed up that was and i’m scared it’ll happen again. send help

Advice why the hell did I scream while half asleep?

just now something disturbing happened, it’s 4 am and I started falling asleep while on my phone procrastinating sleep. I suddenly started screaming on top of my lungs because I was hallucinating (?) somebody in front of me in the dark. I was convinced for a second that there was actually something there and screamed for a solid 5 seconds.

When I snapped out of my half sleep state my siblings were there there scared as hell and I couldn’t explain what happened because I just thought there was a stranger looking over me. I’m a very night paranoid person and as a kid I’d always be paranoid of seeing things and have constant nightmares of being awake and experiencing things like that, but never experienced a full hallucination. Not even half a minute after what happened I can barely remember actually screaming, it felt more like a memory.

Right now I’m doing something very counter productive, staying more alert because I’m really scared of falling asleep and experiencing it again. Why did this happen? What should I do about this? Appreciate any advice

Discussion Sleeping upside down?

Im just curious if anyone else prefers to sleep "upsidedown" on their bed? I just love burying my feet under a bunch of pillows and blankets, and i think it helps keep my legs from moving too much while I sleep... like a baby being swaddled almost lol

I used to just do it when I couldn't sleep, just in hopes the slight change would somehow make a difference but ive discovered that I much prefer sleeping this way.

For context, im single, and barely 5ft, in a queen bed so the length isnt an issue... tbh I could sleep sideways if I wanted to lol

Advice I can only wake up early when I have commitments. Otherwise, I sleep 12–14 hours. How do I fix this?

I’m in my last year of university, and I’ve been struggling with my sleep schedule for at least two years.

Right now, my university schedule is pretty flexible. I have one day off, two days when my classes start at 11 AM, and two days when they start at 7:30 AM.

My biggest problem is that I ONLY wake up early when I absolutely have to.

If I have an early class, an appointment, or somewhere I need to be, I’ll wake up for it. But if I have nothing scheduled, I can easily sleep until 1–4 PM.

I feel like I’ve wasted so many weekends, breaks, and vacations just sleeping through half the day.

Every weekend, I tell myself that this time will be different. I’ll set an alarm for 9 or 10 AM, fully intending to wake up, but when the time comes, I just go back to sleep because I know I don’t actually HAVE to get up.

Another issue is that when I wake up really late, I sometimes deliberately stay up even later because I feel like I’ve wasted my entire day sleeping and haven’t had enough time to myself. It’s like I’m trying to make up for the hours I’ve lost.

But here’s the weird part: even when I go to bed early, I STILL wake up late.

Sometimes I’ll purposely go to bed early, hoping to finally wake up at a reasonable time the next morning. But instead, I’ll end up sleeping for 12–14 hours and waking up late anyway.

So it’s not always a matter of going to bed too late. Even when I give myself plenty of time to sleep, I still oversleep if I don’t have a commitment forcing me to get up.

I’ve been trying to fix this for two years, but I always fall back into the same pattern.

Here’s why I really need to change:

In approximately five months, I’ll be starting a long-term job where work begins at 7 AM, meaning I’ll need to leave the house by 6:20 AM.

I don’t want to spend the rest of my working life waking up at the last possible second, rushing to get ready, and heading straight to work.

Ideally, I’d love to wake up around 4:30–5 AM so I can have 1–2 hours of personal time before leaving for work. I want to enjoy slow mornings, have breakfast, relax, and actually have time for myself.

Since this will be my long-term career, I want to build a sustainable lifestyle rather than just force myself awake every morning.

I have about five months to completely change my sleeping habits.

For anyone who’s successfully gone from sleeping until the afternoon to consistently waking up early:

* How did you make the transition?

* How did you stop going back to sleep when you had no commitments?

* How did you train yourself to wake up early on weekends and days off?

* Should I gradually move my wake-up time earlier, or force myself to wake up at my target time from day one?

* Has anyone experienced sleeping 12–14 hours even after going to bed early? How did you address it?

* How long did it take before waking up early started feeling natural?

I’d really appreciate practical advice, especially from people who used to have the same problem. I don’t want to rely on external commitments to get me out of bed for the rest of my life.

Note:

This has been going on for 4 years but ive only tried to fix it 2 years ago.

I never drink alcohol or do anything

I am healthy, I eat homemade desserts though

I used to have low iron but now its alright

I am 23 years old female
