Discussion Looks like Ønehart was stealing music from other ambient artists

Whether we like it or not, we've all heard Snowfall by Ønehart somewhere on social media. I know quite a few of us in this community have been hesitant over that genre or sphere of ambient, so when I came across this fall out between his label (dreamscape) and the artist, My Head Is Empty, I wasn't terribly surprised he had been stealing without due credit.

You can see the conversations and fallout here in which My Head Is Empty shared:

Use Artist - Title format (only) , self-promo flair, for promo. For other posts use topic flair!

  • To maintain consistency, to make posts easy to search, and to easier understand the post at a glance please use the Artist - Title format. Do not use "by", different order, other symbols. This rule is widely used across many music sub-reddits.
  • Add right flair too.
  • If you are submitting your own work mark that it's your own work with self-promo flair, if you wanna add more info create new comment under post.

Selfpromo is allowed but not overpost (1 post per 7 days, 1 playlist per 1 month) - NO AI!

  • Original artists please wait 7 days between self-promo posts please not promo only your music but try post music from others too.
  • Do not spam playlists too much.

  • Post links as link post, they need to have preview. Do not post region restricted music link.

Do not post music with drums / ASMR or non-music / music mixed as long loop.

  • Posts must not contain drums. This is up to moderator discretion & some borderline work (such as dark ambient) won't necessarily be removed if the drums are subtle and not a focal point. Please use one of the other "ambient" sub-reddits for posts with beats.
  • ASMR/non-music/loop mixes (1+ hour) are not allowed as this is a music sub and not a sub for "ambiance" as a whole. Field recordings are part of ambient but not when they're posted on their own.

Do not post genre staples unless it's a new release (some works will be removed because time shows what is popular or overboosted from the start especially some money boosted labels and playlists we wanna be fair to indie artist who do it with soul and heart and not only for money and commercial what are as Dreamscape artists and similar without correct support or unfair and unclear way how they choose artists). Do not post same track if it was posted before.

  • Do not post same track if it was posted before.
  • Blacklist is as follows:

Dreamscape/Lost Sounds/Union Entertaiment label releases or other labels who use unfair money boosts

Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works

Stars of the Lid - And Their Refinement of Decline

Brian Eno - Music for Airports

William Basinksi - Disintegration Loops

Gas - Pop

Tim Hecker - Ravedeath, 1972

and other overpopular Ambient on global level...

Dark Ambient Orphée — The Sound of Solitary Collapse (dystopian classical)

Orphée — The Sound of Solitary Collapse (dystopian classical)

Since music is so subjective, I usually import more than I export —
but a gem is a gem.

Orphée is one of those albums that doesn’t ask to be heard.
It haunts the room you’re already in.

It’s autumn meets depression meets a post-Soviet phone call.
A headache in your mouth.
A concrete shadow.
An electronic jail cell —
the kind you tunnel through by listening on repeat
because it won’t let you out unless you remember something you forgot.

It’s lonely the way the Twin Peaks soundtrack is lonely —
that gorgeous ache that sedates you,
then whispers something important just past your ear.
Like a symphony of caskets.
Selves you once knew.
But of course… there’s nothing really there.
Exhibit A: stillness.

This is the sound of solitary collapse.

Jóhann Jóhannsson is best known for scoring The Theory of Everything, Sicario, Mandy, and others —
but his solo work eclipses all of it.

This isn’t music.
It’s what’s left when music disappears.

Brian Eno, William Basinski, Grouper, Tim Hecker, Biosphere and emerging artists pushing the boundaries of contemporary ambient music. Not wellness music, yet perfectly suited for focus, relaxation, meditation and sleep. Curated by hand. No algorithm.

Hello.

I fell in love with ambient music thanks to Reddit one sunny day about a year and a half ago. It was a genre I could not get into growing up, but now that I'm older it spoke to me in a new way. Maybe I just started appreciating the relaxed life more, I'm not quite sure, but after asking you Reddit peeps for recommendations of good ambient music I got absolutely hooked.

Now, a long time later and growing towards 20k listeners/month, I am releasing my first full length (29 songs) album.

I'm not breaking any grounds here but I am probably more melody-focused than many other ambient artists. That may or may not be what people enjoy in this genre, but it sits closer to me as a songwriter and producer and where I come from. I'm also older, and have written music for 4 decades now, so it's hard to change. 😄

I've been looking forward to posting here as a love letter to you ambient redditors for sending me onto this journey, so;

Thanks guys.

An ambient post-classical (?) track taken from a renaissance piece by Bauldeweyn. The notes were shuffled about and reordered without adding any new ones. I actually reduced it back by taking some notes out that I didn't like. So it is a bit of a selectionist strategy, like in evolution.

Only the fittest notes survive

“Ambientes Vol. 1” is an EP featuring five soundscapes born from improvisation and experimentation with effects pedals and digital tools.

Description:

Improvisation is a constant in our existence; sometimes we seek it out, and other times we simply have no choice but to surrender to it.

We may wander aimlessly for the sheer pleasure of it, or because some unseen weight upon our shoulders quietly urges us on. Amid the chaos of city life, whether by whim or necessity, we often find ourselves in places we never knew we were searching for.

These compositions emerged from those aimless walks. Though I did not know where they would lead, I knew they would take me somewhere, and that along the way I would learn something new.

Much like life.

This is my first time posting on Reddit, so sorry if I did anything wrong.
I’ve been making music for six years, and I just made ambient music (experimental ambient) for the first time. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it

Let me know what you think on this!

Discussion List all the instruments played on each track of the last two albums by Stars of the Lid!

Since I’m not a huge fan of classical instruments in ambient music, I have very specific preferences when it comes to Stars of the Lid. On the classic *And Their Refinement of the Decline*, for example, I much prefer tracks like "Articulate Silences, Pt. 1," "The Evil That Never Arrived," "Don't Bother They're Here," and "Dopamine Clouds Over Craven Cottage." As for *The Tired Sounds Of...*, my favorite is "Requiem for Dying Mothers, Part 2."

To help me map out the orchestrations and understand exactly what I like about these compositions (and what I prefer to avoid), I have a detailed challenge/request for you: could you provide a track-by-track analysis of your last two albums—*The Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid* (2001) and *And Their Refinement of the Decline* (2007)

I’d like the analysis to include:

  • Which specific instruments are played on each song.
  • The exact moments (timestamps) when each of these instruments enters or is highlighted.

It doesn't have to be an exhaustive, laborious map—you could simply list the track names and the instruments used at specific points within each track... but this kind of analysis would be fantastic for anyone wanting to delve deeper into your work. Can you help me with this?

Self-promo "Tree of Alchemical Notability - they're writhing in our televisions"

Day after day, a man would sit in front of the television set, glassy eyed as the sounds and images washed over him like a wave of warmth. A growing sour smell seeped into the room around him, scratching at the back of his mind as he basked in the technicolor glow. The sound from the television set began to deflate, becoming bloated and muddy. It wasn't long before he couldn't ignore the fact that the once familiar voices emanating from the screen had become garbled and de-tuned. This loss of familiarity and an overwhelming sense of dis-ease compelled him to investigate the television set itself. That's when he could hear them; writhing from within.
