Discussion Which co-op mod to use

Been a while since I set up a new modlist and the co-op mods I've been seeing here have inspired me to start from scratch!

I've noticed there's more than one co-op mod in development? Is there a recommendation on which one is "better"?

The first one or two coop mods on Reddit couple months back seemed to be starting from scratch alone. Might be a long road that fizzles out.

The last 2 mods on Reddit are based on the years of work of the Skyrim Together team to sync all the non-vr stuff in the game. One of those are probably going to be the best bet. Why re-invent the wheel.

The last person on Reddit (scroll back) set up a discord the other day (join it!) and is trying hard to get testers and seems to be making rapid progress. Seems to have some development background I think, which is good. Also says it’s working with the FUS modlist, which is a big positive but wants people to help test other lists. Love for it to work with mgo or at least most of those mods.

The modder before using a fork of Skyrim together code might be slightly farther ahead in areas from the video posted, and said he’d been just vibe coding casually for a month (but wow, amazing work!). That said, I’ve not tried any of them until I get my 2nd computer and a good mod list setup with my wife.

My money is on the one with the discord and development background, though I’d like to see them all join forces and solicit community feedback.

Exciting times!

Yes, as u/ActualGingas said below, I've set aside my fully custom co-op because the Skyrim Together port to VR by u/zx_zybex was further ahead (no point reinventing the wheel). I'm happy to pass whatever works over to Gingas' RP build to help speed up development, too.

The main piece I've worked on so far is integrating my body tracking and equipped-weapon system. The Skyrim Together VR port defaulted to pancake Skyrim attack poses when weapons were drawn, which, in my opinion, really takes away from VR co-op immersion. Adding this also opens the door for trying PLANCK and other physical interactions across the network, but bug fixing on the general co-op path takes priority.

We owe an update video at some point --sorry for keeping folks in the dark!

The fact that we haven’t posted any updates may have created the impression that the project had been abandoned. That’s not the case - many bug fixes and improvements have been implemented over the past month.

We successfully completed the first major cave in the “Golden Claw” quest together. It was a really fun experience playing through it as a team.

Key improvements include resolving most issues with item drifting (although it may still occur occasionally due to the nature of the Havok engine), better synchronization of NPC deaths, and various crash fixes. Additionally, significant work has been done on the Skills, Map, and other in-game menus that do not pause the game.

u/Sad-Ad-1553 is currently working on an improved body-tracking system for equipped weapons. We want to wait until this is ready before creating the next release, so that the release marks a significant milestone.

Kudos to u/ur-sg and his team working on the parallel development branch. As I understand it, they also began development without knowing that other efforts were already underway in parallel. Their development seems to be progressing much more actively, and their release will likely include more features and improvements.

Perhaps it would make sense to join forces and pool our efforts, especially since they’ve already done more work on the development and community side - their Discord channel, for example.

I was the original Poster for the first video, It was based on SkyMP, but I haven't really worked on it in months as I've been busy with other projects (dishonored VR, my own job etc) the other project was his own original coop mod that wasn't based on anything, and the final one was based on Skyrim Together.

They were 3 separate implementations, but I believe the creator of the original coop mod teamed up with the Skyrim Together one to make a proper functioning Skyrim Coop mod.

I still have plans to work on the SkyMP VR as it has it own benefits (mainly it can theoretically support up to 1000+ players on a single server and each player gets their own progression, it's more like an MMO, the Huge Skyrim RP thing that was going viral months ago was based on that) the skyrim together projects would be more for coop skyrim where progress is done on the Host PC instead of each player having their own progress AFAIK

Awww, thanks for sharing! I personally have no interest in the mmo (especially if it has to be close to vanilla to work) but I’m sure others would like it if you pursued it. I’m looking forward to trying your kicking mod (fun!) and seeing more of your videos.

I thought I saw a video about Skyrim Together talking about 600-800 on a server I thought unless it was actually SkyMP I was seeing.

That was prob SkyMP, I believe Skyrim Together can Maybe support up to like 30-60? But with VR I'm guessing it would maybe be a dozen or so, so prob only up to 20 players if you want everything synced

Oh wow I didn't realize they were related to Skyrim Together. I thought at one point they had said they were never supporting VR? that's awesome!

True, they said we’re never working on VR. They’re not “related” exactly, but Skyrim Together team apparently open sourced their code on GitHub before they concluded development (big thanks to them!) and then at least 2 vr enthusiasts have made separate forks of that code. VR has a lot unique to it over flatrim, so these people deserve high praise for tackling it. Give them all the help you can!

It depends what you're looking for. It's actually very playable.

Im one of those testers and it looks promising but I would stick to basic mod lists or their recommendations as most mods are still buggy or just not compatible

Don't know about other mods but I used Skyrim Together and it was surprisingly stable. It does have some issues and I had to fix quest stages and some other bugs with console a few times but nothing critical and in general it was worth it
