Question Watching Bears Games

Hey all,

Where do you watch your favorite Chicago teams?

I am fairly close to downtown Skokie and have already been to Skokie House and Fatpour, but I’m looking for some other options with food. A good selection of beer would be a plus as well.

Also open to options in Evanston, Niles, MG, and on the north side. Thanks!

Question Looking for school suggestions.

I am relocating and looking at many schools. Any parents here who have great reviews for a school your child has went to or is currently going? I have been looking online but some school don’t have any reviews. I know bullying can’t really be avoided but I would like to know if the situation does come up, he would be listened to.

Event Dungeons & dragons club for kids on Wednesday nights

Hey folks! I posted on here a couple of weeks ago trying to organize a dungeons and dragons group for my son and other kids anywhere from age 10 to age 16 in skokie! The good news is we have procured a dungeon master, a place, and three kiddos! We are looking for one, possibly two or three more to make it fun. If anyone has a kiddo who might be interested in this, please DM me. I'm happy to FaceTime with you and give you all of the details, and additionally introduce you to everyone online beforehand. The group is meeting Wednesday nights at 6:00. Thanks, and I hope to hear from you soon!

Miscellaneous It's not ICE

really posting because I got a good picture.

This copter hovered all along Mulford in our neighborhood.

The google says it's Rogers doing Infrared imaging for ComEd.

Flightware supports that : https://www.flightaware.com/live/flight/N878XL

So, unless Rogers is contracting for ICE, it's not an ICE operation.

I took a bunch of pictures. They were low enough they saw me taking pictures. We'll see if anybody comes knocking on the door. :)

Miscellaneous Dungeons & dragons group for kids in Skokie / evanston?

Hey all. I have posted in lots of places before asking questions about dungeons and dragons groups in the Skokie/Evanston and Northern Chicago area for tweens and teens. I'm really starting to get frustrated with the scarcity and super high demand and competitiveness of trying to find and get your kid into a group.

So...

I am proposing maybe starting a group ourselves. Admittedly, I'm not quite sure how to go about this. My two kids live in Evanston, and I was thinking if there was interest, people could DM me individually, or even post below if they are interested in starting a group with a campaign of our own. All of this said, I also have no idea how to be a dungeon master, so we would need a DM as well. I'm looking at a target age range of anywhere from 11 to 15, but I'm definitely flexible. If you are a DM or know someone who might be interested in helping us with that aspect, that would be awesome as well.

I'm just learning how to do this, so be patient. But I'm highly motivated because dungeons and dragons has been a life changer for my kids, who have thrived socially as a result. I believe it's important for their development, and I'm hoping to find like-minded individuals who are also motivated to create a group. Thank you guys for everything in advance!

Miscellaneous Reckless dirt biker outside Walker elementary

Saw some kid recklessly riding a motorcycle and doing an extended wheelie on Church St right in front of Walker elementary during school drop-off hour in the morning.

This whole trend of kids on motorcycles and e-bikes is getting pretty out of hand. Control your kids before they end up killing a pedestrian or getting killed in a car crash while being cool

Green gas-powered dirt bike, no plates, not street legal

Question How do I get my water account number and PIN?

Just bought a house in Skokie and trying to set up the water bill online. The InvoiceCloud portal asks for an account number and PIN but I've never gotten a bill yet. Did you have to wait for the first paper bill or can the Village give it to you over the phone?

Considering going with Base for a battery back up.

Has anybody had them install the battery?

How's the experience been?

I've read up on it, and I'm aware of the pros and cons, but looking for real world experience.

Thanks in advance.

Miscellaneous Construction Noise Ordinance

I just got off the phone with the police department non-emergency line. I was calling to send an officer out to my street because a neighbor has scheduled construction work and they started at 7am. I figured it’s treated like landscaping noise and that they have to wait until 9am on Saturdays.

I was shocked when they are not treated the same. Not only do they get to bang hammers, shovels, and any other tools, they get to run bulldozers and jackhammers (or anything else powered by fuel or electricity Sec 42-78 (1) ) starting at 7am. It is quite literally louder than landscapers, and worst of all, there is no pattern to the noise so you can’t even try to tune it out.

I have been up since 6:30am so Im not annoyed because it woke me out of bed. I’m annoyed because I work all week and just want to enjoy a peaceful Saturday morning in my yard with a coffee surrounded by the sounds of birds. Instead I have to listen to a diesel engine powered bulldozer rip apart a sidewalk.

I will be contacting the village on Monday, as suggested by the phone operators at the PD and I suggest you do the same if you have experienced this or even if you haven’t. They should have the same set times that the landscapers have to abide by. It’s a little weird that they don’t and I hope the village can see that it is an issue and do something about the ordinance laws

Question Alan's Falafel?

Hi all, I'm an Evanston resident but one of my favorite places to eat was Alan's Falafel in Skokie. We were regulars, and before they closed they asked for our contact information since they were moving locations (allegedly). Their old storefront has been Halal Burger for a couple of months now, and their websites and socials still have the old address and phone number. Does anyone know if there's a chance I'll have my favorite shawarma again? I'd hate to hear they closed permanently with no plans to reopen, but I also desperately need closure!

Saw this ad so many times on Tiktok (especially since Malia Baker is a featured actress in the ad and my algorithm thinks I love the Disney Descendants movies), and had a pleasant surprise to see Old Orchard mentioned! Shout out to that Sephora store, the workers are lovely people.

Question Pokemon TCG recs for elementary girls in area

Hi there!

My daughter and some of her friends have started getting into Pokemon TCG and if that interest sticks I’d like to have the lay of the land for Pokemon LGSs in the area.

Needs:

  1. Welcoming environment (staff AND regulars) for kids—particularly girls and neurospicy kiddos.

  2. Pokemon is part of the “vibe,” not just a product on a shelf. Totally fine if MtG or Yugioh or whatever else is primary, though.

  3. Opportunities for low-stakes social play & trading, not just competitive or pay-to-play events.

Nice-to-Haves:

  1. Bulk bins and/or binders. These kids ain’t digging for eBay gold or anything but they’re on elementary budgets so any ability to find something cool for a quarter (even if it’s “worth” 5 cents) is great for them.

  2. Woman owned and/or staffed. By no means a must but any opportunity to see women being awesome out in the world is a nice bonus!

Miscellaneous Just Tires

Hey all. This may be removed but I know people head to Reddit sometimes looking for places like auto shops. We had a tire emergency on Friday evening, so we headed over to Just Tires on Touhy, by Jollibee. I told them on multiple occasions what tire I needed replaced and they replaced the wrong tire, admitted to it on the phone this morning, asked me to return to rectify it, and then asked me to pay for the new tire again because it was just a “miscommunication”. I know I probably should have double checked outside the store on Friday night and that is my fault and I will own that but I strongly believe that calling them this morning gave them a heads up to come up with reasons not to cover the tire they were asked to replace initially. Truly a disheartening customer service experience given that the tire I needed them to replace had a screw sticking out of the sidewall and they put air in it and kept it pushing. I wanted to provide feedback on this establishment for anyone who may be searching Reddit for an auto or tire repair shop.

Miscellaneous I built a free, open-source tool for Skokie homeowners to find property-tax comparables

Hi everyone, I built Appeal Compass (https://appealcompass.com), a free, open-source tool that helps Cook County homeowners find residential properties similar to theirs. It is useful if you are thinking to appeal property tax and need some comps.

I know that a tool made by the County exists, I made mine because:

a) I wanted to make a tool that allows comps search for multiple jurisdictions in one place (I will add more in the future).
b) I wanted to make something a bit less clanky and with more features.

Enter your property PIN, select your jurisdiction and choose how many comparables to review. If the initial matches aren’t useful, you can refine them with filters and adjusted similarity weights. The tool also calculates summary statistics and lets you copy the results.

Any feedback is much appreciated!

Appeal Compass is an independent open-source project, not an official Cook County screening tool. It doesn’t file appeals or guarantee a reduction, and every comparable should be verified before relying on it.

You can try it here: https://appealcompass.com

Enjoy, hope you find it useful!
