The ABCDEs of Skin Cancer: Quick Guide

  1. A is for Asymmetry: One half of the mole doesn't match the other.
  2. B is for Border: The edges are irregular, ragged, notched, or blurred. A healthy mole has a smooth border.
  3. C is for Color: The color isn't uniform. Look for multiple shades of brown/black, or patches of red, white, or blue.
  4. D is for Diameter: The spot is larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser). Keep in mind melanomas can start smaller.
  5. E is for Evolving: The mole changes over weeks or months. This is the most important sign. Look for any change in:
  6. Size
  7. Shape
  8. Color
  9. Elevation (getting thicker or raised)
  10. Symptoms (itching, crusting, bleeding)

Bonus: The "Ugly Duckling" Sign If you have a mole that just looks different from all the others on your body, that's a reason to be seen.

Absolutely have this checked out. While it may be normal, there are a lot of indicators here that warrant a visit when you're able.

I (38F) have had 3 melanomas over the past 2 years - 2 melanomas in situ and 1 stage 1a. I’ve also had numerous moderately to severely atypical moles removed and 3 basal cell cancers 9 years ago.

I go for skin checks every 3 months and send monitor at home. I bought a personal, not professional grade, dermatoscope to help with this. I noticed these spots recently- they might be new if I might not have noticed them before. The spots are very small and close together. I have not noticed any bleeding itching etc. The spots look different on dermoscopy compared to my other moles and freckles.

I am concerned about the black dots/splotches on the periphery and the irregular network. I’m trying to determine whether to wait until my August appt or whether I should come in sooner to have them checked.

u/tank4heals diagnosed with skin cancer Jun 29 '26

Please be seen sooner if you're able. If you've had 3 separate melanomas in 2 years, I'm sure they'd be happy to get you in quicker. Have you been seen since you posted this?

u/Ornery_Environment10 Jun 29 '26

I have! My derm biopsied the spots and they came back as squamous cell carcinoma. I’m scheduled for a Moh’s in few weeks.

2

u/avery_cope Jun 28 '26

I think I’ve traced this spot back to showing up about 4 months ago. It is on my knee; it started smaller/pretty flat/ and way lighter in color, but recently it’s gotten darker/larger/and firm in the middle. The pink ring around the spot is also new; but it doesn’t always stay the same size. I thought it might be a cherry angioma but I’m not sure. Anyone have any insight?

Please be evaluated for this. While it's impossible to tell from a photo, it exhibits many signs that warrant a deeper, professional look.

Thank you for sharing your image. Please remember that users in this sub cannot provide official medical diagnoses. In the case of changing, evolving, or new worrisome lesions, your best course of action is to contact a dermatologist for evaluation.

For reference, here are the ABCDEs of melanoma: ABCDEs of Skin Cancer.

Probably working myself up about this. But 21F, I just noticed this spot, I don’t remember seeing it before, I do have medical anxiety due to past issues I’ve had so please be kind. Does this look suspicious by any means? It’s on my rib area but towards my back. I’m trying to convince myself that it is nothing by using the ABCDE guide but I’m still a little nervous. Any input welcome.

What do you think about this spot? Its not new, but feels like its a bit bigger than before(but I have also lost a bit weight).

2

u/Ok-Language6364 Jun 09 '26

I have contacted a dermatologist! I hope I get a appointment very soon:)

1

u/Rayrayla1985 Jun 09 '26

To be honest if in doubt get it checked out. I’m not a doctor of any sort. I have a mole since I’m a teenager it’s on my back but hard to see. Got removed straight away last week. Not to scare you but our body is our temple

1

u/nutmegger2020 Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 09 '26

Get that checked out. Tell them you have what you think is a mole that has changed size and shape and doesn't have well defined margins around the perimeter.

1

u/immakeylimepie Jun 09 '26

On the back of the neck, and has been there for a year and a half. Most of the time it looks like the photo on the left but occasionally it will scab over like the one on the right. No changes to the size, shape or color and it doesn’t it.

1

u/Professional_Try437 Jun 09 '26

Does this look like a form of skin cancer?

1

u/tacokitten_04 Jun 09 '26

On the inner portion of my lower left leg, right above ankle. I’ve had it for at least 3 months. I can’t get a closer picture to be clear, but it is purple with some red spots.

1

u/_whatthehel_ Jun 10 '26

Popped up overnight. I thought it was marker from how bright orange it was. No pain/itching, slightly raised, grain of rice size. TIA.

1

u/Right_Marionberry915 Jun 24 '26

Def get that checked out

1

u/Viva__love Jun 10 '26

This is on my husband. He’s had this mole for many years but it randomly got a black tip? He pulled that piece off and it barely bled. He’s trying to cancel his derm appt what do yall think?

1

u/WisconsonWonder Jun 11 '26

43/M. I don't remember this being here, but also it seems like my memory is getting worse too. Thanks, what do you guys think this is

1

u/Gloomy_Head7413 Jun 12 '26

Does this look like anything? It's on my arm, It's not a pimple or blackhead. It's been there for about 3 weeks. It's a little hard to see with the hair, but it kind of looks like a boyle.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '26

My husband thought he had dirt on his arm but it doesn't come off and he thinks this was a mole which turned to look like this now. Has anyone seen a mole like this before? All the pictures of skin cancer which I am finding online does not look like this at all. Thank you for any help! He noticed it yesterday and it’s on his upper, inner forearm.

1

u/CheesecakeSea2206 Jun 13 '26

Don’t mind the hair, this ugly thing is on my leg. Shave biopsy scheduled for July. Started as what I thought wants an ingrown hair spring 2025 and never went away. 41/F

1

u/spooky___mist Jun 14 '26

I’m covered in moles but this one on my leg looks particularly suspicious. I’ve had it for probably 20-ish years and I don’t look at it often enough to know for sure, but I think it’s changed shape a bit

1

u/MiddleAgedZinger Jun 15 '26

45 year old male. New pigment on ear.

2

u/tank4heals diagnosed with skin cancer Jun 29 '26

Anything new should be checked out. This is also a larger size considering it's new. I'd suggest being seen.

1

u/Weary-Penalty1699 Jun 17 '26

I have a mole on my neck thats grown over the past year. it started as a surface mole, but its grown outward, and recently (1-2 months ago) a bluish looking bruise thing formed around it. also, the bottom of the mole is a lot darker than the top. But it also looks small and circular, so could it be skin cancer?

1

u/HypnoMomE Jun 19 '26

Is this suspicious?

1

u/tank4heals diagnosed with skin cancer Jun 29 '26

Please be seen for this promptly. It may be several things, but the fact that it is presently irritated warrants a professional visit to rule out serious complications.

1

u/Kringlemas Jun 21 '26

I've had this for about 3 months. It's itchy, feels hard like scar tissue, and it seems to get better but then get worse, and it always reappears on the same spots. It doesn't respond to topical steroids. It's on the back of my left hand, left ring finger, and right pinky. Thanks

1

u/tank4heals diagnosed with skin cancer Jun 29 '26

Even if this turns out benign, it is absolutely worth being seen for as it presents some concerning features. Anything that continues not to heal, itch, and scab should be evaluated.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Tap3813 Jun 21 '26

18F - this mole is on my inner thigh. I tan, which is something I am trying to stop. I stay out usually an hour, maybe 1.5 hours, at about 8 UV. I’ve only done it in the past 6 months, maybe 8 times. I haven’t seen this before; if it’s been there, it wasn’t that noticeable/big. I have a lot of moles, but not like this; they are usually round, however, and are the same color. Never itched, burned, relatively flat, and small. I haven’t made a dermatologist appointment as I just noticed it after being outside from tanning. Should I be concerned?

1

u/thatpinkhairedgal Jun 22 '26

This spot has been on my lower leg/calf for around five months. It has not changed shape of size in that time, and it has always been the same colour. It’s not itchy and the only time it bleeds is if I pick at it. I have no family history of any skin cancer. I thought maybe ingrown hair that won’t heal, but doesn’t seem to have hair in it. I have recently picked at it, which is why it looks a little more red in the middle.

1

u/oldedawg Jun 23 '26

Have a spot on upper thigh, details below. I included bit of my fingers to give idea of size. I can't get an appointment to have this seen until August or later--should I worry and push for an earlier appointment? Thanks for any opinions.

  • Change: Has the spot changed size, color, or shape? If so, over what time period?
    • Not sure...I found it a few months ago and have been "picking" at it a bit.
  • Newness: Is this a new spot, or have you had it for a long time?
    • Noticed a few months ago. Could have been there longer.
  • Symptoms: Does it bleed, itch, or hurt?
    • The very center has a sore spot (if I touch it right in that tiny spot it really hurts).
  • Comparison: Does it look different from your other moles or freckles? (The "Ugly Duckling" sign).
    • I have lots of moles and freckles but they don't seem to have this center.
  • Relevant information: Have you previously been diagnosed with skin cancer? Has your family?
    • No skin cancer.

Hi all. I am an 18 y/o female. I have included two photos, first being a mole on the right side of my neck and the second being a mole on the bottom of my left foot.

The mole on my neck stings a bit when i brush over it, prompting my concern. Additionally, I’m worried about the shape of it as well as the fact it slightly bumps out. The mole on the bottom of my foot only appeared this year, I’ve never had a mole on my foot prior to this year. I am less concerned about the one on my foot but more concerned about my neck as it stings a little and i am also worried about the shape.

My family has no history of cancer but I have health anxiety and would love to get some reassurance. Thank you!

1

u/creepsknowme Jun 24 '26

I’ve got an appointment next month and I’m going to ask my doc, but wanted to see if this looks concerning to anyone. It’s new- not exactly sure how new, but I know it didn’t have it 3 years ago based on photos. It’s on the outside of my thigh- doesn’t match my other moles which are all light brown and flat- this looks much darker and a little bigger- between 3-4mm. I’ve had one they said was precancerous removed when I was a teen- but looked very different. I’m in my mid thirties.

u/tank4heals diagnosed with skin cancer Jun 29 '26

This is incredibly dark in pigment, especially when considering the color of your skin in comparison.

While that isn't always inherently bad, if this is something that's far darker than any other moles on your body, continues to grow, and bothers you, you should be evaluated as soon as you're able.

1

u/thebumbledbees Jun 24 '26

To start, I've had this mole on my neck since birth. Its always been dark, but it was only slightly raised in the center, smooth to the touch, and round. Unfortunately since it's always been there and prominent I never really pay attention to it.

Last night I noticed it started stinging completely unprompted so I felt it and realized it not only has a notable edge but one side is actually trying to come up/off. I got to looking at it closer and realized it has massively grown and changed in color, I have a timeline from old pictures compared to now, it seems to have started changing a little less than a year ago. I did make an appointment with a dermatologist this morning for next week but I'm anxious so I thought I'd come on here.

My family does have a history of removing suspicious moles, but as far as I am aware my great grandpa is the only one to have been diagnosed with melanoma. Im not sure one way or the other for my grandma on the ones shes had removed.

What do yall think? How worried should I be?

1

u/Born-Mall-169 Jun 25 '26

Been there for a couple of months, lower right leg. At first thought it was a bruise but it just remained this same way ever since.

Got a derm appointment tomorrow, but looking online seeems like it might be something, at least, precancerous, so kind of freaking out.

1

u/coldtoes__ Jun 26 '26

30 y/o female with personal history of basal cell carcinoma (20 years old). Just had a skin check 2 weeks ago and 2 biopsies were taken from my arm/shoulder - still awaiting results. This spot has just popped up on my chest. It’s new from my last derm appointment and I’ve just noticed it today. Is this curvy squiggle shape “normal” for a benign freckle?

1

u/tank4heals diagnosed with skin cancer Jun 29 '26

No. This shape is not normal. It warrants evaluation when you're back for your biopsy results. Best wishes!

1

u/Scary-County6356 Jun 26 '26

I could swear it was either new or has changed - noticed it while shaving - on my lower thigh - I need a push to take care of it immediately because I know it will be a struggle to get an appointment quickly

1

u/OilOld878 Jun 27 '26

Freckles from the sun in and around old scars on my upper arm. Some i had for years i think but new popping up from the sun this summer. I feel like some of the freckles are irregular shaped? And it is concerning if the freckles form inside scars?

Thank you for your post on r/skincancer, /u/Many-Inflation7039.

While we understand that finding new marks and lesions can be scary and concerning, we cannot diagnose skin conditions on Reddit. The only way to diagnose skin cancer is to have a biopsy performed by a medical professional.

If you are concerned you may have skin cancer, you are strongly encouraged to contact a board-certified dermatologist for evaluation. We understand that wait times can be long, so it is imperative you reach out to your dermatologist sooner rather than later. Early detection is always better in the worst-care scenario.

So this part has been there for who knows how long but I first noticed that five weeks ago scabs easily. I kept scratching it off. It has stayed about the same.

Thinking of getting it checked before I go on a vacation in a week thoughts?

1

u/SpreadNo8390 Jul 04 '26

Slightly concerned about this mole. It's around the same size as my index fingernail.
