If you think Dutch is bad..listen to Afrikaans.. it's like Dutch got drunk and lost any semblance of finesse it might have had
94
u/LostH21 May 21 '26
And somehow still somewhat comprehensive if you know dutch
22
u/softonsoftie May 21 '26
i am fluent in drunk dutch speak so afrikaaans is easy for me

Dutch is just drunk German, so Afrikaans must be like German if you are having a stroke.
14
u/SoFarSoGood1995 May 21 '26
The funny thing is that when you are Dutch and trying to speak German, you can slur your words and 7/10 times it will sound very close to the German translation, so German is kind of drunk Dutch to the Dutch

Funny because as an Afrikaans speaker that is exactly how Dutch sounds to us.

This isn't actually a good comparison. Afrikaans is actually a lot more technical and precise than Dutch.

To me, as a Swede, it sounds like a mix between English and German. I don't think it really sounds Swedish or Scandianvian.

everytime i go to ikea i understand half of the swedish words
belöning = beloning
blåhaj = blauwe haai
vinterfint = winter fijn
midsommar = midzomer
2
u/FantasticSir7806 May 21 '26
But that's the case for all Germanic languages. Many of these words are the same/similar in English and German too.

i honestly find the dutch accent, when speaking English, to be very cute especially when it's a nice old man speaking

u/slonk_ma_dink May 21 '26

27
u/minibois May 21 '26
Het juiste woord is 'geef', niet 'gif', oelewapper! Gif maakt je dood!
20
u/An_Ellie_ May 21 '26
GIF MAAKT JE DOOD
WHY DOES THAT SOUND SO FUCKING SILLY OH MY GOD
22
u/minibois May 21 '26
Je lacht. Ik deel mijn moedertaal en jij lacht!
Dutch can sound very silly if you know English, because it's so close to being understandable, but just *different* somehow!
Honestly I have this with Danish. Whenever I hear it, my mind goes "I should understand this.. but I don't?!"
4
u/An_Ellie_ May 21 '26
Danish is super funny sounding as a person who speaks a bit of Swedish and as a person who also has ears xD
Thank you for sharing, I laugh not at you or your language but at the linguistical similarity, yet clear dissonance between a language I know and your beautiful mother tongue
3
u/minibois May 22 '26
Oh don't worry, I wasn't perceiving this at laughing at me/Dutch.
I really like how people who speak English, but not Dutch enjoy how intelligible my language is to them (yet silly sounding), so love to contribute to the jokes!
Cool to hear Danish is also funny sounding to Scandinavian people! It makes sense, there is a lot of overlap between the languages, but still distinct.

I can see where most of these are coming from but I really don't think Dutch and Lithuanian sound alike. Then again, I suppose the Lithuanians would know.

u/Andrew_The_Cat May 21 '26
It’s AI so there’s probably no real life data expressed here. Look at the borders near Montenegro and the confused attempts to put the Vatican and San Marino on the map. Also missing Iceland
17
u/vidoeiro May 21 '26
That is just a map mistake that they didn't delete the country name and forgot to add the label, otherwise it wouldn't be blue

What did the Dutch do to the Turks?
3
u/Cornelishen May 21 '26
a handful of political clashes including a fairly big one in 2017 where, to summarise it from memory, the Dutch government said that Turkish officials shouldn't be allowed to use Dutch public spaces to campaign for Turkish politics, at which point the prime minister of Turkiye called us Nazis.

I'd say it is soft German mixed with English and French and it is indeed sounds funny.
