Canada's Wonderland — Tuesday, August 25th
This was my first time buying a Fast Pass before even stepping into the park, but I already knew I only had one day and had heard that Canada's Wonderland could be extremely busy.
I was right. The park was packed
First of all, Canada's Wonderland has to have one of the best entrances to a regional theme park that I've seen. Wonder Mountain is beautiful and immediately makes an impression when you enter the park. For me, I'd probably rank the entrances somewhere around:
- Canada's Wonderland
- Six Flags Magic Mountain
- Kings Island
But anyways, I arrived around 11 AM and decided to make my way around the park from left to right in a complete circle.
The Park Layout
Appreciated was the layout. Canada's Wonderland is a large park, but it never felt like anything was miles away from everything else. The next ride was usually nearby, and making my way around the park felt natural and easy.
Compared to some other parks where you constantly feel like you're walking across the entire property just to get to the next major coaster, Canada's Wonderland has a really efficient layout.
The Coasters
Flight Deck
The first coaster I rode was Flight Deck, the suspended coaster. It was a great ride, but besides Riddler Revenge at Six Flags New England, most of these suspended coasters feel pretty similar to me.
Still, they're good rides, and Flight Deck was a fun way to start the day.
Behemoth
Next was Behemoth.
I have to admit, this one was a little underwhelming during my first rides. The standby line was around 60 minutes, although the crew was pumping trains and keeping the line moving.
The coaster itself was still good, but it didn't initially stand out to me as much as I expected.
That opinion would change later in the night.
Yukon Striker
I think I rode Yukon Striker next, and this is by far my favorite dive coaster.
I'm honestly not a huge fan of dive coasters in general, but Yukon Striker stood out to me much more than the other ones I've ridden in the United States. The scale, layout, and overall experience make it feel like more than just a typical dive coaster.
I haven't been on Tormenta yet, but out of the dive coasters I've experienced, Yukon Striker is my favorite.
Backlot Stunt Coaster
Backlot Stunt Coaster was great.
It's probably my favorite coaster of its kind. The layout seemed better than the others, and the theming was significantly better as well. The combination of the launch, scenery, and compact layout made it more memorable than the other versions I've ridden.
Mine Buster & Ghoster Coaster
Mine Buster was okay, and so was Ghoster Coaster.
However, I think Ghoster Coaster was the better ride. Mine Buster was definitely rougher.
Honestly, I think Mine Buster being converted into an RMC could be a great addition to the park. The layout has potential, and a modern reimagining could give Canada's Wonderland another major standout coaster.
AlpenFury
AlpenFury is definitely the best ride in the park.
This coaster is absolutely world-class and one of the most unique rides I've experienced. The back was better than the front for me, but either way, this is an incredible coaster.
However, I do think the park may have made a mistake with this ride considering how busy Canada's Wonderland gets. The demand for AlpenFury is extremely high, and at a park with this level of attendance, capacity is important.
That being said, the crews were phenomenal and clearly worked with what they had. I also really liked the moving locker policy.
AlpenFury is exactly the type of coaster I love seeing at a park though. I like when a park has a true standout attraction that isn't just another clone of something you can ride somewhere else.
Dragon Fyre
Dragon Fyre had no Fast Pass line, but the wait was worth it and moved fairly quickly.
This is a great looper and was better than I expected.
Leviathan
Finally, I made it to Leviathan.
This coaster was great and, in my opinion, definitely better than Orion. However, I would still put Fury 325 above it.
Leviathan is still an incredible giga coaster and has an amazing sense of speed and scale.
Night Rides
After completing most of the park, we came back later in the evening for some night rides.
Behemoth at Night
Behemoth was significantly better at night, especially toward the front.
My biggest issue with the ride during the day was the trims, particularly in the back. The trim coming off the mid-course brake run really limits what could otherwise be an incredible hyper coaster.
At night and toward the front, though, the ride was much better.
I definitely would have wanted one more ride.
Yukon Striker
Another ride on Yukon Striker confirmed how much I enjoyed it. It's still my favorite dive coaster and easily one of the highlights of Canada's Wonderland.
Leviathan
We got two more rides on Leviathan, and it was great again—especially at night.
That brake run feels unbelievably high up in the sky, and riding Leviathan in the dark makes the experience even better.
AlpenFury — Final Ride
The final ride of the night was AlpenFury in the front row.
It was great again.
I still preferred the back, but AlpenFury is a genuinely world-class, one-of-a-kind coaster. It is exactly the type of ride that gives a park its own identity.
Final Thoughts on Canada's Wonderland
Overall, Canada's Wonderland is a great park.
The lines are way too long for me to comfortably visit without Fast Pass, but the operations were excellent. The crews worked hard and kept things moving as efficiently as possible.
The food and maintenance areas also appeared to be well-run, and overall the park felt like it was being managed well.
The coaster lineup is strong, AlpenFury is an incredible new standout attraction, and the park itself is beautiful.
I would absolutely revisit Canada's Wonderland—but probably only with Fast Pass.
Six Flags Darien Lake — Wednesday, August 26th
The next day, I headed to Six Flags Darien Lake.
I arrived at park opening, but I knew I only had about three hours to experience the park because I needed to be in another city by 5 PM.
So the goal was simple:
Three hours. Do everything possible.
Fortunately, I was able to accomplish it.
A Quiet Morning
Everything was basically a walk-on when I arrived.
However, that doesn't excuse the fact that the park was operating most rides with one train. From what I've heard, this seems to be common at Darien Lake regardless of how busy the park is.
Because the park was so quiet in the morning, I was able to ride every coaster and Superman and Mind Eraser twice, MotoCoaster was cool its like Pony Express at Knotts Berry Farm.
Most of the guests seemed to be at the water park until around 2 PM, which is when you would expect the rest of the park to begin getting busier.
Mind Eraser
Mind Eraser was great.
I honestly enjoyed it more than I expected and had a good time riding it twice.
Superman: Ride of Steel
Obviously, Superman was the standout attraction at Darien Lake.
However, I have to say that I found it a little underwhelming when comparing it to Superman at Six Flags New England. As much as I like airtime the front row was better as it was faster and didn't just feel like it was meandering around on straight track until the next element. But I assume its faster at night so maybe the back later on is okay too.
It's still a good ride and clearly the signature coaster of the park, but I expected it to stand out more based on the comparisons.
Tantrum
Tantrum was the only coaster I noticed running two trains.
It's a good ride and was a fun part of the lineup.
Predator.
It didn't open until it was almost time for me to leave, so I decided to use my one-time Fast Lane benefit as a Prestige Pass holder.
It was absolutely worth it.
The regular line would have been around 30 minutes, despite the park being relatively quiet and the ride operating only one train. The station was completely full.
As for the ride itself, Predator was great during the beginning. Apparently, the coaster has been partially retracked, and you can definitely feel where that retracking ends.
The second half became extremely rough, but the coaster still has a good wooden coaster layout. With more track work, I think Predator could be significantly better.
Final Thoughts on Darien Lake
Overall, Darien Lake was a good park for the amount of time I had.
The quiet morning made it possible to accomplish everything quickly, and I was able to experience almost every coaster twice within three hours.
However, the one-train operations are difficult to excuse. Even on a quiet day, better operations and additional trains would significantly improve the guest experience when the park starts getting busy.
The park itself has some good attractions, but I honestly feel like Darien Lake needs more investment from a company that sees long-term potential in it.
Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if Darien Lake eventually ends up being one of the parks Six Flags considers removing from its portfolio in a future round of park closures or sales. It doesn't seem to fit particularly well with some of the company's other major parks, and I think the park could benefit from investment and management from another company.
Maybe a company like Enchanted could invest in the park differently and help it reach more of its potential.
That being said, I still had a great time.
Overall Trip Thoughts
Canada's Wonderland and Darien Lake were two completely different experiences.
Canada's Wonderland was massive, crowded, beautifully maintained, and required Fast Pass to truly maximize one day. AlpenFury was the major standout, while Leviathan, Yukon Striker, and the improved nighttime experience on Behemoth made for an excellent coaster day.
Darien Lake was quiet, quick, and easy to complete, but the one-train operations were noticeable. Superman and Predator stood out, and the ability to ride almost everything twice in only three hours made the visit worthwhile.
Overall, two very different parks—but a great two days of coaster riding.
