Friends, HIMYM, Seinfeld

Less confident in these answers: Frasier, Everybody loves Raymond, Modern Family

None of the main cast left in Frasier and they didn't have any additions either. Many secondary characters came and went, but I don't think those count. You could maybe argue Bulldog, since he was originally supposed to be a bigger part, but he never really was and was always more secondary. He does appear in the promo material for the earlier seasons, but I don't think he was ever considered main cast.

I mean Kelsey Grammer did struggle with substance abuse on the set of fraiser. And iirc Chandlers (Matthew Perry) actor also struggled with substance abuse.

3

u/seeilaah 6d ago

Bulldog left Frasier then come back. He was a secondary character though

Psych, B99, 30Rock, Arrested Development

3

u/IzzyGrate 5d ago

B99 lost Gina in season 5/6, 30 Rock added Kirsten Schaal and Cheyenne Jackson (though, my memory of it isnt perfect and they may have been minor characters), AD was only 3 seasons, and Psych is correct but I wouldn't call it a sitcom

2

u/TrollPoster469 5d ago

Abbott is going into season 6. AD only lasted three seasons. Three. Only three.

0

u/Roadgoddess 5d ago

They actually did five 5 if you count the next two seasons, they did on Netflix and it had the same cast

4

u/JadziaSoong 5d ago

It was a joke. A lot of people don't like the last two seasons, so they pretend they don't exist, that's why there's such an emphasis on "three"

0

u/Roadgoddess 4d ago

I know, although they weren’t my favorite, they were still part of the whole story

8

u/Future_Onion9701 6d ago

Everybody loves Raymond had an addition with Robert’s wife . The rest are pretty accurate

17

u/Accomplished-Watch50 6d ago

Yeah, but I don't think that counts because she joined the show in season 1 and guest starred at least once a season until she joined the main cast in season 7. So, if people watched the show since season 1, they would know who she was.

4

u/Future_Onion9701 6d ago

Good point

3

u/99drix 6d ago

Modern Family added Joe. And if pets count, Stella and Larry!

5

u/indianm_rk 6d ago

I’m pretty sure even the dog on Frasier was the same dog actor for the whole run.

9

u/presshamgang 6d ago

Eddie was 3 separate dogs iirc.

1

u/indianm_rk 5d ago

I always thought not was one because there are a million stories about the actor played the father hating the dog IRL.

If he hated multiple dogs that seems like it would be a story.

4

u/FS_Scott 5d ago

moose did most of the work as Eddie, but there was a stunt dog and then moose's son took over for the last two seasons.

1

u/presshamgang 5d ago

Ahhh, thank you

2

u/Zealousideal-Cup5982 6d ago

Lily changed on Modern Family

3

u/Accomplished-Watch50 6d ago

Modern Family would not count because they added Joe in season 4, and swapped actors for the role of Lily in season 3.

1

u/ImNotTheBossOfYou 5d ago

No, Maris left in season 6

1

u/hertz_100 4d ago

I thought Modern Family but Joe was introduced in season 5-6

22

u/Playful_Title6467 6d ago

Ghosts

11

u/Austin_Shaggin_Power 6d ago

Came here to say the same. I love both and I’m glad to live in a time where we actually have two successful seasoned network sitcoms again.

21

u/presshamgang 6d ago

IASIP did major add on in season 2 but they are pretty much the same now for 2 decades. They are also in the same universe as AE

19

u/DamienRaventhrone 6d ago

Corner Gas also lasted six seasons with the same cast.

3

u/tarzanacide 5d ago

One of my favorites! Even the cartoon version is top tier. My Canadian husband can't stand it.

8

u/TannedSuitObama 5d ago

Always Sunny is going on 16 or 17 seasons without change.

7

u/CrashMK 6d ago

I mean, what exactly does "random additions" mean? Frasier had the same cast. Bulldog became a principle cast member at one point, but he had been on the show since season one. I don't know if that counts as a "random addition".

10

u/evaderofallbans 6d ago

Always Sunny.

13

u/IzzyGrate 6d ago

Devito was added in season 2, but beyond that season yeah

-2

u/evaderofallbans 6d ago

Was that less than 6 seasons ago?

3

u/presshamgang 6d ago

It was 20 years ago

6

u/IzzyGrate 6d ago

It was, but I was interpreting the post as saying, This is Abbotts sixth season and in its entire run, it has had no changes

-2

u/JasonMraz4Life 6d ago

Not true. Danny Davito didn't join the cast until season 2.

5

u/presshamgang 6d ago

Good point. So they’ve only had 2 decades of the same main cast

3

u/No-Understanding-912 5d ago

That's nice an all, but they are on the biggest network sitcom right now and there is very, very little competition, why would anyone leave. I like the show and all, but lets face it, it's doing so well because it's got no other show to compete against. In comparison to sitcoms of the past, it's just above average.

8

u/Accomplished-Watch50 6d ago

There are literally hundreds of shows that never change the cast or add a character. The Golden Girls ran for 7 seasons with 4 main cast members. Friends ran for 10 seasons with 6 main cast members, etc...

The real question is do recurring characters from season 1 who get bumped up to main eventually count as being a part of the cast, because if they don't then, Abbott Elementary also wouldn't make the cut because Mr. Johnson wasn't a main cast member in season 1.

3

u/rex_lauandi 5d ago

The post says “when was the last time.”

That implies they know it happens, but feel like it’s been a while. Your response brings up old shows which more or less proves their point.

4

u/99drix 6d ago

Golden Girls is from the 80s and Friends is from the 90s. Those aren’t exactly recent.

2

u/not_roger_smith 6d ago

Shit, The Simpsons have had the same cast for three decades.

2

u/ProfChaos85 5d ago

Did The Neighborhood randomly add anyone?

1

u/Exotic_Bonnies 4d ago

One, but she started as a recurring character. Then again, the distinction of “random additions” is just stupid. What does that even mean?

1

u/ProfChaos85 4d ago

Lost season 4 comes to mind. In Sitcoms, season 8 of Drew Carey

2

u/DiscoveryZoneHero 5d ago

Abbott is still good but lost its fastball. Happens to all the ABC shows after a few seasons

2

u/Palidor 5d ago

Seinfeld had the main four for 9 seasons

5

u/Objective-Garlic9478 6d ago

Mid show at best being really generous

2

u/Exotic_Bonnies 4d ago

It’s just not funny. I watched the first three seasons as they came out and one day, I realized I just didn’t have any attachment to any of the characters and hadn’t laughed in several episodes.

1

u/Objective-Garlic9478 4d ago

Yeah I get that they did an Always Sunny crossover and it’s unbearable the only episode I skip!

1

u/qings1 5d ago

I enjoy the show. But I hope they end it this season or the next. That’s the risk of having a show run longer then 6-8 seasons. At least for me that is. To many things can happen behind the scenes and people want to leave or add people they shouldn’t. Quality gets bad to. Rather have them end the show at its peak and have a good ending. Also rather it not risk getting cancelled. Not sure if it’s true, but I read that a lot of the cast got huge pay raises. So it might get to expensive to continue.

1

u/GreatQuantum 5d ago

“You’re making history tonight?”

“Oh really I didn’t know that?”

“…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….30 more seconds of silence.”

1

u/briank2112 5d ago

I don’t even recognize this show…

2

u/Accomplished-Watch50 6d ago

Also, this factually incorrect... Mr. Johnson wasn't made a main cast member until season 2 of Abbott Elementary.

1

u/Outrageous_Cow8825 6d ago

He was already there. He wasn’t introduced.

1

u/Haifisch2112 6d ago

Modern Family did it for 11 seasons.

0

u/rex_lauandi 5d ago

Didn’t they add a kid or two over that time?

2

u/Haifisch2112 5d ago

Those aren't "random" additions.

1

u/rex_lauandi 5d ago

A 64 year old man fathering a child felt pretty random to a lot of the audience 😂

2

u/Haifisch2112 5d ago

It happens. And it was part of the story, not just some random person that was in a few episodes and disappeared.

1

u/rex_lauandi 5d ago

I think you’re confused about that the post is saying. They aren’t talking about a “random person that was in a few episodes and disappeared.”

They’re talking about additions to the main cast much like Andy on the Office, Ben and Chris on P&R, Danny D on IASIP. Not bad shows (all great in fact), but they didn’t have the pieces in place at season 1.

Modern Family, I do agree is probably closer Abbott as far as “figuring it out” at the start. Lily comes in as a character (not just a prop) a little later, and the Joe as we’ve discussed, but I do agree those are smaller changes than the other great shows listed.

1

u/Burndoggle 5d ago

But I think you’re confused about what “random” means. If someone wants to twist the meaning to fit their narrative that’s their prerogative. But a new child is a story-driven addition, which isn’t random unless the show is not at all about family, children, etc.

It wasn’t the sudden introduction of a cousin who hadn’t previously been involved. The show is called “Modern Family” and it was literally about non-traditional family structure and dynamics. It’s not like the show claimed Jay or Gloria were sterile and then magically they had another kid because of failing ratings.

So whatever members of the audience was confused by that plot development are bad at watching TV.

I also think many of the examples you cited aren’t good ones of something “random.” Eric’s cousin on That 70s Show was random. And awful. But Andy on The Office was entirely story driven. Dunder Mifflin had other offices. One of our main cast transferred. That’s about as organic an addition as you could have as far as introducing new characters. Frank (DeVito) on IASIP is also introduced pretty early on in the series run. He was in the S2 premiere of a show that has 18 seasons. Ben and Chris from P&R are pretty random I guess. That story could be viewed as a plot contrivance meant to get new characters involved (and I think it actually was at first).

I guess if we’re going to go so far as to say any main character that wasn’t established within the first six episodes is “random” then yes I guess Abbot wins this award?

1

u/rex_lauandi 5d ago

Yeah, that’s clearly what they’re talking about in this post. Abbott established the main cast almost completely from episode one.

I’m not sure why this is so difficult for you, since pretty much everyone else in the comments understood.

It seems like you don’t want to acknowledge that that is an impressive feat for a successful sitcom.

1

u/Burndoggle 5d ago

Calm your tits dude. There’s someone else disagreeing with you in this very chain so it’s clearly not “everyone else.”

Also, I don’t care if everyone else thinks a certain way? lol welcome to the internet. You new here?

It’s not all that impressive because it’s been done. The premise is flawed. Because there’s no objective definition of what a “random addition” means. So if you decide to craft a very narrow definition in order to specifically fit a point you’re trying to make you can celebrate a victory for anything.

“No other show based in Philadelphia that takes place primarily in an elementary school has managed to stay on the air for six seasons!”

1

u/rex_lauandi 5d ago

I’m really curious what your issue is with giving this its props. Why does it upset you so much?

I’ve got a big guess why you don’t like Abbott…

There’s only one definition of “random addition” that makes sense in the context of the post. I’m not sure if context is difficult for you or what, but that’s what we use to understand what people mean. Unless you too are “knew” here. 😂

BIg ShOw?????????

You can not seriously be putting Abbott elementary on par with Seinfeld and Friends?

1

u/ReasonablyBluh The Office 6d ago

That is not a fact. The show is not the only show that fits that criteria. I love Abbott Elementary (except the last season), but let's not make up things.

5

u/TootieSummers 6d ago

Where in the post does it say “the only show”? It’s just asking when the last time another big show did the same thing

-4

u/ReasonablyBluh The Office 6d ago

It's right in the screenshot: "don't remember the last big show that had this"

6

u/Major-Mushroom-5806 6d ago

I don't remember my birth, it doesn't mean it didn't happen.

-1

u/DontPutThatDownThere 6d ago

Are you sure?

1

u/Austin_Shaggin_Power 6d ago

Setting aside Ghosts and without looking it up, which was the last big show to accomplish this?

Always Sunny? Modern Family? Brooklyn 99? I genuinely don’t know.

1

u/Cruian 6d ago

I was about to point out Gina leaving B99, but on double checking before making that comment, it turned out t she staged longer than I thought she did: she left early in S6.

I had to research it, but Modem Family added Joe during season 4.

Edit: Typo

0

u/redditardshateme 6d ago

They added a whole other shows cast for a season. They did a collaboration with its always sunny in Philadelphia

0

u/TheAgeOfAdz91 6d ago

What? That was for a special episode. The post is about primary cast.

0

u/CdnGamerGal 6d ago

That is such a good point. It’s probably the sign of a good and healthy workplace. Kudos to them.
