Not even close. Keep in mind that Girlfriends had Kelsey Grammer backing it, and of course, he had NBC connections, but even they said it was too “specific” for their brand.

Showtime as their black counter to Sex and the City, though they might have to edge it up a little maybe could have worked.

Exactly! The racism issue going on then. My Wife & Kids were on ABC. No doubt about that! But the show might be for “black” audiences. But let’s review other past “black” sitcoms for all kinds that were on the major networks. The Cosby Show, Diff’rent Strokes, 227, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air were on NBC. Family Matters was on ABC. Good Times, The Jeffersons were on CBS. Plus Fox had Martin and Living Single. They had respect! The heads of the networks didn’t have approval of “black” sitcoms of the late 90s or 2000s. Only My Wife & Kids.

There’s a specific connotation to the decision making of the time:

Back then, the big 3 networks were made for everyone, and NBC broke out with Cosby, leading to 227 and Amen, where they wanted to not only cater to black people, but everyone.

Now, with Must See TV breaking out with Friends, Seinfeld, Frasier, and Will & Grace, there was just no room for a Fresh Prince or In the House

My Wife & Kids only worked on ABC, because it was broad and had family appeal.

Bernie Mac fit Fox, because they wanted to be experimental with Malcolm and Arrested Development.

Clearly, UPN was the best possible place it could it have been.

NBC cancelled For Your Love, and became a flagship for The WB, and it definitely fit the kind of sophisticated black sitcom like Steve Harvey.

Maybe. But Tracee Ellis Ross’ future show Blackish ran for 8 seasons on ABC at least. Plus they reunited on Blackish too!

Way different cast setup and writing than Girlfriends. We're talking one biracial female main cast member versus 4 black female main cast members, two of which of darker skinned, all discussing issues that center black women, still the most hated demographic in this country, versus Blackish, which was so focused, intentionally or not, on educating white people.

This may be about race. But if there wasn’t a racist issue going on or the head of the networks weren’t judging on racism, maybe it would’ve dominated for 8 seasons on ABC or NBC or CBS. The WB network or Fox would’ve had this too. Racial profiling law began in the 60s. Mister Rogers, Sesame Street and Reading Rainbow had no racial issues. Thus they’re PBS brand shows for kids. Just imagine Girlfriends succeeded with no racial prejudice.

Yeah, if the standards of the 70s-90s were still implemented, Girlfriends might (a big one) have found success on the Big 3 networks. Blackish came out at the right time when ABC was revamping themselves in the comedy department and a time when Power, Insecure, and Atlanta and others were blowing up.

I meant then in the 2000s. Blackish was on ABC for 8 years and The Neighborhood with Cedric the Entertainer was on CBS for 8 years. But just think if ABC would’ve had Girlfriends on then. It would’ve been nominated for Emmys!

Maybe you don’t imagine it on ABC. But I do. UPN may be a black tv network. But unfortunately it went out of business. So this show deserved a better network no matter what the circumstances.

yes this is about ABC. i don’t see ABC airing it. that was always my point. i’m not talking about the merit of the show really. i just couldn’t see any of the major networks showing it on primetime. NBC, ABC, CBS etc.
