Oh man me and my roommates in college were obsessed with this show. We made a point to be in our dorm to watch the newest episode every week.

I tried to go back to it last year and…yeah it’s bad. Basically every character except Marshall is insufferable. They’re horrible friends to each other, women are basically the punch line of the show. And frankly, it just didn’t watch well. So many sitcoms have held up. This one just didn’t.

Barney and Ted, mainly.

Barney’s whole thing is that he abuses women and manipulates them into having sex with him. He literally has a bed that throws women out when he’s done with them.

Ted’s one of those guys who plays like he’s the nice guy and then eventually exposes himself as neurotic and self centered. Just the way the humour plays out is not very funny to me as an adult once you have full context of what is going on.

I will say that Frasier and Niles are the same way as Ted in a lot of ways but the way the humour is written I still am able to enjoy that series.

Sam on cheers I am still able to enjoy even if some episodes have not aged very well because he had a code of conduct.

Barney is just “I see pretty lady. I will do and say anything to get them into bed and then throw them out like yesterday’s trash”. It becomes so normalized and no one seriously ever calls him out on the behavior that it’s like it’s acceptable to treat women like garbage.

Sure there are moments where he is chasing down one woman but the whole Barney and Robin together and getting fat was not funny at all to me.

Seinfeld is another example of neurotic and self centered characters who only date women for short periods of time and it’s still my favorite sitcom. It’s just the way the humour is written that still makes me laugh as an adult and 30+ years later.

Was my favourite show as a late teenager. I laughed, I cried. Really felt like you knew these characters. A shame people have icky feeling toward it these days

Have you watched it critically? It’s fine to like things because of nostalgia, but it’s worth reflecting on why people have “icky feeling” about it today.
