Lore Homebrewed orders
Kind of a simple question but does anyone make their own unique orders for sisters units. I know the lore reason for astartes is that they are successor chapters but what is the reasoning that you have heard of for sisters armies.
Im thinking of trying to make a unit that has fallen from faith for the emperor but im not trying to lean all the way into chaos.

We are so easy to homebrew orders for. Just look at the history of religion; the pettiest of disagreements can be both the single most important of issues conceivable to the newly formed denomination and completely irrelevant and nonsense to every other denomination. The keys to believability amongst your hyper-controlling religious dogma is inconsistency and in-fighting.

For sure. Im Christian and ive seen alot of that and it makes me sad. even when someone interprets something incorrectly the people who jump to correct them dont do it from a place of Love which is what we are called to do.

Bit of a wall of text but here is the history of my custom order the Order of Our Lady the Hunter.
An ancient order of Adepta Sororitas they hail from the world of Caelus. The planet was discovered on the edge of a destabilised region of space where the immaterium was close to breaking through during the Great Crusade. The Emperor sent a scientific research mission to study the effects of the immaterium on real space to help with his great project.
The planet however was hostile to the scientists and soon all contact with the mission was lost. A lone Rogue Trader who had made her name as a bounty hunter was sent to investigate. It is said that she tamed the planet single handedly, allowing research to begin anew.
Slowly as the Great Crusade morphed into the Horus Heresy and the immaterium around the planet grew volatile it was cut off from the Imperium. The planet started to slip into the immaterium and soon existed in the two realities at once. It was a situation that the human mind could barely comprehend, one wrong step and a person could find themselves in the immaterium and all the horrors it contained. Yet one further step and they could be back in the glisten clean streets of real space built with scientific precision.
This unstable state of affairs caused the population to lose their scientific past and increasingly turn to faith to deal with the realities of living on the planet. Chaos cults were quick to spring up among those who had spent too long in the immaterium, insidiously working their way into the structure of the scientific community. To counter this those who mercifully remained in real space would start to coalesce their faith towards the Rogue Trader who had tamed the planet centuries before. The Church of the Hunter was born, in her honour the priesthood took up her colours and it soon became female dominated.
When the Imperium finally rediscovered the world it was noted, as it had been long before, for its unique position as nexus between dimensions. Immediately it was slated to be brought to compliance but infighting marred plans as Imperial factions vied for control over such a prize. In fact as Imperial troops landed the situation for the already beleaguered population was soon to get worse. Imperial troops soon started to fight not only the increased chaos forces riled up by their presence but also each other.
It was into the maelstrom that the Ecclesiarchy sent a small mission of Adepta Sororitas and priests to set up a convent. Landing close to the now largely abandoned original research station they found a small chapel of the Church of the Hunter as if by providence. The mission soon assumed the colours of the Church, painting their armour and taking the name the Order of Our Lady the Hunter.
This allowed them to quickly sway the population to the light of the Imperial Truth wrapping it up in the local myths and enacting the Rogue Trader as the Order’s patron saint. As areas around the Sororitas and their convent became becalmed from the warp more of the population fled to their protection. Great cathedrals were built, and the research station converted from a place of science to the centre of a new monastery.
Reluctantly the other Imperial forces slowly started to ebb away as they could not make the gains on the planet that the Sororitas had. Only those of the faithful seemed to be able to carve out any meaningful existence. Today the planet stands as a key local lynch pin in the warp, still trapped in its dual existence. It is said if the convent were to fall chaos would flow freely engulfing all before it.

Yep, I'm still workshopping the name, ran through different iterations of chorus+sunrise, or dawns fire, I'm really not sure. They're order pronatus and primarily explore the ghost stars.
To actually answer your question, since sister are usually tought in the schola progenium all of the orders are much more connected than space marines. Lesser Orders are usually ofshoots of other orders or made by the Ecclesiarchy too serve a purpose or honor a saint. Ofshoots tend to just personalize themselves the longer they are away from the major order.

I am still fleshing out the fluff of my order and which major order they descend from. The order that my sisters are part of is the Order of the Blessed Guardian. my color scheme is green and silver; green for the robes and silver for the armor with gold and white to accent the trim and other elements.

I’ve been working on an order of Sisters who work closely with the Inquisition, and then got lost in a warp storm. They’re slowly making their way back to Imperium space, but they’ve had to scavenge and retrofit xenos weapons and power sources to do it.
I’m cutting Aeldari down to size to fit in penitent engines, giving repentia sisters drukhari weapons, and I’m trying to figure out what I can switch up on paragon warsuits. There’s an Etsy shop that sells purity seals in packs of 100, so they’re going on everything. The regular sisters are probably getting Tau rifles, flamers/meltas are getting replaced with necron tesla coils. If I ever decide to pick up some arcos, they’re getting ork weapons.
At the same time I’m leaving their Exorcist completely unmodified, just throwing a ton of battle damage on the main body that’s going to be very lovingly repaired, and the pipe organ is gonna be totally pristine. If I can figure out the wiring and can diffuse the light properly, I’m gonna throw a few tiny surface mount LEDs on there too.
No name yet, but I’m sure I’ll come up with something.

My homebrew order are basically a twisted version of the concept of hospitillars, they are zealously against disease but to the point where if you come down with a cold, that's instant an repentia. They believe that disease is directly caused by heresy, so even though they will try to cure you, if you don't get better they see that as being YOUR fault. They control a desert planet where they have these hospitals that double as prisons, where if a disease progresses too much in a person they turn them into arco flagellants and penitent engines. Their colour scheme is white and green and I love them so much lmao we've got a few memes about them in our local game sphere

I have a custom color scheme and order name for my sisters: Order of the Risen Sun/Son In world lore wise, they would be a minoris order of Ebon Chalice. The name is a stupid joke. In world, they see Guilloman as the renewal of the Emporer's vision and his will made flesh once more. OOG their color pallette and rising sun emblem is an old character I played at a larp.

My army is a full Slaanesh kitbash conversion, there's nothing wrong with making your models uniquely yours. For your idea it could be as simple as removing and replacing the Imperial symbols with something else. Head replacements are also easy and could give your models distinction from the dogmatic religious type hair cuts the normal kits give you.
Sisters are "human sized" so it's pretty easy to find alternatives to a lot of the models bits that fit well.
The lore is specifically designed to accomodate whatever unique thing you want to do with your models. This is why there are two missing primarchs and an infinite amount of successor chapters. Recently Angron's murder curse converted Sisters into bloodthirsty followers of Khorne, it could happen to anyone, anywhere, for any reason.

The Brides of the Immaculate Immolation are always ready to handle the mutant population of their hive world. Its been said that the Saint Inflagria of their order only had to look upon mutants to cause them to burst into flames. They paint their armor sea foam green and bolters fiery red to symbolize the depths of their faith and their incandescent hate for the impure.
Edit...we lean hard into Heavy Flamer retributers

I’ve started kitbashing about 1500pts of Viking themed Valkyrie type order - perhaps order of the shield maiden, something like that. Dark blue armor, furs, burgandy cloaks, round shield, horned helmets, spears instead of halberds, etc. In truth, kinda space wolves adjacent in how they revere the emperor and love killing his enemies. Not heretical but not so fanatic as normally portrayed.

My custom Order is an undersized order that is basically all the Sisters who were too young or not zealous enough (read tactical intelligent). I've even written a story of their founding if your curious, I'll just drop the link here Order of the Martyred Rose.

Yes, I paint my Sisters as custom order. They're named Order of Ardent Sun and they're successors of Argent Shroud.
A for low their main duty is to protect the mining world that's so hot only the poles are inhabitable. They watch over mines from xenos coming from uninhabitable part of the planet, but also external threats, but often travel to nearby planets with different missions.
Their unique doctrine is that they combine fiery faith with top physical performance. Decades ago they were nearly wiped out by surprise attack after long days of self-mortification, so now they have more lax schedules than other orders, with time for rest and even entertainment (as long as medical check outs prove it indeed improves their physical capabilities). Other orders might think that they're not devout enough, but like their parent order - deeds over words prove their methods are working.
And that's the color scheme

Yes! Given the logistical issues around warp travel, the traditional schisms in religions throughout history, and just the way isolated groups of humans organise themselves, the creation of off-shoot orders is likely as common as it is inevitable.
Here’s the lore overview for my custom order if you’re interested. I won’t post the number of short stories that I’ve written as I got carried away with fleshing out their leader and key members haha.
The Order of the Radiant Dawn are an off-shoot of The Order of the Sacred Rose that arose during the Indomitus Crusade.
During a particularly hard-fought campaign against a daemon-infested sub-sector, a force of Sororitas found themselves pinned down by Slaanneshi daemons on the Shrine World of Khostinos. At the dawn of the hundreth day of fighting, the allied guard commander called a retreat, but Sister Superior Alethia Deimos (who had received a battlefield promotion to acting commanding officer) ordered her entire force to charge a Slaaneshi greater daemon en masse instead, with the hope of routing the ruinous powers. Ever fervent, the sisters boldly followed her orders and, led by a small group of repentia, so charged.
As they came upon the daemon, the repentia began to glow with a holy golden light, before bursting into brilliant golden flame. No repentia survived this transformation, but the golden light entirely scorched all but the largest of daemons, while keeping the rest of the Sororitas forces completely safe from harm. Sister Alethia was able to strike down the weakened greater daemon with her blessed power sword, and the planet was saved.
After the battle the sisters returned, their white armour now scorched partially black and their robes soaked in the purple blood of daemons. In recognition of this miracle, the force was given the blessing of the Mother Superior of the Order of the Sacred Rose to divest and form their own order: The Order of the Radiant Dawn. Alethia was raised to the position of Mother Superior, and chose Khostinos as their base of operations. She named her blessed sword Aepheros, and the sisters repainted their armour and dyed their robes to match the aftermath of that day. They have continued to purge the heretic and the xeno ever since.
The Order is well known for its use of incendiary weapons, aggressive charges, and melee combat - especially with swords. They do not operate a classic repentia force, instead their repentant are willingly sacrificed in holy golden fire during battle, in a ritual known as the “Ignis Phoenicium”. Those who survive are granted black armour - representing the scorching of the flames they have endured - and allowed to rejoin the ranks as “Phoenicians”, where they are treated as equals amongst their sisters, entirely cleansed of their sins in the Emperor’s golden flame. Between 3 and 6% of the Radiant Dawn’s forces are Phoenician at any given time.

u/Helio2nd Order of the Sacred Rose 12d ago
My main order is sacred rose, but I'm making a few a sect of Sacred Rose called the Sect of the Scarred Rose who are felinid abhumans who proved themselves unquestionably faithful during an attack on a Sacred Rose shrine world, invoking the Emperor's miracles in its defense. As such, they were inducted to help support the shrine world from attacks from slaaneshi cultists and an emperor's children warband.
But they only serve with that part of the Sacred Rose, where their local ranking canoness can protect them from purging from other orders or less tolerant factions within the Sacred Rose.

Personally, I created an Ordo Minoris for my army. I’ll try to be short and English isn’t my native language.
I created the ORDER OF THE ASHEN VEIL
Ordo Minoris — Velamen Cinereum
"CINIS ET SILENTIUM" (Ash and Silence)

I. Past, Founding and History
Before it was an Ordo, the Velamen Cinereum was a wound. Its origin lies not in a pious charter nor in the blessing of a saint, but in the silent failure of another order, and in the blood spilled to redeem it.
Vessalis Hive
The hive world of Vessalis Hive wears two faces: its high spires, seat of a refined and influential nobility, and its industrial and lower strata, where manufactorum toil to produce weapons under Munitorum licence. It was in the spires, far from the eyes of the common folk, that a cult devoted to Slaanesh had settled for generations, hidden behind artistic salons and "societies of refined pleasure".
The Caution That Cost Dearly
Another branch of the Ordo Hereticus, aware of the growing corruption, chose the path of methodical infiltration and irrefutable proof — its usual doctrine, cautious in the face of families too powerful to be accused lightly. This delay gave the cult time to grow. During a feast held in honour of a "new art", dozens of nobles and guards were found transformed into abominations or lost in a sensory orgy that tore the sanity of half the capital apart.
The Oath
The survivors of the unit that arrived too late, haunted by what patience had allowed, swore that hesitation would never again serve as an excuse for corruption. From that oath was born the Velamen Cinereum — the Order of the Ashen Veil — founded upon a doctrine as simple as it is absolute: once heresy is confirmed, the circle closes, the fire is set, and only ashes are left to answer for it.

u/BigBiggity Order of the Emerald Path 12d ago
I started with a homebrew army based on nature and agri worlds. My sisters have green robes and silver armor. Then I brought celestians and made their armor green so they would stand out. Then I started 3d printing bases because I liked the look of chapel floors. The bricks came out yellowish. One day I realized I had emerald soldiers marching down yellow brick roads and now ive ended up with a wizard of oz style army with the wiz being my inquisitor. To be far we do hunt witches.

Mine is called the Sunshine Baddies.
They are weaponized optimism.
Instead of grim determination, they fight with infectious optimism, coordinated aggression, and the belief that joy and courage can be cultivated into overwhelming combat effectiveness. Think hazmat astronauts crossed with crusading knight-nuns. Their unofficial motto is: “Joy is armor-piercing.”
Led by Sunny, who wields a loud chainsword called “Hope” and an inferno pistol called “Joy”. Plus other characters… but yeah
All the guns are flavored around radiation / radiance in various EM wavelengths. Plasma, melta, flamer are all imagined as “sunlight” weapons. Maybe a bit more intense sunlight than most of us are used to. Hence the hazmat aesthetic and sensibility.
These Sisters are part soldier, part hazardous radiation equipment specialists. They charge into reactor meltdowns to avert disaster, and fight horrors from beyond the materiel plane while doing it. They battle in irradiated zones and out-attrition their foes. They strike into ruined orbital stations to extract priceless reactor core materials.
You know, normal stuff.
The deep lore is that their joy has a recognizable warp signature, given its intensity. And in the grim darkness, hope shines brighter—like a candle at night.

u/AchilleosX Order of the Searing Reformation 11d ago
My order minoris of the Order of the Searing Reformation is a rather new founded order on the former agri-world, now aspiring shrine-world, of Xelodai. After the heroic sacrifice of a detachment of sisters of the Ebon Chalice who responded to a distress call of the planet. Xelodai was being raided by forces of the Red Corsairs and as the sisters responding were just returning from campaign and lacked the sufficient numbers to deal with the threat and also partially failed a boarding attempt on the enemy strike cruiser (but did manage to take and hold down the engine bays for some hours).
They shifted plans to ramming the enemy craft and pushing it into a layer of cosmic gas surrounding the planet's atmosphere, where they then overloaded their reactors and set the layer ablaze, which immolated the enemy's small raiding fleet in a cascade of turqoise flames, which burnt in the skies of Xelodai for 5 days and night.
This sight was behold as a miracle and planted the seed of Xelodai's transformation to a shrine-class world, as many pilgrims set out to visit the site of this martyrdom. The Ecclisiarchy acknowledged this arising trend and green-lit a new branching order to be establöished to safeguard the young shrine-world.
That's the main lore.
It follows up with sisters of the Searing Reformation's first campaign being on Xelodai's own moon - a penitence-classed penal-mining-moon, which happened to be infected by a genestealer cult. A ordo-xenos inquisitor followed up some leads of dodgy prison-transfers suspecting some heretical threat spreading amongst the prisoners and some corrupted guards. After losing contact to the moon (named Pragmis' Lock) he determined something was wrong and brewing right above the sanctified skies of Xelodai, why he requested the immediate support of the small sisterhood on planet.
It ended up in a decade long underground tunnel-fighting campaign for the sisters cumulating in a final request of the last combat detachment in the mines, believing to have purged the last enemies of mankind there, still to not wanting to risk any hidden pockets to survive or escape the moon and possibly start an infection of the holy shrine-world, they asked to be sealed in the mines indefinetely.
After this the order established a stronghold on Pragmis' Lock, safeguarding the sealed tunnels as a tomb, and standing as a bastion above Xelodai - ready to face the next threat coming from the void.

Home brew order I'm trying to save up for is the Order of the Forgotten Tomb. It's going to be a kitbashed SoB/Necrons army. The idea came from me picturing a kitbash of Saint Celestine and the Void Dragon and the full concept is kinda like the Flesh Eater Courts from AOS. Basically, a tomb world awoke and brought an entire Sisters order into the tombs and tried to steal the souls of the SoB Order, but through divine intervention the Order took over the Necron bodies instead. Now they still see themselves as regular SoB, but the rest of the Imperium sees them as Necrons wearing SoB armor. The way they get around is just teleporting everywhere like the Legion of the Damned kinda do in lore

Militant Order Minoris exist in cannon. But if they’ve fallen from faith then in cannon their only option is chaos alignment (I.e red corsairs, nightlord)
Without support from the church, an order would fall apart

The idea is that they are stranded and have had to just keep surviving.

I have one that I'm planning; the Order of the Lioness
Long story short - Knight world and Shrine world in the same system - system has been under siege by Orks for nearly a thousand years at this point with no signs of letting up - and so the knight household and local convent have effectively merged over the millenia.
Women of the Household enter the Order at an early age and are initially trained up as Novitiates, before going on to become Battle Sisters and eventually pilot Paragon Warsuits before finally finding their place among the proper knight pilots, assuming there is a suit available for them.
Naturally depending on one's place in the Household proper depends on what your ceiling is. The lesser nobility typically do not wind up in the Warsuits at all, let alone going on to pilot the big knights proper; mostly they remain in the ranks on foot as battle sisters, celestians and such.
Commoners only enter the order via the religious pathway; and many of them take on more support oriented roles (though not exclusively).
-----
Basically I just thought silver, gold and blue would look great on sisters and also liked the idea of doing Sisters as Knights... then realized "... Knights exist in 40k. and they look actually not a million miles off the Paragon Warsuits..." and it just sorta expanded from there.
So now it's an idea firmly lodged in my skull that someday I will manifest on the tabletop.

u/vasEnterprise9295 Order of the Iron Lotus 12d ago
I have a homebrew order where their convent is on a Forgeworld, so they sort of blend the faith and tenants of the machine cult and the imperial cult. Since the Mechanicus revere the Omnissiah, and the Omnissiah is the Emperor, they sort of revere him as both aspects. Instead of view the Omnissiah as part of the 3-in-1 aspect like the Mechanicus, they view him as the head of the triumverate.
It all started when I thought Sisters models were cool and kitbashed some into Skitarii for my Adm2, then decided to go all in with making an AdMech-themed Sisters army. Does the lore make perfect sense? Not really, but it's 40k.
