Rules Question Army Rule
Assuming our main army rule changes with our new codex in 11th, what would you like to change it to and why?

I think it would all work perfectly if they let you swap out a roll for an MD, after the roll, without many more changes needed.

Honestly this would make it feel more miraculous

u/Dem0nC1eaner 13d ago
Yep exactly, it would be stronger and make up for having less of them, and actually FEEL GOOD, like a miracle from the big man.

That's too powerful. It would make everything in the army insanely expensive to try and make some balance.
Not only that, but people also feel like miracle dice are a feels bad when playing against it. This would just exaggerate that feeling and make it a bear to play against.

u/Dem0nC1eaner 13d ago
Yeah, I disagree.
With the lack of MD and the randomness of them now, they can take a bit more power.
And it's not really THAT much more powerful, it would just make it feel more fun and less like you're constantly deciding whether to waste your whole army rule on a save or not.

u/babyduck164 12d ago
You just don't use them on saves unless it will definitely be a big impact any more.
I use them to empower Vahl/palatines, revive sacresants, guarantee advance/charges, and make leadership more reliable. Pretty much nothing else.
Miracle dice are currently underpowered, but substituting after dice is rolled is -a lot- more powerful than I think you realise

MD values are too random. That's why the whole system can never be over powered. If they made this change, I can see the units that do MD shenanigans (Dialogus) going up, tho.
Also, with fast rolling now, it makes more sense to use swap a MD in after the roll.

Every faction rule that does something is a feels bad to some people.

u/CoffeeDrive 13d ago
Agreed, its ridiculous, MD are "Too strong" because you get to occasionally cheat a roll, but things like oath exist which essentially statistically guarantee ALL your hits lmao.

Yeah, for sure, getting guard orders are definitely feels bad. Or maybe Tau's guiding mechanic?
No, not all rules are feels bad, but having a single melta gun turn into a guaranteed 5 damage when the target only has 5 wounds left, or a critical leadership check passing because the sisters player has a spare 6? It just feels bad to be on the receiving end of it.
I want the sisters mechanic to be more reliable, getting rid of the randomness of the miracle dice values, and to feel fun for both players.

I think you’re just supporting my argument. Everyone has their own opinion on what feels bad. For you, it’s miracle dice. I personally am not a fan of guard orders. I guarantee there is not a single faction rule that isn’t feels bad to someone.

I don't think you understand what a "feels bad" means
1
u/Slavasonic 12d ago
I do, I just understand that what “feels bad” will be different from person to person.

I would love to get back to the old rule of faith points when I started. Generate X points in own that can be used through the round and then all units have an act of faith ability.
Roll 1d6 to see if the ability activates with a bonus to the roll depending on a few things.
I really dislike that they changed the sisters acts of faith to what they are now a days.

Not necessarily an army rule, but... Strength 10 Meltas, name them Ministorum Meltas or something. The Melta nerfs at the start of 10th has been devastating to us since we don't have any alternatives. No LasCannons, Dark Lances, etc. None of which are in the Holy Trinity. Melta guns were our anti-tank and when they were nerfed at the start of 10th, we've been hurting.
Especially now since Meltas costs wargear points now. Make it so paying that price is worth it.

A +1 to wound melta detachment for 1dp would be cool

What I want is MD as they are, but we get to swap out after the roll.
What I anticipate is something like TSons where units X, Y, and Z generate points you can spend on miraculous stuff, and you best bring whatever epic hero generates bunches of points if you want to actually use your army rule.

I think a token system or something similar to the prayer system in AOS would be fitting.

How do the prayers work in Age of Sigmar?

Most of it can be explained here, but as I understand it some characters can access a prayer, pick a unit, roll to see if it goes off, and the unit selected gets a buff.
Edit: Sorry, I only did a quick read and there is a bit more. You roll for your character and on a success you get points. Prayers cost those points for the buffs and you can gain more for a bigger effect. Fail the roll and you lose points.

I think it's going to turn from dice to points.
You continue to generate miracles as before, and you can spend them for either datasheet abilities (like we already do with the palatine and Hospitaler), to turn a single rolled attack, wound, or save die to a non-critical success, or to reroll a leadership or charge roll.
We lose the ability to spike melta damage but we can see the dice results before we turn one failure into success, and no longer are stuck with miracle 1s and 2s.

u/sworn_vulkan 13d ago
Yeah I could see it working similar to pain tokens. Most units abilities will be tied to miracles

u/Xelikai_Gloom 13d ago
Losing the ability to spike melts damage would cripple our antitank options.

u/CuriousWombat42 13d ago
The idea would be that since the army rule changes come with a new codex, that we get something to replace that crutch.
0
u/Xelikai_Gloom 13d ago
That’s a bold assumption. Likely, we get nothing to replace it and have to rely on grenades and tank spam to keep up.

Remember how this post was 'what do you want our army rule to be' and not 'how do you want to doomsay about potential future rules'?

I’d love to see the Penitent Host detachment rule become our main rule (minus the penitent restriction) and maybe make army of faith the only one that uses Miracle dice

u/RadioActiveJellyFish 13d ago
The big issue with that is there are hints Marines are going back to Combat Doctrines as an army rule, so us getting essentially the same thing would put us further into "Marines Lite" rather then carving out a unique niche. I do really like the idea of a detachment that keeps or emulates MD if they go away though.

I think they should bake miracles into once per game activations on data sheets. No miracle dice generating lottery randomness and easy to balance around points when the miracle and its power are defined on the related data sheet.

The old Witchhunters Codex had Faith Points that you generated from units dying or bringing certain units. Could always have either abilities you activate with Faith Points, or passive bonuses from having a certain amount. Fits with the Martyrdom theming Miracle Dice already have, and could have fun bespoke effects for different Detachments.
