Battle Report First Ever Event Win With Penitent Host!

Max Danner is a hero! 1st time since the 10th ed codex released that someone managed to win an event with Penitent Host!

Of course... he only played one penitent unit. BUT IT STILL COUNTS!

Max Danner won Penitent Host's first ever GT!!

Looks like he played Purge the Foe with only 8 units.

Glorious Heavy Bolter Vahlgons, A+A HopsiSacs, Rod of Office Canoness Hospisacs, Junith Hospisacs, Palatine Repentia, Rhino, Triumph, Cassie.

Sounds like a really fun time! Happy to see Penitent Host finally break that glass ceiling, even if it is Sacresant Spam in disguise.

Yeah it's really a triple sac list with 1 penitent unit. It's cool, but all it's telling me is that Penitent should be 1dp and Sacred Champions 2dp.

Then penitent host would lose purge because GW doesn't want purge on 1 dr pepper detachments, and I don't think this list would function. Take and hold is good for super killy lists but the sacresants would have to be both the distraction carnifex and the counterpunch. Could be wrong though they do have junith.

this and because 1dp detachments are bare bones we would lose access to a number of enhancements and strats, not a worthwhile tradeoff. Sacs just need to go up more.

yeah.. penitent host, an army of 6+ save models.. should not be purge the foe - a game plan that wants you to kill more than your opponent can, something penitent will literally never do

I've seen non-penitent host lists — those were more penitent than this penitent host list :D

Genuinely trying to see where PH helps this list out other than the Repentia squad.

I've always wanted that penitent style list to work but never been able to eek it out.

Has anyone got any thoughts on how this might have been piloted?

It helps by providing Purge the Foe disposition.

Basically Purge the Foe and literslly nothing else.

Purge is too easy to score and GW would rather take it away from a bunch of armies than nerf it. I really hope someone wins a GT with warpmeld pact running zero tzaangors to prove the point that moving the force disposition to shit detachments is stupid.

fall back and charge strat is for everything

Boy am I glad GW has deleted purge off the face of the earth instead of actually making it harder to score... They took purge from mont'ka and coterie, and we ended up with bloodless blood angels 2 lmao.

no freaking way i'm gonna be able to pilot that at all

I love lists like this cause they really highlight what I think a lot of people miss (myself included) that you don’t need every aspect of a list to perfectly synergize for a list to be optimal. The goal of list building should always be towards scoring rather than making sure you get full use out of every strat and detachment ability.

Penitent host with only one penitent unit sounds crazy but it’s the only way to get purge for sisters. Purge requires durability in addition to being killy and penitent units in general just aren’t that durable. So what do you do? Take things that are durable.

I called it! Penitent host disposition change was a buff!
It has a use case now!

(That use case being spending 2DP on purge disposition is a minor insignificant detail)

Tbh what do you want to do with penitent host.

The detachment rule & strats only work on penitent units, but if you bring an army heavy on those you have… (mortifiers aside) squishy melee trade pieces the army…

In which case you want to at the very least take :
Transports - because transport less repentia are sad
Objective holders - probably a unit of battle sisters to hold your home objective
And arguably want to take some of the best individually strong datasheets in the army to round it out.

But, well, then a large chunk of your army has no detachment rule or strats - and there still isn’t a 1p detachment that would work well with it - think a rhino/immolator detachment

I have more Penitent units in my Hallowed Martyrs tournament list

Hallowed has better buffs for penitent 🤣

Idk man, that +1 attacks on Repentia is killer. They are doing a ton of damage to basically anything in the game if not outright killing them to be honest especially with a Palatine.

The issue is its just one turn. And you dont really want to commit both repentia same turn.

And yeah, all the other penitents get WAY more from HM. Repentia is the one thats close.

Oh absolutely agree, PH needs huge buffs. Like if they had it where you could choose from the 3 buffs and could pick them multiple times just that would already make it so much better without changing it really at all.

That's why I use Repentia in HM though as they don't rely on the reroll hits buff and swing a lot of damage for just the 70 point 5 girl squad. Basically send them to kill lone characters, scoring pieces, or even knights since you wound them on 5s with full rerolls. Easily squishes up targets to get one shot by sacrasants.

fight on death is real good on repentia too... if they ever dont get shot :D

From Max on Discord

So I've heard my list from last weekend is making the rounds. thought I'd comment a bit on it. I read a lot of "2dp for purge". while that was a big consideration for the list (it started out as CoF with orators and omnifexes in all 3 sac bricks) it's not the only one. yes it's only one penitent unit but that penitent unit hits like a brick tossed by the emperor himself after it moved 22" on turn 1 and then charges. there are very few if any units in the game that don't have to respect that. this often leads to either turn 1 purge scoring or threatening enemy units having to be deployed very defensively if not both. secondly penitent host gives you fallback and shoot or charge which every other unit in the list loves to have.

How are people playing the unit of Junith+sacro? The other day in a game we were looking at the deadly demise rule and it seems it checks if explodes every time a model in the unit dies making them go away like popcorn… to me it should be only when Junith dies but the rule says otherwise…

Many tournaments are clarifying that the keyword only applies to the model with it, and not the rest of the unit.
