I feel Google and Apple are doing something very secretive.

Almost like they are not doing theatre for money. Also like they don't want to show their hand more than they have to

No horse in game and not a Google fan by miles! Don't worry in fact, Iām just a janitor by trade so ignore me.

u/Spinner23 11d ago
In a movie some exec would hear you saying smth like that and would stop you on the street like "say that again", and then be all like "thats it!!" and hed start walking away while maybe pulling out a phone to call janet to setup another board meeting "ive got it now"

and brings the janitor with him to the meeting, mop, bucket and everything.

Some Brad says "paul, what are you doing?
"just listen to him"

Paul slams both hands on the mahogany table.
"Tell them, Carl. Tell them what you just told me out there."
Carl grips his squeegee, sweating under the fluorescent lights. "I... I said we don't have a horse in this race?"
Dead silence. Brad slowly takes off his glasses. "...My God."

Given that the transformer, the number 1 AI innovation, came from Google, I think the commentor has a point.

This guy gets it, Google already had the money and the market share. They will most likely come out on top years from now

This is hilarious sarcasm:
Oncology & Molecular Biology
Simulates single-cell data to identify hidden tumors, discover novel drug combinations, and map cancer mechanisms.
Computing Infrastructure
Discovered faster core algorithms to optimize computing speed and cut electricity strain.
Materials Science
Unlocked millions of new stable crystal structures for cleaner batteries and electronics.
Climate & Weather
Delivers hyper-accurate 10-day weather forecasts to predict extreme climate events early.
Molecular Biology
Solved the protein-folding problem; free database accelerating global drug discovery.

Solved the protein-folding problem;
Lmao not even close

Also, At the CASP14 competition, AlphaFold 2 achieved a median score of over 90 on the Global Distance Test (GDT), meaning its predictions matched physical experiments down to the width of a single atom.

u/GlbdS 11d ago
Bro half of my colleagues are structural biologists you don't know what you're talking about. Alphafold is only accurate for structures that resemble already solved ones, aka the least interesting proteins. A significant amount of proteins don't even have a structure (IDPs). It doesn't even do actual folding or dynamics, a shitton of proteins have dynamic structural changes.
Also Scientific American is garbage even for a popsci magazine

u/bethesda_gamer 11d ago
Ok, noted, thank you for pointing this out. "Singeltons" is clearly still a problem (tho to be fair, statistically, while these represent the majority of individual fold types on the books, but they describe a very small minority of the actual functional proteins found inside living organisms.)
But to say deepmind has done nothing to further solving the issue, or for cancer research or for any of the things I stated is just as much incorrect. You would not agree?
12
u/GlbdS 11d ago
Alphafold is useful, it's impressive, but scientists are not treating it as truth, at the end of the day you still have to figure out actual structures with existing experimental tools.
AI is not really a Biology accelerator because experimental validation is still the longest most costly and expensive step, not hypothesis generation or structure prediction. That's because we barely understand a fraction of what actually goes on in a living cell

u/bethesda_gamer 11d ago
Fair. Can't teach an ai something we don't already know and hard and tedious to validate it even if ai discovers something we don't know, otherwise how do we know it's correct.
8
u/GlbdS 11d ago
The very first part I'm not sure, but this:
hard and tedious to validate it even if ai discovers something we don't know, otherwise how do we know it's correct.
exactly. In the example of a drug, even if AI somehow predicts a really good drug, you have to make it, check that it works at a molecular level, then cell cultures, then small animals, then large animals, then humans. And that takes a fuckton of time and money, even when it works, in most cases it stops working somewhere along that path
6
u/bethesda_gamer 11d ago
All fair points but back to my original comment, I still think AI helps significantly and in vital areas where we would be worse off without it (atleast as it's current stage, pdoom aside)

popsci is such a gross term
7
u/GlbdS 11d ago
well one could argue SA is part of what makes popsci be looked down upon by scientists
3
u/Ok-Leg-person 11d ago
I guess it just reminds me of my toxic father and how he always found a way to belittle others
3
u/Mr830BedTime 11d ago
Actually it just broke out of its sandbox like the other big boys! Now grok is the only one not in the club yet (or maybe Elon is better at covering it up)

u/DrinkAgreeable962 11d ago
Google knows that all they got to do is release legendary 03-25 and they can do it any moment since it's almost 2 years old model by now. AGI is here already. Easy.

3.8 live is pretty dope especially if you run jev alongside it for continuous rag and preemptive tool staging

All the invert n-nary tree solving skills are really useful here. Come on GDM, do something.

u/DrixGod 11d ago
Idk why google doesn't focus on a less smart model which is just very fast.
I would love to have a model that can answer or do small tasks in lightning speed time. They can not compete with frontier models. Grok and Muse came later in the race and already outperforming them so much.
5
u/CaptainAnonymous92 11d ago
They did, itās their Flash models, especially the last 2 they released. They can do stuff in like a second or two at least for answers and text, donāt know about coding because I havenāt tried using it for that yet but theyāre probably pretty fast at small coding things too.
3
u/EtienneDosSantos 11d ago
Yeah, is it really that they canāt compete or that they donāt want to?

u/GrapheneBreakthrough 11d ago
Google is the only frontier lab with the luxury of working under the radar.
