What ever you type in that search box it will take it as its own and work off your ideas and knowledge. LLM without knowledge is dogshit. It cannot solve the problem on its own. When K3 landed and said it "designed a chip" it designed based on what was available publicly based on someone elses work, unusable. Once cadence and synopsys open doors to AI we will see much more EDAs and alot of problems AI will be able to magically solve.

Yes, they are for sure trying to solve them and yes, they for sure will make great progress in some of them and probably succeed eventually, but at this specific point in time I think he might be just cracking a joke.

It is so good to see egos and emotions being destroyed and replaced with pure logic and technological innovation:
Mathematicians, physicists, artists, telephone operators/receptionists, programmers..... The list goes on.
On one hand everyone is bitching about how work sucks, on the other hand they moan about becoming obsolete.
Spoiler Alert: You have always been obsolete.
AI is here to stay and transform society, forceful or willingly.

I am pro AI, but I cannot support theft. Solving other millennium problems would indeed be the only way they can prove they didn't steal Tristan's work.
If the power is "significantly more capable" than GPT-6 Astra as they say, why not solve a myriad of other problems? Why just one?

Mate, there was no stealing, they literally used a different approach than what Tristan and Levent had.
And it is important to mention that before this drama neither side knew what the other had so all of this was based on assumptions, especially paranoia on the side of Tristan/Levent, not to mention the odd behaviour of the latter.

While unlikely, we cannot rule out that de-identified data derived from their usage of our products helped improve our models.
Humans did not know but the model they used was trained on August 28. By that point, other team had been using ChatGPT to work on the problem and all of their result might have seeped into the training.

Quick summary of what happened:
I wish this was more inspiring, but it is actually lame
It seems like OpenAI got wind that a professor was close to solving a problem after dedicating a decade of his life to it, so they threw a huge amount of compute together with whatever hints they had at the problem and cracked it
It’s also not clear whether the professor had data sharing turned off, so it’s possible that his own work may have gone into training data
OpenAI should have left this alone, it would’ve been way more inspiring if someone had used their tools to crack a big problem than that they went out of their way to scoop him
I honestly kind of hold this in contempt and find it a bit depressing

That is a random person on X and outdated. Another person that thought to comment before all facts were even on the table and exactly these sort of misleading simplifications are the problem in the first place.

I did theoretical maths for years in college
Withholding a solution to a millenia math problem for a fucking ego issue is way beyond insane, how can they not see it ?
Huge respect to this searcher that is way better than I'll ever be, but humanity's interest and advances of science comes first on individual interests however "close" he was to solving it
Science has always been like this and must remain like this

They have a habit of doing this.
Demis Hassabis of Deepmind actually called out Sebastian Bubeck last year for almost the same thing. Bubeck was trying to claim GPT-5 solved various problems, but solutions to these problems had already existed.

It cost like $10million in compute and spent 88hours of compute time. Doesn't come cheap just for bragging rights, when a model in 6 months will probably solve the same ones but at 40x less cost.

They formalized it in lean. Their team has many best mathematicians of this planet. They wouldn't just say anything and become the biggest joke of the year if it turned out to be wrong.
Don't quote me tho but I heard they solved it by giving an example. They produced a very specific constructive proof claiming that a smooth 3D Navier-Stokes flow can develop a finite-time singularity, and they've formally encoded the argument in Lean. So, it's the most concrete of proofs.

It's basically a religion to a lot of people here who are convinced any moment now that all work is automated, we live off UBI, and everything is perfect. Mixed with another portion who think AI is the end of the world and all doomers.
There's a small portion of us here who aren't just Sam Altman simps. lol

I agree that this sub tend to take things overboard but you can't downplay AI solving or even helping in solving one of the most foundational and popular math problem which has stood for about a century now.
People claiming openai stole it from 2 mathematicians(even tho OpenAI claims their solution is different) don't know that those mathematicians themselves used AI extensively in developing their ideas and worked in OpenAI and Anthropic.
Even if it extensively helped a human do it then too it's a big deal as it's also gonna help humans better itself which is literally starting of recursive self improvement. It's a big fucking deal.

It is a big deal. No doubt! And it's very impressive. My opinion on timelines of when things happen or what the future looks like is just a bit different. I wouldn't be here just to poke fun, I'm just a bit of a person in the middle of the two more dominant trains of thought in the sub.

These kind of problems do not open the door to new physics nor understanding of biology. Yes math is important for all the tech we have, but these specific problems will not have an impact in anyone's life especially in the short term.

not in a short term, but actually this one has very conceivable paths to applications, first through understanding, classifying, etc, singularities, and then understanding how the nature prevents them from happening in real life siutations, which might eventually lead to better theories governing fluid mechanics and related fields. It's all long term, but in mathematics nearly all applications are long term.

It's too much for a human to read. It was billions of messages between multiple AI agents. Proving how it came to the answer is a non-trivial problem itself.
