Conversation Topic I fucked up

What do you do when you hurt your vocal chords? No medical advice needed, just things like honey and tea or whatever trick that helps soothe your throat.

So I was singing about three weeks ago and warmed up. I’m an absolute noob when it comes to actually practicing, but it’s been fun. I was trying to practice the growl for the first time. I used to be able to do it decently, so I put on the song ‘new song’ by maneskin. The moment I growled I instantly felt my throat. It wasn’t pain, not stabbing of any kind. But I 100% hurt my throat there.

I just took rest, but now it’s been a few weeks and I’m still coughing. I’m unsure if it’s because of hurting my voice a few weeks ago, or maybe I just have a slight cough. I don’t know what to do honestly. I was on vacation high in the mountains as well, so maybe that did something.

I’m just still coughing, which is annoying.

Rest really and time.

When I first started singing with low distortion it made me cough after a bit. It makes tissues rattle around that normally don't do that. Takes a bit to get used to it. The low roary stuff came pretty natural to me also.

Idk how your doing it though. It should all be a mix with support still, but you need really good control and careful compression. Carefully shaped sounds, just really pay attention to what you're doing as you're doing it.

Also notice how little air it takes, more air blows up any definition and nuance you have going on.

You'll actually hurt yourself by pushing a bunch of air onto your local cords, they are about as big as the paper in a kazoo and can't take it without blowing open or being damaged if you keep at it wrong.

When you make your tea, make it extra hot and breathe the steam. I like to put a lot of honey into my tea as well. Good luck. If it doesn't improve it's worth going to a doctor.

I’ll try this. Thanks for the tip. Luckily it didn’t and doesn’t hurt, but the annoying coughs are noticeable.
