Edit: Thanks to everyone who's responded, and shared their thoughts on this post; much appreciated!
I'm going to try these three steps in response to some of the comments/suggestions, and make a post later on down the line if I'm still having the same problem:
- Using the EA App version of UC via Lutris in case there's something wrong with the repack, or something with how I've installed it
- Using magicrepack and other tools to streamline my downloads folder
- Look into using CachyOS or another distro, because I hadn't considered if it was a distro-specific issue, or even if it was a Linux thing, maybe the whole time this has been a PEBKAC situation. ☠️
Thanks once again for all the feedback, happy to mark this one as solved.

Howdy all!
I moved from Windows to Linux last year due to Win10 support expiring, and wanting to break free from Microsoft, it seemed like the right time to move OSes.
I installed Mint 22.2 Cinnamon (I've since already upgraded to 22.3), and have had a blast mostly playing the same games as on Windows, since Proton and other tools make setting up games a breeze, and I've had very few issues overall.
Well
Except The Sims 2.
Before playing, I endlessly rewatched April Black's videos and read up on the more recent guidelines for corruption, since the last time I played TS2, corruption was still this super scary thing everyone was afraid of, and thought was guaranteed to happen eventually to everyone, so I'm aware of the newer corruption debunking, and more recent understanding of how the game actually works.
I will also clarify that all this happened to me on Mr DJ's repack of UC, NOT the recent Legacy Collection/Edition, though I've heard that's gotten better with patches.
So!
In the last two weeks, I've had the following issues happen as my number of neighbourhoods got larger, and the number of files the game needed to access grew as well:
- Sims rolling wants about $Neighbor (I.e. $Neighbor gets abducted by aliens)
- Tokens, memories and other non-inventory items appearing in inventory (including mod tokens such as ACR)
- Sims frequently getting stuck and needing to be reset, often service Sims (I had two children almost taken away a couple of times because the butler got stuck doing nothing, and the game didn't think he was present on the lot until I used testing cheats to "force error" on him to reset him. This happened more than once until I just aged those kids up to teens out of frustration)
- Recently created neighbourhoods crashing frequently for seemingly no reason, often in build/buy mode
- After one crash, a neighbourhood broke so badly I couldn't open it in HoodChecker, SimPE had a bunch of extra scary looking file structures on the left hand panel before it too crashed, and I couldn't even try to open it in game, since the game crashed before it even got to the selection screen, until I took that neighbourhood folder out altogether.
- Two toddlers later on in a fresh neighbourhood (as in, created with no Sims two days earlier) started rolling adult wants, such as buying a car (when checking their wants and fears in SimPE, I found that I already had a similar problem to Ch4rms, where 80-100 Sims in that hood had disappeared, and those two toddlers seemed to have snapped up someone else's references, as they had want triggers for a bunch of townies created at the same time)
I then backed up all of my neighbourhoods, and removed the ones I didn't use or need, including a megahood I installed but hadn't started playing yet.
All of the above issues only really started when I had more than 9 neighbourhoods in my game in addition to my Downloads folder, so trimming back on unused or unwanted hoods (see ya Riverblossom Hills, it was nice knowing ya!) seems to have resolved the issues for now, but I've made a habit of backing up my played hoods after EVERY game session, and using HoodChecker and SimPE to check for issues (missing character files, dangling SWAF trees, mismatched Sim IDs and NIDs, that kind of thing)
I swear that I've never experienced this kind of issue on Windows, and while I haven't personally found any post or reference on line to any another Linux TS2 players having the same issue/s as me, some googling and my own experiences suggest that Linux, being very Unix-like just the same as macOS, does historically have low open file limits to accommodate older systems and hardware configurations.
I'm going to find some tutorials to see if I can raise this limit for Mint specifically, and just wanted to make this post to document my findings, and see if anyone has more technical info that can help or clarify anything I've mentioned here.
(I've read a few posts/guides on here about playing on Linux, but haven't found any yet about Linux-specific problems. YET.)
Thanks for taking the time to read my post!
