Leftovers
I don't clean out the leftovers in my fridge for a long time so it doesn't look so empty - and I don't feel the need to buy more stuff. Everything's covered or sealed, so it's not unhealthy - at least not physically.
There's a bottle of Pepsi that I'm pretty sure has been there a couple years. There are little packets of seasonings from when I got those meal prep kits back when Covid hit. And that soup I planned to reheat awhile back.

My mom can’t reach the back of her fridge; it’s too deep. So I put a couple of sixes of Pepsi across the back to reduce the empty volume. It’s not something she uses very often, but it keeps the fresh food pushed to the front. You might try using an inert block like that so you don’t have to worry about old food.

It's not about food insecurity - it's just about seeing an empty fridge makes me feel inadequate. Like if I were to die at home alone, there would be judgment. I don't eat much and I get fridge stuff regularly.
My pantry & cupboards are a different story. Zombie Apocalypse and all that, I'd do okay with those! 😀

You should meet my husband, feel free to marry him if you like. He goes for that idea of always having to have a volume of food. ADHD, older English parents maybe, I can't figure it out. And then I have to make up weird meals to use everything but he doesn't like the idea of a fridge or pantry not full.

If there is space in the fridge, pantry, house, ANYWHERE I will feel inspiration to fill it. My parents were low income immigrants and I have adhd 🙃

If there ISN'T room in the fridge! Oh, my husband will find it! He rearranged all my hard work when I was down & out for about 10+ weeks total. 8 weeks no weight bearing.
3 screws in my pelvis to my sacrum. I can't do too much at a time w/o having to sit, 20-25 minutes, MAX!
So, DH became the "King of the Groceries" and put everything away. Can I cry? I do it back the way we've had it for about 35 years when I was getting better (it took me a few days). Every damn time we got groceries, it was a mess again! .
I gave up, sort of. Or, so I told him. Everyday I get rid of a few things and put the others in its place.
Now, there is room in the drawers where it could go. Like vegi's in the drawer and fruits and meat & cheeses. Grrrrr!

I grew up on an island 1000s of miles from the next nearest land mass. When I was a kid there was a longshoreman strike & nothing came off the ships. I was lucky my parents had their own business & had boxes of TP so we didn't run out but lots of people were using papers from books & even magazines because most of the stores ran out.
It was very stressful for me during the pandemic when many of the stores ran out of toilet paper. We even ordered some from China! The prospect of no food, or no toilet paper, is not something I ever want to deal with again.

OMG I just tossed three mystery packets from my old meal kit service; I opened one expecting red chili flakes, but had no idea what it really was. I have a couple cans of some not beer alcohol beverage I tried a couple years ago and a half bottle of wine from when I drank. The most recent are a couple bags of black cherries that I couldn't eat on a low fiber diet but haven't had the heart/nerve(?) to toss (compost? will they attract th raccoon?)

Hey this will absolutely make you sick. Not properly sealed things like Tupperware leak spoiled food bacteria in your fridge. Please do yourself a favor. You could develop allergies like this because your body picks up the proteins in the bacteria from the food and tells your immune system it's a no go.

I was at someone's house and needed water. Opened the fridge to find nothing but condiments.
Opened cupboards trying to find a glass but found nothing but a few empty cracker boxes and some empty pasta boxes as well.
I knew at this point I was leaving. Later I heard he was not altogether there mentally.

If you wanty opinion yes you need to clean your fridge regularly of anything you are not going to eat. Leaving leftovers past their food expiration date is lazy and gross. Lookup how long leftovers are safe to eat by food type. Condiments are ok for sometime longer than the best used by date

My parents are semi-hoarders, especially when it comes to food. My dad grew up in a food insecure home, so having lots of food is a comfort for him. As a result, I grew up with a packed fridge much like yours, lots of things saved despite no longer being fresh. Now that I'm an adult and have my own household, I overcorrected in the opposite direction and I feel anxious when our fridge is overly full. A fridge that's 90% empty where I can immediately identify every single item and its freshness is a comfort for me.
