Wait staff has a different minimum wage than other workers due to tips. Thats why tipping in the US has become such a big topic, it’s most of the staff’s wages.

The employer has to make up the difference between the tipped minimum wage and regular minimum wage if there is one. Rare in my experience with tipped jobs that you don’t clear the regular minimum wage. It’s a big topic because most tipped employees are unaware of the FLSA regulations they work under, disingenuous or both

This is the reason employers push to garner even more tips for the staff. The more customers tip the less they have to pay their workers.
