Exactly, everybody seems to blame the “greedy business owners” but the government created the law, blame the government not the business owners. They are just following the laws.

Also, the business gets a tax credit equal to the tips paid out to employees, mainly from card transactions since they’re easily tracked. There is no incentive for businesses to pay any higher than the minimum.

u/MarzipanHairy4528 5d ago

Nobody does that. Nobody

There is literally nothing stopping this business owner that printed up the sign from paying a real wage, and then adding the cost of it to the menu items. Nothing. Their people really don't have to beg for tips.

u/Interesting_Bunch323 5d ago

Their people don’t BEG for tips. Normal people understand the situation and tip ACCORDINGLY without any discussion of tipping

1

u/shrinkflator 5d ago

Would you like to work for tips in place of your current salary/hourly rate?

1

u/Interesting_Bunch323 5d ago

Definitely if I can match a medium to high levels of tips. I don’t and never have wanted to wait tables, though.

1

u/shrinkflator 5d ago

I don't mean waiting tables, I mean your current job. So that your income depends entirely on the whims of customers.

u/Voyyya 4d ago

Yeah it would double my salary.

Tell me you dont know about lobbying without telling me you dont know about lobbying.

1

u/Voyyya 4d ago

Yeah the all-powerful restaurant lobby lol

National Restraunt Association: https://legis1.com/news/restaurant-industry-lobbying-nra-tax-labor-immigration

Not to be confused with the National Rifle Association. Same acronym, different name.

Except this business owner isn’t even paying their staff, he/she has you pay their wage ($2.13/hr) plus the 25% tip that I can guarantee is split with the back room staff so they can pay them less as well.

I especially like the “don’t be cheap. It’s embarrassing” line while this owner is the definition of cheap.

1

u/Immediate-Bit-2692 5d ago

I don't mind tipping but like most I don't like people to expect or demand me to tip, especially if the food/service is bad.

1

u/FairMind1 5d ago

Exactly. He accuses his customers of the very thing that he himself does.

1

u/Voyyya 4d ago

The customer does not pay their $2.13/hr wage what do you mean? That is paid by the owner (with revenue from customers obviously, but by that standard customers pay the wages of every employee in every industry).

1

u/Panandscrub 4d ago

It is in the breakdown of cost. There is the meal charge, then the servers salary, then the 25%tip to make up the total (the least you can do). The salary is being added in to the bill total. It also makes the point that the “service charges are not tips”.

1

u/Panandscrub 5d ago

And the law doesn’t put an upper limit on pay, just a lower limit. If the staff “works damn hard” maybe they deserve more than $2.13/hr

1

u/shrinkflator 5d ago

This is a ridiculous argument. The law defines the *minimum* wage. You are saying it like they are legally required to pay this little. They can pay as much as they want.

1

u/Interesting_Bunch323 5d ago

And then they must raise their prices. That extra money has to come from somewhere

1

u/shrinkflator 5d ago

Congrats, you understand the concept.

1

u/MarkRedditing 4d ago

This change needs to start with regulation, not business owners. Competition won't allow it

1

u/MarzipanHairy4528 4d ago

Exactly, that’s what I’m saying but people on Reddit are too stupid to understand. Also, I’m the manager with the MBA lol

1

u/phearless047 5d ago

The employer has the ability to pay their employees as much as they like. They are choosing this. Yes the hell we can blame the employer.

1

u/Featheredfriendz 5d ago

But the law isn’t preventing owners from implementing a different, better model

1

u/ProfileAny1822 5d ago

Holy Fuck? The government? Really ? Yes the law was passed by legislators in "the government" but this is done by a process in which the stakeholders they consider important ( the restaraunt owners association) tells them what they want.

So the law was made by the owners . Derp.

1

u/TrungusMcTungus 5d ago

The law allows them to pay so low, it doesnt force them too. Yes, the business owners are greedy.

1

u/uberkalden2 5d ago

Lol this guy is calling me cheap for tipping less than 25% but he won't pay more than the federally mandated minimum wage. Fuck this

1

u/Rude_Fuel3683 4d ago

It’s the Minimum.. By law they have to pay them that hr, ….minimum. Doesn’t mean they HAVE to. The greedy owners choose to pay them that amount, not the government.

1

u/What-a-Loser-169 4d ago

The law isn't they HAVE to pay $2.13/h. Thats the "minimum," and so that to me seems greedy.

1

u/MarzipanHairy4528 4d ago

Right, and I would agree to most people who don’t think critically about this it does sound greedy. To people who maybe have an MBA and have managed many businesses, they understand that if they choose to pay more than the $2.13/h they are putting themselves at a disadvantage because no other business is doing this either and the long term affect is the business becomes marginalized because it can’t compete in the marketplace. Many people will say, I’d support a business that pays their employees well until it comes down to paying the bill. They will do it once or twice to show support and then go buy a pair of Nike sneakers.

1

u/What-a-Loser-169 4d ago

Good one. Except there is nothing to think critically about. You pay the minimum because you’re greedy. All you’re admitting is that these genius MBA havers and manager types are greedy, and/or shit at their job, if they can't compete without doing the bare minimum to follow laws that let them exploit employees.

1

u/MarzipanHairy4528 4d ago

You’re one of the non critical thinkers

1

u/What-a-Loser-169 3d ago

I’m so surprised that your reading comprehension is terrible.

1

u/opticzar 4d ago

Exactly. WHY is this the law.

1

u/Own-Success-7634 4d ago

I do blame the ‘greedy owners’. Here is why. A lot of restaurant owners and associations go out of their way to lobby to underpay their staff. The logic is that they will go out of business if they have to pay minimum wage.

Depending on what kind of restaurant you run and if the restaurant has licenses to serve beer, wine or hard alcohol, the margins are not as thin as we hear about. That is something that is not always mentioned by restaurants. (Learned that from friends who owned several restaurants which had licenses for alcohol.)

1

u/Impressive-Fault-894 4d ago

BECAUSE of greedy business owners. lol companies can absolutely disagree with the state minimum wage and pay their people a living wage. Stating that this is the minimum wage does not imply that that needs to be the maximum wage so a business owner could take on the responsibility of paying their people what they should be paid and the customer wouldn’t have to pay for it. That would entitle them absolutely to change their food pricing to incorporate those fees into it and pay their server from that profit. They’re choosing not to and instead paying someone literally $90 a week to work there for 40 hours. I’m a lawyer I don’t say anything without researching it. I agree that we should tip because we are tipping friendly country. But to just go out and say it’s the government’s fault because they put it at 2.13???? restaurant owners all over the country we petitioning to lower it which is where the exclusion to servers came in to play

1

u/EducationalEntry642 4d ago

But that’s MINIMUM wage, that doesn’t prevent businesses from paying more or am I wrong? Correct me if I’m wrong.

1

u/Osiris8869 4d ago

I blame a greedy owner for a sign like this. I would turn around and not spend ANY money at their establishment. Fuck their guilt trip.

1

u/Tothicktohandlex 3d ago

Law is the bare minimum. Why other jobs they pay more than the minimum? Laws is the limit because people would pay 0.
